Thoughts on Matt Lepsis

Matt Lepsis

I assure you, we didn’t know that Matt Lepsis was going to tell The Denver Post that he would be retiring when we decided to put him on the cover of the most recently published Gameday magazine, sold at Sunday’s season-ending win over the Minnesota Vikings.

In retrospect, though, it proved to be a prescient choice, and a magazine cover seems a splendid complement to such an occasion, even if such a distinction runs contrary to the offensive line’s collective policy of shirking attention in exchange for public silence and devotion to its handiwork.

Training Camp Day 9: Morning Report

August 7th, 2007 - 2:32pm by AndrewOther posts by

Tony Scheffler
The skies above Dove Valley were drab Tuesday morning, and Head Coach Mike Shanahan felt that the performance of his team was equally so after a two-and-a-quarter-hour session that he termed “below average.”

“The intensity is there. Guys are tired, but they’ve got to work through it,” Shanahan said. “That’s what football’s all about; that’s what training camp is all about.”

However, one welcome sight was the return of tight end Tony Scheffler to the practice field. His time in his No. 88 jersey, however, was limited, as he went through calisthenics and installation drills, running a few routes before retreating to rehabilitation work.

“We tried to work him through about a 30-minute period, trying to get him used to running some routes,” Shanahan said. “He’s still a ways away.”

Jarvis Moss remained sidelined following the Monday morning scare he experienced with his left knee; he was on the field throughout the practice walking smoothly with his knee wrapped in a bandage. Other injuries, however, shook up the Broncos’ alignment as practice wound forward.

JOHN LYNCH: The 15th-year safety left the field late in the session after suffering a slightly bruised sternum on a collision with Travis Henry. Hamza Abdullah took his place with the first unit for the final periods of the morning.

“I’m all right. I’ve just been banging into Travis a little bit too much,” Lynch said. “Usually I grind through it, but they pulled me out … I’ll just come back and be ready to go tomorrow.”

MATT LEPSIS: The offensive tackle suffered what Shanahan termed “a little bit of a groin pull” and was replaced on the first unit by Adam Meadows for the final 45 minutes of practice.

“I’m not sure how serious it is right now, but it’s enough to keep him out,” Shanahan said. Lepsis did stay on the sidelines after incurring the injury.

MIKE BELL: The third-team running back was walking around slowly after being hit during team drills midway through practice and did not see much playing time thereafter, although he remained on the field.

OTA Day 1: Afternoon Notes

OTA Day 1

Greetings once again from the media room here at Broncos headquarters. It’s been about two hours since everyone left the field, and I’ve been busy working on a couple of stories from the day — and, later on, I’ll be putting together a video snapshot of the doings from here at Dove Valley.

For now, these notes:

… Head Coach Mike Shanahan expects wide receiver Rod Smith to return to the field by training camp. “That’s our goal — that the first time we start practice in July, he’s ready to go,” Shanahan said. “To do that, there’s going to be a lot of conditioning that goes on throughout the month of June through the middle of July. So hopefully when we strap it up for the first day of camp, he’ll be ready to go.”

… Assistant head coach Jim Bates expounded on the experiment of using safety Steve Cargile at weakside linebacker — which was in part due to his success on special-teams coverage units late last year. “It’s important that we’re able to fill our two-deep (roster) and get quality special teams guys,” Bates said. “He has the intelligence to play two positions.” …

… Kenard Lang practiced through sore shoulders, Head Coach Mike Shanahan said, and Bates noted that Nick Ferguson returned to practice. However, the rehabilitation work continued for Smith, Brandon Stokley, Matt Lepsis and Sam Brandon …

… Bates also said the rookie defensive linemen have “a lot of catching up to do,” adding, “Rookies are rookies, and just getting them lined up and getting them in their stance and in their initial steps takes longer for the rookies (on the line) than any other position. But also they should improve more than any of the other guys, given the ability level they have.” …

… It seemed like D.J. Williams answered as many questions about being tapped to lead the breakdown as he did about moving to middle linebacker. Perhaps it was because his first day as practice leader saw him brush aside Jarvis Moss’ efforts to open practice. “It’s the first day and we needed more intensity than that. I could tell he was a little nervous,” Williams said. “So I sent up one of our oldie-but-goodies, (David) Kircus. He’s always going to get up there and give you a good dance.”

… Wide receiver Brandon Marshall told media that he ran with the first team in Smith’s absence, but the main topic of conversation was his difficult offseason that has witnessed an arrest and the deaths of Damien Nash and Darrent Williams, both of whom were close friends of his. “I got in an incident with the law. We had two deaths. I’ve definitely grown up,” Marshall said. “It’s sad to say, but sometimes you have to bump your head or go through some things to actually learn, so I’m glad it happened now rather than down the road in my career, and I can guarantee that I’ll be on top of everything from here on out.”

And, in closing this entry, a few more shots:

Lepsis Out for Season

October 23rd, 2006 - 2:27pm by AndrewOther posts by

A Monday MRI examination brought the news that Matt Lepsis and the Broncos most feared — a torn right anterior cruciate ligament for the veteran left tackle that will end his season and necessitate a six-month rehabilitation.

He will undergo surgery following “about a 10-day recovery,” Shanahan said.

The injury is the first torn knee ligament any Broncos offensive lineman has suffered in a regular season since Tom Nalen saw his 2002 campaign end seven weeks into it with a torn anterior cruciate ligament suffered in a game at Kansas City.
