Making Their Mark

December 2nd, 2010 - 3:27pm by Eric DetweilerOther posts by

With four starters in the secondary with at least nine years of NFL experience, there’s not much the veteran unit hasn’t seen on the football field.

That’s good news for safety Kyle McCarthy and the three other rookies who have emerged in supporting roles throughout the season.

“It’s huge,” said McCarthy, who has played all six games since being promoted from the practice squad on Oct. 16. “It gives you a sense of calm knowing they’re out there with you and if you have a question they can help you out.”

McCarthy along with rookie cornerbacks Perrish Cox, Cassius Vaughn and Syd’Quan Thompson have all seen time on defense this season, showcasing an ability to adapt to the pro game quickly. They all are playing roles on special teams with many practicing at multiple defensive positions, putting an added emphasis on being prepared each Sunday.

Broncos vs. Jets: Pregame Blog

October 17th, 2010 - 12:33pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

Week 6 is upon us, and as the NFL Redzone channel is flashing on the Thundervision screen above the field, players for the Broncos and Jets are warming up for the 2:05 p.m. MDT clash.

A roster move to announce — the team has elevated safety Kyle McCarthy and linebacker Kevin Alexander to the active roster from the practice squad. To make room for the move, the club waived offensive lineman D’Anthony Batiste and running back Andre Brown. The moves come in anticipation of a contest in which the Broncos will be without Brian Dawkins and Robert Ayers — two of five defensive players out for the game.

A change for this week’s home game — the end zone is painted with all orange diamonds. A Broncos logo adorns midfield, and a pink ribbon celebrating Breast Cancer Awareness Month adorns both 25-yard lines.

Robert Ayers is on the field — but the only other Broncos warming up at the moment are returners. Syd’Quan Thompson, Eddie Royal and Perrish Cox are visible from up in the press box.

Jets special teamers Nick Folk, Steve Weatherford and Tanner Purdum are on the field in full uniform — the Jets will be wearing their all-whites this afternoon. The Broncos, as you may have heard, will don their orange alternate jerseys as part of “Orange Sunday.” Fans are encouraged to wear orange today — and the fans who have made their way into the stadium already seem to be following that charge. So if you’re at home to watch the game, go ahead and throw on some orange and be part of this movement.

12:37 p.m. MDT: Jets PR just announced that Darrelle Revis will be active for today’s game.

Cold and Rainy Minicamp

June 12th, 2010 - 11:44am by Eric DetweilerOther posts by

The calendar may say June 12, but the weather outside at Dove Valley had many thinking it was still early March. Rain, cold temperatures, dark skies and the occassional rumble of thunder marked the middle day of a mandatory three-day minicamp at Dove Valley.

As the practice opened in a steady rain, members of the equipment staff tried to keep the footballs dry by stuffing them inside their jackets. During the opening defensive drill stations, one of the exercises tested the players’ mettle in the messy conditions by forcing them to grab the slippery ball out of the air as if it was tipped or scoop fumbles off the slick grass.

Despite less than ideal conditions, the team still got in a full workout.

Final Week of Passing Camp

June 7th, 2010 - 11:40am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

The Broncos took the field on Monday for the final week of passing camp. Monday’s practice — like Friday — was an “opportunity practice” for rookies and younger players to get some on-field work as the veterans worked out separately.

One new sighting was third-round pick Eric Decker, who was running back and forth catching passes from strength and conditioning coach Rich Tuten away from the rest of practice.

Demaryius Thomas, Ryan Harris and J.J. Arrington — all of whom returned to practice last week — were involved in the team portions of practice for the first time.
