Super Bowl XLVII Preview

February 2nd, 2013 - 2:42pm by mike_riceOther posts by

Super Bowl XLVII
Baltimore Ravens vs. San Francisco 49ers

It has come down to this.

Two teams. One trophy.

Time to settle it.

Thankfully the Ravens and 49ers will do just that on Sunday and bring down the curtain on the NFL season.

While the Super Bowl often disintegrates into a rout, I’m not sure that will happen this year, mainly because the two teams are so similar.

Consider the statistics.

Championship Sunday

January 20th, 2013 - 9:00am by mike_riceOther posts by

SAN FRANCISO 49ERS @ ATLANTA FALCONS
This has all the makings of a terrific game. The top-seeded Falcons are looking to get to the Super Bowl for the first time since they lost to the Broncos in Super Bowl XXIII.

The 48ers are looking to complete its climb back to the top of the NFL under the guidance of young quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

The 49ers are rolling the dice that the moment will not be too big for their second-year signal caller.

It won’t be. Not by a long shot.

Kaepernick is big, he’s fast and he’s a big play waiting to happen. Plus, he also brings the element of rushing the ball. He piled up 181 yards on the ground in the NFL Divisional playoff win over the Packers. And all too frequently, he was outrunning Packers defenders for big gains.

A Welcome Break

January 7th, 2013 - 8:49am by mike_riceOther posts by

The Broncos now know they will host the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Divisional Playoffs this Saturday.

It was a welcome change to be able to find that out while watching games this weekend.

Granted, it was somewhat strange not to see the Broncos play. After all, they have won 11 straight games and have been playing as consistently well as any team in the NFL.

Then, perhaps somewhat surprisingly, they jumped into the top seed in the AFC and locked up a bye in the first round of the playoffs.

The team, and its fans, didn’t have to worry about much of anything this weekend. It was simply wait and see which team would be coming to Sports Authority Field at Mile High on Saturday, January 12.

The Team To Beat

December 28th, 2012 - 7:35am by mike_riceOther posts by

The Broncos refuse to look ahead.

Head coach John Fox said this week he has not studied the playoff field.

“Nope, because then I wouldn’t be keeping my focus. I think what’s really important is that win this week against Kansas City. All our focus will be on that. Whatever that brings, we’ll react to. Right now, that’s where all the focus is.”

But Fox did tell 850 KOA that he has thought about how he might handle things should the Broncos secure a bye in the first round of the playoffs.

“Oh yeah. I’ve been doing this a while so we pretty much have a schedule for everything,” Fox said. “We’ll know how to adapt and prepare if that’s the scenario. But we have to take care of business Sunday first.”

I know anything can happen on any given Sunday, but I have little doubt the Broncos will beat the Chiefs and at lock down at least the second seed in the AFC playoffs and a week off in the first round of the postseason.

Coaches and players cannot say that, even if they believe it.

Not only do I believe the Broncos will accomplish those things but I also believe with one week left in the regular season, they are the team to beat in the postseason.

I have no idea if they will advance to the Super Bowl and win it. But if I were a betting man, that’s the way I would go for several reasons.

1) OVER THE LAST TWO TO THREE MONTHS, THE BRONCOS HAVE BEEN MORE CONSISTENT THAN ANY TEAM IN THE NFL.

Not only have they won 10 straight games, but the Broncos are averaging 30.8 points per game during the streak. Only the Chiefs have held them under 20 points all season and that was in the Broncos’ 17-9 win at Arrowhead Stadium on November 25.

At the same time, the Broncos’ defense has given up an average of only 17.2 points per game during the 10-game winning streak.

In addition, as my 850 KOA colleague David Treadwell points out, the Broncos lead the NFL with 48 sacks and they are third in rushing defense, allowing only 91 yards rushing per game. They can bottle up the run and get to the quarterback.

