December 13th, 2011 - 3:29pm by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

Kicker Matt Prater will be named the Week 14 AFC Special Teams Player of the Week, the league informed the Broncos on Tuesday.

Prater matched his career long with a 59-yard field goal with three seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime. In overtime, Prater ended the game with a 51-yard game winner to give the Broncos a 13-10 victory over the Bears.

Prater joined Mike Vanderjagt (Ind., at Den., 11/24/02) as the only players in NFL history to kick a 50+yard field goal with less than one minute remaining to force overtime and then go on to kick an overtime game-winning kick from 50+yards.

Prater Ties the Game Late

December 4th, 2011 - 2:12pm by Kenny LeganOther posts by

Broncos kicker Matt Prater has kicked a 46-yard field goal to tie the game 32-32 with 1:33 remaining in the fourth quarter.

The score was set up by a 40-yard pass from Tebow to Demaryius Thomas down the right sideline to give Denver the ball at Minnesota’s 28-yard line. They weren’t able to get another first down, as Tebow’s pass to Thomas in the end zone on third down fell incomplete after Thomas battled for it with the defensive back.

The Vikings have two timeouts left and will start on their own 20-yard line after the touchback.

Prater Ties the Game

November 27th, 2011 - 5:17pm by Kenny LeganOther posts by

Matt Prater has just tied the game 13-13 with 1:34 left in the fourth quarter with a 24-yard field goal. The score concluded a 9-play, 68-yard drive, which included a key third-down conversion.

That conversion came when the Broncos had third-and-11 on their own 25-yard line. Tebow dropped back, and with great protection from the offensive line, stood in the pocket and delivered a strike downfield to Eric Decker for a 39-yard gain to the Chargers’ 36-yard line. Two plays later, Tebow hit tight end Dante Rosario for a 23-yard gain on the right sideline to give the Broncos the ball at the Chargers’ 12-yard line. Four plays later, Prater tied the game.

Tebow is now 8-for-15 for 133 yards passing and one touchdown to complement his 16 rushes for 50 yards.

Prater Narrows Deficit

Starting from their own 20-yard line, the Broncos engineered an 11-play drive, moving 57 yards down the field in 6:08 before Matt Prater knocked home a 41-yard field goal to trim the score to 13-10 in favor of the Chargers.

The possession was highlighted by a 21-yard run by Willis McGahee on the first play of the drive, and two third downs converted by Tim Tebow — one with a 7-yard run and another with a 14-yard bullet to Matthew Willis. The receiver made an impressive, diving catch in tight coverage, and Tebow was given plenty of time in the pocket by the offensive line.

The drive nearly continued with a pitch from Tebow to Eddie Royal, but the receiver was taken down short of the first-down marker to bring out Prater.

The ensuing kickoff went out of the back of the end zone, and a 1-yard rush by Chargers running back Ryan Mathews brought the third quarter to a close.

Broncos kicker Matt Prater connects on a 37-yard field goal to put Denver up 3-0 with 5:08 left in the first quarter.

The field goal capped a 6-play, 15-yard drive by the Broncos, highlighted by Eddie Royal’s 10-yard run on a jet sweep.

The Jets will start their second drive of the game on their own 20-yard line after Prater’s kick goes for a touchback. The Broncos defense held strong the last time out, forcing the Jets into a three-and-out to give the offense favorable field position.

Prater Pads Lead

November 13th, 2011 - 12:57pm by Kenny LeganOther posts by

Broncos kicker Matt Prater gives Denver some breathing room, putting Denver up 10-0 on a 38-yard field goal with 7:46 left in the second quarter. It was Prater’s 35th consecutive made field goal from inside 40 yards. His previous 34 successful tries was the third-longest current streak in the NFL coming into the game.

The Broncos ran eight plays for 34 yards on the scoring drive, with all those yards coming on the ground. Denver now has 135 rushing yards on 22 attempts, good for a 6.1 yards-per-carry average, and Tebow has attempted only one pass, which fell incomplete.

That scoring drive lasted 4:32 on the game clock, but was much longer as there were several timeouts taken on the field, giving the Broncos defense some quality rest.

Clutch Kicker

October 26th, 2011 - 9:13am by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

When Matt Prater took the field for the game-winning, 52-yard field goal last Sunday against the Dolphins, the fifth-year kicker approached the kick in the same way he does every attempt. That mindset has worked for him throughout his career, as he has never missed a kick (22-of-22) in his career in the fourth quarter or overtime.

“There’s only as much pressure as you put on yourself,” Prater said after Sunday’s game. “I always know (long snapper) Lonie (Paxton) and (punter/holder) Britton (Colquitt) are going to do their job – I just have to come through and make it.”

Prater is the only player in NFL history to convert every field goal attempted in the fourth quarter (min. 6 att.). Among kickers who entered the league since the 1970 merger, only Nick Folk made more consecutive field goals (24) in the fourth quarter or overtime to begin his career than Prater’s current streak of 22.

“That’s what we do at practice,” Prater said. “They expect me to come through and make the kicks. That’s my job, so I have to come in and make them.”

0-2 on Field Goals

October 23rd, 2011 - 11:54am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

The Broncos have twice driven deep into Dolphins territory, and twice come up empty.

So far, Matt Prater has missed field goals of 49 and 43 yards, and Denver trails Miami by three early in the second quarter.

It’s only the third time in Prater’s career that the kicker has missed two field goal attempts.

The most recent miss gave the Dolphins the ball at their own 33-yard line. We’ll keep you updated as the game rolls on.

Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway announced on Twitter that the team has extended qualifying offers today to the following restricted free agents: Ryan Harris, Matt Prater, Marcus Thomas, Kevin Vickerson and Wesley Woodyard.

No specifics have been revealed.

The announcement means the team retains the right to match any offer extended to the restricted free agents by another club. Teams may not begin negotiating with the restricted free agents until the start of the new league year, the date of which will depend on the signing of a new collective bargaining agreement.
