Preparing for the Unknown

At the ripe age of 25, Eddie Royal has assumed the role of the veteran among the team’s wide receivers. Royal’s 47 games played and 39 starts lead a position group where no other player has made more than two career starts.

“I’m only 25 years old,” Royal laughed. “It says a lot that they have a lot of faith in those guys and us to be able to come out and prepare the right way and to come make plays.”

Aside from Royal’s 39 starts, the rest of the group combines for five starts, which doesn’t give opposing teams much film to watch as they prepare to face this young receiving corps.

Watch Matt Willis on American Ninja Warrior

August 2nd, 2011 - 11:04am by Max HensonOther posts by

As an NFL wide receiver, Matt Willis possesses tremendous agility and strength.

Often, Willis utilizes those abilities on the football field as a member of the Denver Broncos, but this offseason Willis decided to test his skills somewhere else… as a ninja.

A ninja warrior, that is.

Willis said he occasionally watches the American Ninja Warrior television show on G4 and he always came away impressed with the participants. Willis also has a passion for obstacle courses and physical challenges, so when the opportunity presented itself to join the show in Venice, Calif., Willis jumped on it.

“My brother-in-law — he plays water polo for the U.S. National Team — and he got a call from a lady involved in the show and I was with him at the time,” Willis explained. “And I got all excited and told him to sign me up.

“Then I got the opportunity to do it.”

Practice Squad Additions

December 24th, 2008 - 12:38pm by Adam ZinserOther posts by

The Broncos have added a pair of players to the practice squad, Head Coach Mike Shanahan has just announced.

Running back Steve Baylark is back with the squad after spending a week with the team from December 10-17 before being waived.

Baylark entered the NFL with the Cardinals in 2007 as a college free agent from the University of Massachusetts, where he became just the third Division I-AA player to post four 1,000-yard rushing seasons. A second-team All-American as a senior at UMass, he finished his collegiate career with 1,080 rushes for 5,199 yards with 42 touchdowns.

New to the practice squad is wide receiver Matt Willis. The 5-foot-11, 190-pound receiver began this season on Baltimore’s practice squad before he was waived on Sept. 16. He saw time on both the Ravens’ practice squad and active roster as a rookie in 2007, appearing in five games for the year and totaling one catch for 11 yards along with two special-teams tackles.

The Ravens signed Willis in 2007 as a college free agent from UCLA, where he played two seasons of football after competing on the Bruins’ track team. He played 21 career games at UCLA, posting 24 receptions for 248 yards with three touchdowns.

And linebacker Tyson Smith, who has been on the practice squad for the last seven weeks, was signed to the Washington Redskins’ active roster.