2) THE BRONCOS HAVE AN ELITE QUARTERBACK. Peyton Manning gives them a chance to win regardless of how a game unfolds. He can help them get out to a big lead. He can rally the troops if the Broncos fall behind. He won’t let his team go into a game unprepared. He won’t let his team go into a game unfocused on the task at hand.

Manning isn’t the only reason the Broncos are 12-3. But he is most definitely one of the main reasons they have had this kind of year.

I know several other teams also have elite quarterbacks. Which one, however, is playing better than Peyton Manning right now? I’m not sure one is.

3) THE BRONCOS HAVE PLAYMAKERS ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BALL. Imagine being an opposing defensive coordinator. Remembering that Manning has faced just about every kind of defense possible, the opponent’s defensive coordinator will still have to decide on what he believes the best approach is to try to slow Manning down. Easier said than done.

Then, that coordinator has to decide which receiver will garner the most attention. Demaryius Thomas? Fine, the Broncos still have Eric Decker, Jacob Tamme, Brandon Stokley, Joel Dreessen and others. Seven different players have at least 20 receptions (one of them, Willis McGahee is currently injured) and five players have 39 or more catches this season.

Furthermore, the Broncos are running the ball pretty well. In five starts since Willis McGahee injured his knee, Knowshon Moreno has piled up 469 rushing yards and two touchdowns. That’s a more-than-respectable 93.8 yards per game and 4.0 yards per carry.

Now, think about being the opposing offensive coordinator when your team is facing the Broncos’ defense. Denver stuffs the run and gets to the quarterback. Who is your first priority, Von Miller or Elvis Dumervil? You also know that Champ Bailey will likely match up against your best wide receiver. Think you can pick on Chris Harris or Tony Carter? No worries, each of those guys has scored two touchdowns.

The bottom line is that in addition to a variety of star players who are playmakers, the Broncos have plenty of others who have taken turns making big plays in big situations. There is no reason that cannot continue.

4) THE BRONCOS HAVE SOME COMPELLING INTANGIBLES. Call me a homer if you want but I believe this to be true. More than anything, the Broncos know they have the opportunity to win a Super Bowl. And they are making sure they do what it takes to take advantage of that.

“It starts with Coach Fox,” cornerback Champ Bailey said. “He talks about it. And when you have guys that have been around the block a few times, 10-plus years, there’s several in our locker room that can tell them these opportunities don’t come. You look at (linebacker) Keith Brooking, prime example, Super Bowl his first year and not even close since. You see that around the league a lot. A lot of guys get close and they don’t get back. You’ve got to take advantage of these opportunities.”

The Broncos are a group of guys who like to be around each other. No doubt winning contributes to that but there is also no doubt that it is a good locker room. The importance of that cannot be underestimated, especially when games tighten up in the playoffs.

5) FOR AS GOOD AS THEY HAVE PLAYED, THE BRONCOS CAN STILL GET BETTER. After each of the last ten wins, the talk in the locker room has been about continuing to improve as much as the win they just earned.

Following the victory over the Browns, tight end Jacob Tamme summed it up perfectly on the 850 KOA postgame show.

“It sort of works like this. We know we have a good team. So we don’t need anyone else to tell us that because we also know that we can be better,” Tamme said matter-of-factly. “We know when we watch the film, we didn’t do everything perfect. There are things we can correct and improve on. You kind of start to lose that when you start listening to people on the outside (say), ‘Ah, these guys are playing so great.’ We know we’re playing pretty good and we know we have good players and good coaches and doing some things well. But we also know there are a lot of things we can do better. As long as we keep that mindset and keep improving, then we’ll be giving it our best shot every week.”

After one final regular season game, the frantic race for a silver football perched on a pedestal will be on and once Sunday’s game is over, the Broncos can finally focus on raising the Lombardi Trophy in New Orleans.

No doubt other good teams will be in the running to do the same. As things stand now, however, the Broncos are the team to beat.

What is the biggest obstacle to the Broncos winning the Super Bowl? Thanks for reading and sharing your thoughts.

