‘A Tremendous Relief’

December 23rd, 2010 - 3:44pm by Eric DetweilerOther posts by

A pair of knee injuries have forced Brian Dawkins to miss a total of five games in his 15th NFL season.

That meant five Sundays of watching as the Broncos took the field without him. Adding to that frustration, his team lost all five of those games.

Dawkins, who missed all three games on the team’s recently completed road trip, hopes to return to the field on Sunday against Houston at INVESCO Field at Mile High. The veteran safety wants to help his team complete a strong finish to an otherwise disappointing season.

“Sitting back and watching my guys out there going through what they’re going through and not being in it with them, it is a tough, tough pill to swallow,” Dawkins said. “So, being out there with them again is a relief for me — a tremendous relief.”

2010 Training Camp Day 17: A.M. Blog

August 17th, 2010 - 9:21am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

The Broncos returned to the Dove Valley practice field Tuesday morning for their first workout since Sunday’s preseason opening loss in Cincinnati.

The team opened their final week of training camp in shorts and shells on a sunny, but cool morning.

BACK IN ACTION

Several players made their return to the practice field Tuesday, including Chris Kuper and D.J. Williams, both of whom jumped right back into the first-unit offense and defense, respectively. Perrish Cox and Joe Mays practiced as well, despite getting shaken up during Sunday’s exhibition in Cincinnati.

Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker trotted out to the field and worked away from the rest of practice with Strength and Conditioning Coach Rich Tuten, running routes and catching passes.

Several veterans including Champ Bailey, Brian Dawkins and Daniel Graham sat out the session.

2010 Training Camp Day 12 Blog

As the Broncos took the field Thursday afternoon, a few rain clouds loomed in the distance but the sun was shining at Dove Valley. About 10 minutes into the stretching period, a strong wind started to blow and the camera towers started to shake. But despite the wind gusts, the team started the session strong in full pads to the delight of the 1,130 fans in attendance.

The Broncos turned in a productive workout as they began to ready for Sunday’s preseason opener in Cincinnati. Most of the 11-on-11 sessions were designed for either the offense or defense to simulate the Bengals with select players sporting red jerseys corresponding to Cincinnati players. Intensity took a back seat to learning for most of the day as both sides practiced against a variety of packages and formations.

The session ended on a good note when Matt Prater booted a 61-yard field goal to earn the team’s offseason champions a night without curfew. Several of his teammates started getting loud and the crowd joined in, but everyone was excited when the kick — hit with the wind at his back — easily cleared the uprights.

Eckel Adds More Competition

June 4th, 2010 - 10:43am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

The Broncos set out to add competition to the roster this offseason, and that hasn’t changed as OTAs continue.

Fourth-year fullback Kyle Eckel joined the team Friday, now one of two fullbacks on the roster alongside Spencer Larsen.

That means Matt Prater is the only Bronco without competition on the roster at his position.

Eckel, who is already practicing with the team this morning, has spent time with the Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, Philadelphia Eagles and most recently the New Orleans Saints.

Fresh off a Super Bowl XLIV win, Eckel has carried the ball 59 times for 175 yards and two touchdowns in his career, also hauling in three receptions for 20 yards.

The fullback played his college career at Navy, leaving the academy with 2,906 rushing yards — including 13 100-yard rushing games — and 25 rushing touchdowns. He became just the third player in school history to rush for more than 1,000 yards in a single season twice.

We’ll have more from Friday’s practice this afternoon.

Pro Bowl Voting Update No. 3

December 15th, 2009 - 1:48pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

With just one week of fan voting remaining, there haven’t been any changes in the number of Broncos in the top five at their respective positions for the AFC squad at the 2010 Pro Bowl.

The team has four players in the top five, and of those, one is tops at his position, two are in second and one is in third.

