Haggan Comes Up With a Pick-6

December 4th, 2011 - 11:33am by Kenny LeganOther posts by

Linebacker Mario Haggan, starting in place of the injured Von Miller, has put the Broncos on the board with an interception returned for a touchdown.

On 2nd-and-8 from the Minnesota 9-yard line, Ponder dropped back and threw a pass which Haggan jumped in front of for his first career interception. He returned it 16 yards for his first career touchdown, carrying a few Vikings players into the end zone during the process.

It was the third defensive touchdown of the year for the Broncos, who now lead 7-2 with 5:50 remaining in the first quarter. It capped a strong opening three series for the defense, who forced a punt, fumble and interception. Denver’s three interceptions returned for touchdowns this season are tied for the most in the NFL in 2011.

The Vikings started the series on their own 7-yard line, thanks to a well-placed punt by Britton Colquitt and a great play by Matthew Willis as he jumped and batted the ball just as it bounced towards the end zone.

Quick Hits from Media BBQ

July 27th, 2011 - 4:06pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

Four players met with the media a day before the first practices of training camp — Brandon Lloyd, Mario Haggan, Elvis Dumervil and Brian Dawkins.

We’ll have much more from what all four of them had to say, including the full Dumervil interview courtesy of Broncos TV, later this afternoon.

In the mean time, here are a couple quick nuggets from the interviews.

Haggan said he hated to see Jabar Gaffney heading to Washington because of what he did for the team over the past two seasons, but understood the move.

Haggan to the Line?

June 20th, 2011 - 1:18pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

In an answer we didn’t include last week in his Q&A session with DenverBroncos.com, Linebackers Coach Richard Smith talked about his impressions of the linebackers he’s preparing to work with this season.

One key point that stood out was the fact that he put Mario Haggan into the same group as Elvis Dumervil and Robert Ayers, players Head Coach John Fox has already said he envisions as 4-3 defensive ends.

“You’d say why?” Smith said. “What it does is it upgrades the speed of our defense. Now you’re taking linebackers and they’re playing down linemen — it upgrades the athleticism of that position.”

I asked Smith to talk a little more about the role Haggan will most likely play in 2011 after rotating from outside linebacker to inside linebacker and back again in 2010.

‘Joe’ Haggan

Mario Haggan

Mario Haggan may have bounced around the Broncos defensive formation in 2010, but his impact remained constant.

After a career season, the eighth-year linebacker has earned a spot on USA Today’s 19th-annual All-Joe team, a group of 53 players who have never earned a Pro Bowl selection but deserve recognition for their unsung contributions.

What They’re Saying

January 5th, 2011 - 10:10am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

With the news that John Elway will join the Broncos front office as executive vice president of football operations, we thought we’d compile some recent quotes on the move. All of the quotes came before Elway officially assumed his new position.

Champ Bailey:
“Obviously he doesn’t have a track record of being involved, but for what he means to Denver, great move. I think his presence will definitely rub off on a lot of people, and this program definitely benefits from that. I’ve looked up to him since I’ve been here. He’s the man, he’s always going to be the man. I hope he can do some good things for us.”

“He’s effective. His voice, his presence, that’s all you need — somebody to be positively effective in this locker room. If you can find anybody like that, John Elway might be the guy.”

“I think when you talk about (John) Elway and then (Broncos Owner and CEO) Mr. (Pat) Bowlen and (Team President) Mr. (Joe) Ellis and those guys upstairs — they are going to do what is right. … I think with Mr. Bowlen, Mr. Ellis and Elway running this team, everything will be fine.”

Learning Curve

December 30th, 2010 - 2:54pm by Eric DetweilerOther posts by

As Tim Tebow continues to grow from his first few games as an NFL starting quarterback, Offensive Coordinator Mike McCoy said he’s learning right along with the rookie.

McCoy, who assumed playcalling duties three games ago, said he and the offensive staff have appreciated the chance to pick up added responsibility down the stretch this season.

“It’s a great opportunity to learn because there’s something that comes up every week,” McCoy said. “You’re never going to call a perfect game. There’s always going to be something that you want to call, or you want back that you called, and you learn from it.”

Mile High Momentum

December 22nd, 2010 - 3:54pm by Gabe HiattOther posts by

For the past three weeks, the Broncos have tread a rocky road full of pot holes. Consecutive business trips to Kansas City, Arizona and Oakland all added losses to the team’s record.

But they have the luxury of spending the holidays at home. The team finishes their schedule with a two-game home stand, including a matchup with the Houston Texans on the day after Christmas.

Mario Haggan hopes to find a little Mile High magic in front of the home crowd.

“It would be great to come home in front of our fans right after the holidays and have some holiday cheer on Sunday and go out and play a great game,” Haggan said.

New Job, Same Attitude

December 8th, 2010 - 4:09pm by Gabe HiattOther posts by

While some players were just getting to know Interim Head Coach Eric Studesville Wednesday morning, the running backs already knew what they would see.

After working with the coach all year, Correll Buckhalter said he observed no differences in the way Studesville addressed the team as the head coach and how he used to treat his position players.

“He was the same that he’s always been in the running backs room,” Buckhalter said. “He talked about how all he knew how to do was work. He wants everybody to come to work happy and just feel like you want to come here.”

A Position of Strength

November 17th, 2010 - 4:46pm by Gabe HiattOther posts by

Last week against the Chiefs, the linebacker corps contributed four sacks, a forced fumble and a touchdown to the winning effort. On Wednesday, the unit potentially became even deeper.

For the first time in more than a month, Robert Ayers stepped onto the practice field. Before suffering a foot injury in Week 5 at Baltimore, the second-year linebacker had tallied 1.5 sacks and earned a game ball from Head Coach Josh McDaniels after the win at Tennessee for his run-stuffing performance against Chris Johnson.

McDaniels said the team will take their time evaluating Ayers as the week goes on.

Certainty Under Center

October 27th, 2010 - 3:52pm by Eric DetweilerOther posts by

Last week injuries to his top two quarterback kept Oakland Head Coach Tom Cable from announcing a starter until gameday.

This week, the Broncos have the luxury of knowing who will be under center to begin Sunday’s game in London.

With No. 1 quarterback Alex Smith out with an injury, San Francisco Head Coach Mike Singletary has picked Troy Smith to lead his team. Singletary decided on the former Heisman Trophy winner who has spent the season as the No. 3 quarterback rather than backup David Carr.

“I just feel that (Troy Smith) gives a chance to win football games, I really do,” Singletary said in a Wednesday morning conference call. “So, I am excited about the opportunity for him and for us.”