Best,
Mike

Nose To The Grindstone

After taking care of the Ravens, the Broncos received a San Francisco treat on Sunday night.

Thanks to the 49ers win over the Patriots, the Broncos are in sole possession of the second seed in the AFC playoff race. A coveted first-round bye comes with the top two seeds. To clinch the second seed, the Broncos need to beat the Browns and the Chiefs in their final two weeks.

The beauty of the 2012 Broncos is that to them, they only have one game left, not two. They have the ability to keep their attention fixed on the task at hand. That task is sending the Browns back to Cleveland with a loss on Sunday.

“The only thing that’s going to mean something to me is if we play well and get better this week and try to beat Cleveland,” quarterback Peyton Manning said. “That’s really all we’re focused on. That’s been the best thing we’ve done all year is approach every opponent the same, regardless of who the team was and where we were playing and what the situation was and what their record was.”

A Good Bye

December 13th, 2012 - 7:57am by mike_riceOther posts by

Good bye.

Hello playoff run.

Yes, a week off in the first round of the playoffs is that important.

The Broncos don’t talk about it much. They don’t have to. In order to get a first round bye in the postseason, the Broncos need to keep winning. Therein lies the narrative.

Greatness On Display

December 4th, 2012 - 7:57am by mike_riceOther posts by

In sports, when a team goes through tough times, it seems like those times will never end. Similarly, when a team goes through good times, it seems like those times will never end.

The good times are rolling for the Denver Broncos.

On Sunday, they clinched the AFC West with a 31-23 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

It was the latest example of Peyton Manning’s immeasurable talent, Von Miller’s immeasurable impact and the Broncos’ incredible knack for having the heretofore anonymous player step into the spotlight.

Seriously, Mitch Unrein scored a touchdown?

All Different Ways

November 29th, 2012 - 8:14am by mike_riceOther posts by

Sometimes you have to do whatever it takes. That’s just what the Broncos are doing.

Last Sunday against the Chiefs, it took winning ugly. In the NFL, however, there is extra credit for style points and no penalty for lack thereof. There are W’s and L’s. And the Broncos got a W.

The Broncos got the win over the Chiefs while scoring a season-low 17 points. But it was also the second-fewest points they have allowed in a game this year. Denver surrendered six in a rout of the Raiders back in September.

A tough, defensive-minded football game might not be as fun to watch as a high-scoring one, but last Sunday against the Chiefs, the Broncos showed they can grind out a win the old-fashioned way. You can add it on to the various types of games the Broncos have won this year.

Time to Think Big

November 22nd, 2012 - 7:58am by mike_riceOther posts by

Players and coaches will only say they take it one game at a time. We are not, however, bound by any constraints.

So I’ll just say it.

The Broncos are good enough to make a run to the Super Bowl.

Ultimately, I don’t know if they’ll get there or win it. There is still a lot of football left and the unexpected is often the only predictable element in the NFL.

But I have the bandwagon out of the barn, hitched up and on its way.

Predictably, and correctly, the Broncos themselves are not talking in such a manner. They’re too busy making sure they do what is necessary to beat the Chiefs on Sunday.

“All we’re assured of right now is 7-9,” head coach John Fox said. “The best we can do is 13-3. What we become will be how we perform these last six games. We don’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves and we won’t. Right now, all of our focus is going to be on Kansas City.”

Movin’ On Up

November 15th, 2012 - 8:08am by mike_riceOther posts by

It is amazing to think how much ground the Broncos have covered since the beginning of the 2011 season. In seemingly no time at all, they have gone from nostalgic champion to reborn contender.

Soak it up and savor every moment. Times like these only seem like they will last forever.

And it seems like forever since the Broncos have enjoyed this kind of success.

There is little doubt that signing Peyton Manning was the key move in catapulting the Broncos back into the ranks of NFL elite. Yes, in case you’re doubting, the Broncos are proving to be very much an elite team with each passing week.

Bringing Manning on board, however, has hardly been the only important move the Broncos have made since the end of last season.
