Notebook: Injury Updates

Against the Chicago Bears in Week 14, Brian Dawkins injured his neck.

Since then, the veteran safety has missed three games — including last week’s 29-23 win in the Wild Card round of the playoffs — and was absent from the majority of a fourth game when he left the Buffalo contest in Week 16 in the first quarter.

But Head Coach John Fox said Wednesday that there is some positive news.

“He’s way further along this week than he was last week, and we’ll play it by ear,” Fox said of Dawkins. “When he gets cleared medically, we’ll have him out there.”

Dawkins (neck) did not participate in Wednesday’s practice, and neither did Eric Decker (knee) and Lonie Paxton (personal).

David Bruton (Achilles), Daniel Fells (ankle) and Elvis Dumervil (ankle) had limited participation, and Von Miller (thumb) participated fully in the session, which was moved indoors due to snow.

Fox was asked about those players’ injuries after practice.

Tuesday Transactions

On Tuesday, the Broncos calculated a little NFL arithmetic.

After subtracting Matthew Willis from the active roster by placing him injured reserve, the team signed Diyral Briggs from the practice squad.

The team filled Briggs’ spot on the practice squad by signing wide receiver Eron Riley.

Happy to Help

A day after scoring his first NFL touchdown in his first game action in more than a month, Tim Tebow had no interest in speculating on the future of the package of plays designed to get him involved in the offense.

The rookie quarterback, who finished Sunday’s loss to the Jets with six carries for 23 yards and a touchdown, was just happy to have been back out on the field, taking hits and playing the sport he loves.

“I’m just going to do whatever they ask me to do and try to do it with all my heart,” Tebow said with a smile.

Early Impressions

One of the hardest things to do is to evaluate preseason football. Teams keep play calling pretty vanilla. They protect their front line players. There is little, if any, talk of winning the games.

Yet here we are, halfway through the preseason. The Broncos have lost to the Bengals and the Lions, with games against the Steelers and Vikings still to come. I am left with several impressions.

Young ‘Lions’ in Our Lineup

Kyle Orton

Bruce Hall, Lance Ball, Eric Decker and Matthew Willis mixed in with Jabar Gaffney’s performance excited me. Yep, I’m a homer. Justin Fargas did a nice job, too. You know me if you’ve been reading this long enough. In preseason I look for bright spots and don’t really watch the game as much.

I liked what I saw out of the first team offense outside other than the tipped pass, which is going to happen from time to time, and the game got out of hand early, but by halftime we were only down by two. It was a nice drive during the 2-minute drill.

2010 Training Camp Day 4: P.M. Blog

After a brief lightning delay, the Broncos were back on the practice field for their evening workout. The rain subsided quickly, allowing players to take the field about thirty minutes later than the scheduled start of practice.

Fans readied themselves for the weather with raincoats and Broncos-orange ponchos, and two observers stood out in  day-glo yellow jumpsuits.

Willis Moved to Active Roster

January 2nd, 2010 - 12:44pm by Zach EisendrathOther posts by

On Saturday, the Broncos moved wide receiver Matthew Willis from their practice squad to the club’s 53-man active roster. To make room for Willis on the active roster, the team waived tackle Herb Taylor.

A second-year receiver out of UCLA, Willis joined the Broncos as a practice-squad signee on Dec. 24, 2008. He spent the final week of the 2008 season on Denver’s practice squad after a brief stint on Baltimore’s practice squad early in the year.

As a rookie in 2007, the 6-foot, 190-pound wideout saw time in five of the Ravens’ final seven games, totaling one tackle on special teams along with an 11-yard reception. Willis played two seasons of football at UCLA after competing on its track team and finished his Bruins career with 24 receptions for 248 yards with three touchdowns in 21 games.
