Paxton Hosts Wounded Warriors

August 15th, 2012 - 6:50pm by Tyler EverettOther posts by

Thanks to long snapper Lonie Paxton and his friend Corey Fairbanks, the Broncos practice on Thursday afternoon took place with a handful of special guests watching from the VIP tent adjacent to the practice fields.

Paxton, who is the vice president of the Active Force Foundation, which makes four-wheel mountain bikes to be used by disabled sports communities, hosted a handful of wounded members of the U.S. Military.

“We brought all these wounded soldiers out today so they could get an opportunity to meet some of the guys,” said Fairbanks, Executive Director of the Colorado Adaptive Sports Foundation. “It means a lot to these guys to be able to come out and get thanked for their service. We’re pretty excited about it.”

Fairbanks said that he and the wounded members of the military thoroughly enjoyed interacting with the Broncos players.

“It’s great,” Fairbanks said. “These guys are just guys like everybody else. And we like hanging out with just guys. Getting to see these guys and say hello to all of them is a dream come true for a lot of guys.”

Broncos Sign Long Snapper David Binn

January 14th, 2012 - 4:05pm by Kenny LeganOther posts by

The Broncos made several transactions Friday to replace long snapper Lonie Paxton, who is unavailable for Saturday’s game against the Patriots after not practicing all week due to non-injury related reasons.

The team signed long snapper David Binn to the active roster and in turn, waived fullback Austin Sylvester. Binn is an 18-year veteran who spent the first 17 seasons of his career with the San Diego Chargers. He played in 179 consecutive games from 1998-2010 with San Diego and is no stranger to the postseason, having played in 12 career playoff matches with the Chargers.

He’ll be on the field for the Broncos Saturday wearing number 54.

Paxton’s Sporting Clays Challenge for a Cause

October 1st, 2010 - 10:01am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

On Tuesday, Sept. 28, Lonie Paxton helped put together a fundraiser to benefit the Active Force Foundation (AFF).

The inaugural Lonie Paxton Celebrity Sporting Clays Challenge was a success, held at Kiowa Creek Sporting Club near Bennett, Colo., and attended by fellow Broncos Kyle Orton, Brady Quinn, Russ Hochstein, Zane Beadles, J.D. Walton, Justin Bannan and Britton Colquitt, as well as Broncos Vice President of Security Dave Abrams.

In addition, U.S. Army wounded warriors from the Warrior Transition Battalion at Fort Carson, Colo., attended the event.

“When service men and women return from war or duty, AFF strives to create an experience that temporarily releases them from the constant mental and physical stresses they’re eduring,” Paxton said. “For AFF to have an impact on soldiers’ lives when they come back is the entire reason we do what we do. Our camps really show what the fundraising and our team can accomplish, but the events themselves are a way to involve teammates, the community, sponsors, servicemen and women, and the Active Force team in a fun environment that reiterates the purpose, but also have a fun time doing it.”

Training Camp Day 10 Blog

August 10th, 2010 - 3:23pm by Eric DetweilerOther posts by

After a day off, the Broncos were back on the practice field on Tuesday. Last week, dark clouds and rain greeted most of the afternoon practices, but today the sun was shining with very few clouds in sight. A crowd of 1,593 gathered to soak in the sun and watch the Broncos return to work with the preseason opener less than a week away.

In a pre-practice media session, Head Coach Josh McDaniels said he and his staff were productive during the two-day break, while it gave players a chance to rest and get treatment. It also gave the rookies, whose new and ridiculous haircuts created quite a stir at Saturday’s INVESCO Field workout, time to fix their veteran teammates’ clipping mistakes. Tim Tebow was among the freshly shaven rookies.

Cold and Rainy Minicamp

June 12th, 2010 - 11:44am by Eric DetweilerOther posts by

The calendar may say June 12, but the weather outside at Dove Valley had many thinking it was still early March. Rain, cold temperatures, dark skies and the occassional rumble of thunder marked the middle day of a mandatory three-day minicamp at Dove Valley.

As the practice opened in a steady rain, members of the equipment staff tried to keep the footballs dry by stuffing them inside their jackets. During the opening defensive drill stations, one of the exercises tested the players’ mettle in the messy conditions by forcing them to grab the slippery ball out of the air as if it was tipped or scoop fumbles off the slick grass.

Despite less than ideal conditions, the team still got in a full workout.

Finding His Footing

December 2nd, 2009 - 3:55pm by Chris GentilvisoOther posts by

Entering the Broncos’ Week 13 matchup with the Chiefs, Matt Prater has already earned a slew of 2009 accomplishments.

His seven field goals and seven touchbacks in September led to his first AFC Special Teams Player of the Month honor. His four field goals and five touchbacks in the 26-6 Thanksgiving victory over the Giants led to an AFC Special Teams Player of the Week award.

With a hostile road environment on the horizon this weekend in Kansas City, Prater is less focused on past praise and more geared toward a strong finish.

“So far it has been good, but we still have at least five more weeks,” Prater said. “I don’t even like knowing about it until after the season, because you always (think) about your next game which is the most important. Kansas City this week and try to have a good game this week.”

The last time Prater graced the Arrowhead Stadium grass, his leg produced history. Prater nailed two 50-yard field goals against the Chiefs on Sept. 28, 2008, becoming the third Bronco in club history to accomplish that single-game feat.

Dove Valley Update: March 13

March 13th, 2009 - 1:58pm by Adam ZinserOther posts by

On Monday, a number of guys were at Dove Valley continuing their rehab from injuries in 2008, or they were just stopping by. Today, a pair of Broncos stopped in after getting into town ahead of time for Monday’s offseason conditioning program.

Matt Prater and Brandon Stokley were hanging out down in the locker room. Both players have spent their offseason spending time with family back in their respective home states.

The kicker traveled down to Florida to enjoy time with his three brothers and the nice weather “instead of freezing out here” he said with a laugh.

“I hung out with the family back in Florida,” Prater said. “That’s pretty much it. I’ve been lifting weights, trying to stay in shape, but I took a little time off.”

One of his favorite things to do in his time off is go fishing, so he made up for lost time on the water by reeling them in with his brothers. A self-proclaimed “home body,” Prater isn’t one to do a lot of traveling. He’d rather just kick back with his family and enjoy spending time with them.
