Unrein Signs Tender

April 11th, 2013 - 12:08pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

This week, running back Lance Ball and tackle Chris Clark have already signed their contract tenders. On Thursday, defensive tackle Mitch Unrein joined that list, singing his exclusive-rights tender.

Unrein has played 30 games, starting two, in his two seasons with the Broncos. He has notched 27 tackles, one fumble recovery and even one touchdown catch in his career.

That touchdown came on a pass from quarterback Peyton Manning, making Unrein the first defensive lineman in Broncos history to catch a touchdown pass.

He originally entered the NFL in 2010 with Houston as a college free agent, but finished that season on Denver’s practice squad, going on to play 14 regular-season games in 2011 and all 16 in 2012.

Cornerback Tony Carter and punter Britton Colquitt were also issued contract tenders in March, but have not signed yet.

Weight Gain

Broncos defensive tackle Mitch Unrein walked into the club’s weight room for an offseason workout with new Strength and Conditioning Coach Luke Richesson when he discovered that his routine was going to change.

Unbeknownst to Unrein, Richesson was in the process of completely overhauling the team’s weight room, replacing nearly all of the old equipment with brand new machines.

That reminded the second-year player of another weight room that needed to be revamped.

Unrein had been planning a fundraiser to help improve the weight room at Eaton High School — his alma mater. He originally hoped to replace one piece of equipment each year, but with the timing of the Broncos’ redesign, a bigger opportunity presented itself.

“I was like, ‘I wonder what they’re doing with that stuff, I wonder if I could buy it second-hand from them or something,’ Unrein said. “So, I went up and talked to (Broncos Vice President of Operations) Chip (Conway) and Chip said, ‘No, we’re actually donating that stuff.’ I said, ‘Oh, really?’ I told him my situation with my high school and everything and he said that they’d be willing to donate some stuff to my high school.”

And just like that, Eaton High School received entirely new equipment for its weight room, which it desperately needed.

Pair Added to Practice Squad

October 20th, 2010 - 9:50am by Eric DetweilerOther posts by

The Broncos brought their roster back to capacity on Wednesday morning, adding tight end John Nalbone and defensive lineman Mitch Unrein to their practice squad.

Nalbone, a fifth-round pick of Miami in 2009, played in a pair of games this season for the Dolphins and also spent time on Minnesota’s practice squad. The 6-foot-4, 255-pound tight end did not record any regular season catches. As a rookie last season, the Monmouth University grad was inactive for the Dolphins’ first six games before spending the rest of the season on the team’s practice squad.

Unrein, a rookie defensive lineman, spent the 2010 preseason with Houston after signing as a college free agent out of Wyoming. Unrein recorded one tackle in two preseason contests before being waived on Sept. 3. The Colorado native was a three-time All-Mountain West selection at Wyoming.
