Wrapping Up The Preseason

August 28th, 2012 - 8:17am by mike_riceOther posts by

My preseason patience lasted three games. If it were up to me, I’d say let’s get right to the Steelers and the opening act of the 2012 season.

While there is the final preseason game for the Broncos to work through, I have seen enough to know that I think they’ll at least be pretty good this year.

Of course, injuries, the unknown and the unexpected all usually come into play at some point or another but overall, I really like where the Broncos stand as the regular season is about to get started.

1 – PEYTON MANNING IS READY. It is so completely obvious that he can still play at a really high level and his performance against the 49ers again showed what I already believed. Some of his passes were simply crazy good. None was better than the 38-yard completion to Lance Ball, a pass he delivered with pinpoint accuracy while taking a faceful of defensive lineman.

The Right Approach

August 24th, 2012 - 7:58am by mike_riceOther posts by

Even though it is just preseason and the games do not count in the standings, there is something to be said for doing things the right way. The Broncos are doing things the right way.

Competitors want to win. While the 30-10 loss to Seattle will quickly fade from most of our memories, the Broncos did not like that losing feeling whatsoever.

“It’s always disappointing, whether it’s preseason or regular season, to lose a game,” Broncos Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway told 850 KOA on Thursday.

Head coach John Fox told us the same thing earlier in the week.

“Every time you throw it out there, you want to win. Obviously you feel better when you win,” Fox said.

Rice Takes: Off To A Good Start

Let me begin with a well-worn but appropriate qualifier. All together now…“It’s only one preseason game….”

Now that the formality is out of the way, the Broncos have to be thrilled with how the preseason started in Thursday’s 31-3 win over the Bears. I know, it means nothing in the standings. See the qualifier above.

But the game does mean something when it comes to getting an idea of where the Broncos stand. It means something when it comes to getting a glimpse of their overall talent. It means something when it comes to continuing to claw their back towards the top of the NFL.

Eddie Mac is Back

July 31st, 2012 - 9:42am by mike_riceOther posts by

Editor’s note: Denver’s preseason games at Chicago (8/9), vs. Seattle (8/18) and at Arizona (8/30) will be simulcast with Dave Logan (play-by-play) and Ed McCaffrey (color analyst) providing coverage for both television and radio broadcasts.

This season, Broncos’ fans will be able to tune in to one of their favorites. Former Broncos’ wide receiver Ed McCaffrey (EM) will be in the booth as the new color analyst with Dave Logan on all Broncos broadcasts on 850 KOA.

McCaffrey spent nine seasons with the Broncos (1995-2003) and now steps into a new role, replacing Brian Griese, who will have an increased workload at ESPN this football season.

850 KOA’s Dave Logan (DL), the Voice of the Broncos, and Dave Krieger (DK) spoke with Ed about his new position.

Rice Takes: Getting Started

Thankfully, the waiting is over.

Broncos training camp is here and I am excited as I have been going into camp as I have been in a long, long time.

There are several reasons.

1) THE BRONCOS HAVE SOLID LEADERSHIP. I think of the changes John Elway has made in his first year-plus on the job and I am astounded at how far the Broncos have come in such a short time. Starting with Elway’s hiring John Fox as the head coach right through his ability to land Peyton Manning, Elway has shown himself to be, at the very least, a more than capable executive. And I still think there are better things to come.

That doesn’t always happen when a Hall of Fame player makes the transition to the front office. Elway said he wanted to run the Broncos and put in the necessary work to do that in a way that would get them back to the top of the NFL. He is off to a great start. If anyone thought that Elway wouldn’t be willing to put in the time and effort his job demands, he has shown those concerns to be completely unfounded.

KOA Q&A with Brandon Stokley

July 20th, 2012 - 9:18am by mike_riceOther posts by

Our interview series continues as we lead up to training camp. During the recently-completed OTAs (organized team activities)and mini-camp, 850 KOA spoke with Broncos wide receiver Brandon Stokley (BS), who is back with the team this year.

850 KOA: You’re going to get this question about 500 times in training camp but after OTAs, how do you feel?

BS: I feel great. I feel as good as I’ve felt in five or six years. Everything is feeling good. That could change but right now I feel really good.

850 KOA: You suffered a pretty serious quad injury with the Giants last year and took the season off to rehab it. That seems to have been a good decision for you.

BS: Yeah. It wasn’t like I had any offers to go play anywhere any way. (Chuckling) I wasn’t in any rush. It feels great right now. I took the time off and it healed up fine and has given me no problems.
850 KOA: You are familiar with Peyton Manning from your time playing with him in Indianapolis. Does that familiarity help you at all?

OTA Q&A – Elway, Part One

June 12th, 2012 - 9:25am by mike_riceOther posts by

The Broncos are currently in the midst of their OTAs (organized team activities) in preparation for the 2012 season. The Broncos’ mini-camp this week caps the OTAs and will be the team’s final workouts before training camp begins in July.

Leading up to training camp, we’ll bring you some conversations that 850 KOA had with various members of the Broncos. Recently, 850 KOA had the chance to talk with Broncos’ Executive Vice President of Football Operations, John Elway (JE).

850 KOA: Are things quieting down a little before training camp starts?

JE: They are. Now that we’ve got Ty Warren re-done, which we’re excited about, we’re winding down. Mini-camp is (coming up). We had a good 10 OTAs (to) get everybody together, get everybody knowing each other and then finish with the mini-camp. From that point on, the players are done. The coaches and everybody will take some time off and get ready for camp.

Rice Takes: Taking Stock

May 22nd, 2012 - 1:17pm by mike_riceOther posts by

With free agency and the draft now over, we get to sort through the pots and pans of the offseason. Let the organized team activities (OTAs) begin.

OTAs typically lack excitement and it is hard to take anything of substance from them. But they are an important part of the preparation process for the season. For a Broncos team that has a number of new faces, it is a key time.

So where do the Broncos stand? I think they stand in a pretty good place. Why? Several reasons.

A Crop Of New Players

May 1st, 2012 - 9:42am by mike_riceOther posts by

What a weekend. The draft is now history. Some thoughts on the big weekend.

1) LET’S ALL BE HONEST ENOUGH TO SAY WE REALLY DON’T KNOW HOW WELL THE BRONCOS DRAFTED. With the plethora of opinions and evaluations, we like to think we know how well they did. The fact is, however, we don’t know how good it is. We don’t know how any team did.

I know that sounds like any easy out but for me, it is the absolute truth. It simply takes time to find out how well a team drafted.

In the lead-up to the draft, we hear and read analysts talk and write about certain players. Thus, we tend to think those are the best players. Then, we hope that the team we root for drafts some of those players. The fact is, there are a lot of really good players available. Many of them we haven’t heard of or seen play. And virtually none of us have ever broken down film on them.
