Broncos vs. Bills: First Quarter Blog

15:00: The Bills call tails — it’s heads. Denver elects to receive, and the game is almost underway.

Eddie Royal is back deep to receive the Rian Lindell kickoff. He takes it five yards deep in the endzone and takes a knee for a touchback.

Denver will start first-and-10 on the 20.

The starters on offense are Jay Cutler at quarterback, P.J. Pope in the backfield, Ryan Clady, Ben Hamilton, Casey Wiegmann, Chris Kuper and Ryan Harris on the O-line, Brandon Marshall and Royal at receiver and Daniel Graham and Tony Scheffler at tight end.

14:00: Pope takes the first three carries of the game — picking up three, six, then 20 yards, setting up another first down at the Denver 49-yard line.

He follows that up with yet another carry, taking it for seven more yards up the middle.

Broncos vs. Bills: Pregame Notes

11:00 p.m. MST: Here we are, the final home game of the regular season at INVESCO Field at Mile High. The cheerleaders just finished practicing on the field, and the stadium staff is shoveling up a little bit of snow from around the player bench areas.

I’m back to live blogging the games, because as we’ve documented in the past, we in the Internet/Publications department are a superstitious bunch. I’ve got a decent record when I’m the blogger. Fellow intern Jake Grilley and I are even in the same seating arrangement from the last home game — a victory against Kansas City.

It’s nice and chilly out there — good football weather, but if you’re coming to watch the game, make friends with the person next to you because it’s going to be cold.

There are orange pom-poms in every seat, awaiting the capacity crowd’s arrival. I’m excited to see a sea of orange as the Broncos battle to clinch the AFC West and host a playoff game.

13:54: Jake Delhomme looks for Steve Smith on a screen but Dre’ Bly has him covered, but Delhomme throws it up and Smith grabs it before being rocked by Josh Barrett. Nontheless, first down. And on the very next play, Williams blows through the line and into the open field. 56-yards later, he is in the endzone. Kasey is good and the Panthers are now up by 17.

Broncos vs. Panthers: Second Quarter Notes

December 14th, 2008 - 12:42pm by Kyle SonnemanOther posts by

15:00: To start the second quarter, the Broncos will have it second-and-11 at the Carolina 29… Jay Cutler gives to Tatum Bell, but running room is hard to find. Gain of two, third-and-nine.

Cutler hits his favorite third down target, Brandon Stokley, for the first down.

13:44: Flag on the play after Cutler and Darrell Jackson couldn’t connect. Holding on Ben Hamilton and the Broncos are pushed back 10 yards. First-and-20, Cutler escapes the blitz and picks up four after Jon Beason stops him. After an incompletion to Brandon Marshall, it is third and long… Cutler, gives to Selvin Young, but he is stopped very short. In fact no gain on the play.

Brett Kern punts and Mark Jones signals for the fair catch at the 27-yard line.

Broncos vs. Panthers: Pregame Notes

1:34 p.m. EST: Hello from Bank of America Stadium in uptown Charlotte. It is a little overcast with temperatures expected to be in upper 40s. Not as cool as it is in Denver, where we hear it is around seven degrees right now. Yikes!

Anywho, most of the folks in the press box are gathered around the TV right now watching the Chiefs and the Chargers game.

We will be heading down to the field here in a bit for some photos and we will also have the pregame inactives and any lineup changes.

Looks like K.C. just jumped out on top. Should be interesting…

2:16 p.m. EST: And Kansas City adds to their lead, with Tyler Thigpen hitting Dwayne Bowe on a slant. 14-0 Chiefs. Very interesting game as well, the teams have exchanged turnovers and emotions seem to be rising. Are you guys watching? What do you think thus far?

INJURY UPDATES: Hillis is out with a right hamstring injury and Mario Haggan has a right knee sprain and is questionable.

Jay Cutler hits Tatum Bell for nine yards on first down and then has his pass intended for Daniel Graham deflected. Third-and-one, Cutler gives to Eddie Royal on the end around. Royal follows his blockers and gets eight yards and the first down.

13:20: On second down, Cutler hits a crossing Brandon Marshall who gets enough for the first down. Broncos now at midfield.

12:47: Cutler is not happy, not sure if the play didn’t come in or if there was a technical issue, but the Broncos use their final timeout.

Back from the timeout, Cutler pitches to Bell… Bell has room, he motors down the sideline for a big gain. 28 yards for Tatum Bell and the Broncos are at the 22 of Kansas City.

Broncos vs. Chiefs: Second Quarter Notes

December 7th, 2008 - 12:50pm by Kyle SonnemanOther posts by

15:00: The Chiefs will face a third-and-one at their 29-yard line to start the second quarter. Tyler Thigpen has Larry Johnson behind him, he gives to Johnson who gets the first down.

14:30: After the first down, Thigpen looks down the sideline for Tony Gonzalez, but rookie Josh Barrett has him covered. Incomplete and Barrett lets everyone know about it.

Second down, Thigpen throws it right to Wesley Woodyard, looks like he fumbled after the catch and the Broncos recover. But did he have possession? The refs say yes, but Herm Edwards says no. We will have another challenge. Josh Bell made the recovery for the Broncos, but it remains to be seen if Woodyard has possession before he fumbled.

INJURY UPDATE: Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles has an ankle injury and is questionable to return.
