Look Added to Defensive Arsenal, Starting Strong

September 22nd, 2008 - 4:19pm by Jake GrilleyOther posts by

The Broncos showed their defensive flexibility during Sunday’s win against New Orleans. At times Denver mixed things up by implementing a 3-4 defensive scheme instead of the team’s traditional 4-3 formation.

The team’s four linebacker alignment allowed them to utilize different defensive groupings allowing Jamie Winborn to join Boss Bailey, D.J. Williams and Nate Webster as a member of the linebacking corps. With so much talent on the defense, Williams said switching between schemes lets more of that talent see action.

Familiar Face, Unfamilar Team

The Broncos will play the Saints on Sunday for the first time in four seasons, and although the team that steps on the field at INVESCO Field at Mile High on Sunday is an unfamiliar opponent, the man under center is not.

Current Saints quarterback Drew Brees was the signal caller for the rival San Diego Chargers for five seasons from 2001-2005.

Shanahan Voted Coach of the Week

September 19th, 2008 - 12:14pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

On Friday, the NFL announced that Head Coach Mike Shanahan was voted the Motorola NFL Coach of the Week for Week 2.

Shanahan led the Broncos to a last-minute, 39-38 victory against the AFC West rival San Diego Chargers.

The Broncos offense gained a total of 486 yards, led by Jay Cutler, who passed for a career-best 350 yards and four touchdowns. Brandon Marshall was Cutler’s favorite target, hauling in a franchise-record 18 receptions for 166 yards and one touchdown. With the Broncos down by one following Cutler’s final touchdown completion to rookie Eddie Royal, Shanahan made the decision to go for the two-point conversion. On the ensuing play, Cutler hit Royal over the middle to seal the victory.

The Broncos defense forced one turnover and limited the Chargers to just 80 rushing yards.

Shanahan beat out Buffalo’s Dick Jauron and Washington’s Jim Zorn for the award.

An Instant Classic at Invesco Field

September 15th, 2008 - 2:47pm by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

Anybody who was in attendance or watched the Broncos’ 39-38 win over San Diego is not likely to ever forget this one for quite some time.

This was an instant classic, without question one of the greatest and most entertaining home games ever played in the 49 years of Denver Broncos history.

Much has been made of the incomplete pass call by referee Ed Hochuli which led to a subsequent review and ultimately gave the Broncos the ball at the San Diego 10 on that final Denver drive.

But the Broncos still had no better than a third and 10, and Denver btoh scored and then added the two-point conversion in a dramatic decision by Head Coach Mike Shanahan.

But regardless, the call was really just one element of a thoroughly spectacular game that was a coming out party for the Broncos’ young offensive unit.

Charged Up

September 10th, 2008 - 6:21pm by Jake GrilleyOther posts by

The Broncos showed that they are capable of putting up points and coming away with a win during Monday night’s trouncing of the Oakland Raiders.

“It sure was a good way to start,” Head Coach Mike Shanahan said about the team winning its first game. “Any time you start on Monday night in the AFC West against the Raiders and you get a big win… But it’s short lived because we have to get ready for San Diego.”

Denver will get to see if they can continue its early season success as the rival San Diego Chargers, AFC West champs the past two years, come to INVESCO Field at Mile High. Sunday is a statement game for the Broncos who have lost their previous four regular season games to the Chargers.

Jacobs Released; Powell to Reserve/PUP

August 26th, 2008 - 1:26pm by Adam ZinserOther posts by

The Broncos had to trim their roster to 75 players today, and after releasing/waiving three yesterday, the team got to the league mandated number with two more transactions today.

The Broncos released wide receiver Taylor Jacobs and placed Carlton Powell on the reserve/physically unable to perform list, Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced.

Jacobs joined the Broncos on November 6 of last year and played in six games. He was waived earlier this offseason and then rejoined the team for training camp.

The Broncos selected Powell in the fifth round of the 2008 NFL Draft, but he injured his right Achilles tendon during the team’s offseason conditioning program in July.

Nalen To Have Knee Scoped Again

August 20th, 2008 - 1:29pm by Jake GrilleyOther posts by

Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced after Wednesday’s practice that veteran center Tom Nalen will have his knee scoped on Thursday. Nalen underwent a similar procedure in the offseason.

“What we are going to do is have Tom get his knee cleaned up a little bit — more preventative than anything else,” Shanahan said. “It hasn’t healed the way we would have liked.”

Nalen was held out of much of training camp due to soreness in his left knee. Shanahan said he hopes after having this procedure that Nalen will be ready in time for the regular season.

“Hopefully it’s nothing serious and can alleviate some of the swelling and the pain and hopefully he is ready to go by the first game.”
