A.M. Blog: Day 16

August 12th, 2008 - 11:18am by Adam ZinserOther posts by

It’s less than 24 hours until the Broncos host the Cowboys for a couple days of joint practices, and the team held a two hour practice without pads Tuesday morning, the last day for fans to watch training camp.

As has often been the case, things got started with a laugh as D.J. Williams called up coach and former Bronco Keith Burns to lead the team’s breakdown.

ATTENDANCE REPORT: Hamza Abdullah, Boss and Champ Bailey, Louis Green, Peyton Hillis, Tom Nalen, Erik Pears and Ryan Torain were all listed on the out of pads list with their various injuries. Hillis did participate in practice, however. Champ, Green, Nalen and Pears all watched from the sidelines. Boss remained inside rehabbing his sprained ankle.

- Chad Mustard has been moved from the Physically Unable to Perform list to the active roster.

- New cornerback Wale Dada participated in practice after the team waived Lamont Reid. The previous blog entry gives a little more information on the newest member of the Broncos.

The Broncos were back on the field Monday afternoon for their first practice since the game at Houston. It was a full practice but didn’t get started until 2:45 so the players could have a little extra rest. There were a couple new names to the out of pads list, but a few familiar faces were back on the field as well. Here are some quick hits.

ATTENDANCE REPORT: Louis Green was at practice sporting a backwards orange hat and no neck brace, watching linebacker drills…Chad Mustard was back on the field, dressed out and running with the tight ends — sporting a freshly shaved head…Montrae Holland was dressed out as well and practiced with the offensive line…Hamza Abdullah, Boss Bailey, Champ Bailey, Ebenezer Ekuban, Peyton Hillis, Tom Nalen, Eric Pears and Ryan Torain were all on the out of pads list for Monday’s practice.

POSTURING FOR POSITION: During offensive drills, Jay Cutler harkened back to his high school days and lined up at safety…and helped lead the scout team on defense against the starters with Patrick Ramsey at the helm.

Training Camp Day 7: Practice Report

August 4th, 2007 - 12:08pm by AndrewOther posts by

Travis Henry
The bad news Saturday morning? Head Athletic Trainer Steve Antonopulos and training lieutenants Corey Oshikoya and Trae Tashiro were busy once again, attending to three players who incurred injuries during the full-pads practice.

The good news? The injuries to running back Travis Henry, defensive end Ebenezer Ekuban and weakside linebacker Louis Green were not serious, and Green managed to return to practice a half-hour after he fell to the grass on the final play of the goal-line period of practice.

“We lost a few guys the last few years to injuries in our goal-line period, and I thought we’d snuck away without an injury, but Lou Green stayed on the ground,” Head Coach Mike Shanahan said. “I thought the worst at first, but it looks like he’s all right. He got back to practice. He got a little bruise on his knee, so hopefully there’s no setback but for a guy to come back like he did, that’s a good sign.”

Henry, meanwhile, was bothered by a hip pointer that he initially incurred Friday. He made it through the first few periods, but then received treatment after it flared up.

“It just didn’t feel right,” he said.

He briefly returned for another play in nine-on-seven before heading to the sidelines for good.

“I probably could have finished if it was a game, but I want to be healthy when this thing starts, so they decided to pull me.”

“It’s normal — especially at the running back position. Any play, you can get nicked up, and unfortunately I got nicked up. I sucked it up and finished yesterday, and today did it again, and unfortunately I couldn’t go like I wanted to, so I just sat out.

Missing a few periods of practice usually isn’t a big deal to a player who is the clear starter at his position, but for Henry, this practice was going to be his opportunity to show why the Broncos invested in him, since it was heavily tilted towards goal-line plays — a point of emphasis that was one of the reasons why the Broncos sought him in March.

It was real disappointing. This is our first goal line, and I felt great at the beginning of practice. Then in nine-on-seven, I tweaked the hip pointer again,” he said. “We’ll have another chance in goal line, so I’ll get my looks.”

Ekuban, meanwhile, fell to the grass during the move-the-ball period at the end of practice, but he rose and walked to the sideline under his own power.

“He’s fine,” Shanahan said. “He just got a little banged up and got the wind knocked out of him, but he’s fine.”

Even with those injuries, the heavy hitting of the day nevertheless exacted a far smaller toll than last year’s full-pads practice, when the Broncos lost Gerard Warren for the remainder of the preseason with a dislocated toe. Warren was never quite the same that year, fighting through pain the entire season.

By comparison, the Broncos emerged barely scathed from the intense two-and-a-half-hour session this year — and that was the best news they could receive before heading into a one-day respite.

More to come, including a breakdown of the top plays of practice, some notes from the one-on-one line drills and plenty of photos.

OTA Day 2

Bon giorno from Dove Valley on a cloud-shrouded but nevertheless pleasant Thursday morning, one which saw the Broncos take the field for the second day of quarterback camp.

With only 10 minutes on the field, I figured I would get a good look at the quarterbacks today after watching the D-linemen go through warmup drills yesterday morning. In particular, I wanted to check out the two new quarterbacks, Darrell Hackney and Patrick Ramsey, although neither would show their full arm strength during the warmup segment of the session.

Not too much to report from the 10 minutes of open access today … aside from new kicker Brandon Pace being implored to hustle as he ran from one practice field to another in time for pre-practice stretching — although I must note that it looked to me like he was moving at a pretty brisk pace.

A few more photos follow below, and I’ll be back with more this afternoon after on-field player availability for interviews.

Season Review: Louis Green

February 19th, 2007 - 6:32pm by AndrewOther posts by

Louis GreenThe evidence of Louis Green’s value to the Broncos became clear on Monday when the team announced that the fourth-year linebacker had signed a three-year contract extension, thus bypassing a chance to test the restricted free-agent marketplace come March 2.

As in previous years with the Broncos, the balance of Green’s work came on special teams, where he finished the year with seven tackles, one forced fumble in Week 9 at Pittsburgh and a fumble recovery at San Diego in Week 14.

But the win over the Steelers also saw Green enjoy his most extensive action on defense, logging 27 plays and notching a solo tackle.

This past year also marked the first time he has ever played in all 16 games of an NFL regular season.

FINAL ANALYSIS: Selected by his teammates as the Broncos’ nominee for the Ed Block Courage Award in recognition of playing the season after the death of his mother following a long illness … Has 17 special-teams tackles in the last two seasons … The forced fumble and fumble recovery were the first of each in Green’s NFL career.

NEXT: Guard Ben Hamilton.