Champ Bailey remains the highest vote-getter among cornerbacks in the AFC. His teammate in the secondary, Brian Dawkins, is No. 2 at the strong safety position behind Pittsburgh’s Troy Polamalu. Elvis Dumervil is second at outside linebacker behind a Steelers player, as well — James Harrison. Eddie Royal rounds out the current list of Broncos in contention for the Pro Bowl, currently third at kick returner behind San Diego’s Darren Sproles and Cleveland’s Joshua Cribbs.

Finding His Footing

December 2nd, 2009 - 3:55pm by Chris GentilvisoOther posts by

Entering the Broncos’ Week 13 matchup with the Chiefs, Matt Prater has already earned a slew of 2009 accomplishments.

His seven field goals and seven touchbacks in September led to his first AFC Special Teams Player of the Month honor. His four field goals and five touchbacks in the 26-6 Thanksgiving victory over the Giants led to an AFC Special Teams Player of the Week award.

With a hostile road environment on the horizon this weekend in Kansas City, Prater is less focused on past praise and more geared toward a strong finish.

“So far it has been good, but we still have at least five more weeks,” Prater said. “I don’t even like knowing about it until after the season, because you always (think) about your next game which is the most important. Kansas City this week and try to have a good game this week.”

The last time Prater graced the Arrowhead Stadium grass, his leg produced history. Prater nailed two 50-yard field goals against the Chiefs on Sept. 28, 2008, becoming the third Bronco in club history to accomplish that single-game feat.

Pro Bowl Voting Update No. 2

December 2nd, 2009 - 9:58am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

With just three weeks of fan voting remaining, the Broncos currently have four players in the top five at their respective positions for the AFC squad at the 2010 Pro Bowl.

Of those four players, one is tops at his position, two are in second and one is in third.

The last time the NFL sent out a Pro Bowl voting update, Ryan Clady, Matt Prater and D.J. Williams were fifth at their respective positions. They are not listed this time around — so that simply means Broncos fans should use the next few weeks to continue to vote in their favorite players. Remember, there is no limit to the number of times fans can submit a ballot.

Balloting for the 2010 Pro Bowl will conclude on Monday, December 21 following the conclusion of Monday Night Football. The teams will be announced at 2 p.m. MST Tuesday, Dec. 29 on a special NFL Total Access 2010 Pro Bowl Selection Show on NFL Network.

Prater Kicks His Way to Weekly Award

December 1st, 2009 - 2:17pm by Zach EisendrathOther posts by

Matt Prater will be named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week, the Broncos learned on Tuesday, for his Week 12 performance in a 26-6 victory over the New York Giants.

Prater connected on all four of his field goal attempts (26, 32, 47, 24) in Thursday’s Thanksgiving night matchup and sent all seven of his kickoffs into the end zone, resulting in a career-high five touchbacks.

When all was said and done in Week 12, Prater accounted for 14 of the team’s 26 points on the evening, another career best for the third-year kicker.

Prater is the second Bronco to be named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week this season. Following a standout special teams performance against San Diego in Week 6, Eddie Royal won the same weekly NFL award.

Stepping Back In Time

October 9th, 2009 - 3:16pm by Chris GentilvisoOther posts by

They had seen pictures. They had heard a variety of different reviews.

On Friday, the Broncos got a first look at themselves in their 1960 retro uniforms.

Head Coach Josh McDaniels had the players practice in the new colors, getting them accustomed to the threads before Sunday’s Legacy Game against the Patriots. The full ensemble included the yellow jerseys, vertically striped yellow and brown socks, brown pants a brown helmet with numbers instead of a logo.

Ronald Fields was one of the first Broncos to try on the new look and his reactions were mixed.

“I don’t even know what to think anymore,” Fields laughed. “I thought our colors were blue, man. What’s up with this brown?”

Looking at the vertically striped socks, Matt Prater said the uniforms would add something fun to Sunday’s game against the Patriots.

“They’re pretty flashy,” Prater said of the socks. “I feel like a bumble bee in them but it’s different and it shouldn’t affect the game too much. You just play the game the same way and look a little different this time.”
