Now Hold On Just A Minute

I know the Colts are undefeated. I know they have the best quarterback in the NFL. I know they are hosting the Broncos.

But unlike certain past trips to Indianapolis, the Broncos have a shot to win.

Most Broncos fans have a tough time forgetting the debacles of playoffs past in Indianapolis. If they did forget, this week probably reminded them of the Broncos inability to keep those games competitive.

To this point, the Colts have shown themselves to be the best team in the AFC. At home, they are rightly the favorite against a Broncos team that keeps showing people wrong.

I would not be shocked, however, if the Broncos at least kept the game competitive and even won. Here are a few reasons why.

After rushing for a combined 199 yards against the Chiefs in Week 13, Knowshon Moreno and Correll Buckhalter have each received a weekly award.

For an NFL high fourth time this season, Moreno has been named Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week. The Georgia product rushed for 86 yards and two touchdowns in the Broncos’ 44-13 victory at Arrowhead Stadium. He is the only rookie to win the award four times this season, as Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez won it during Week 1 through Week 3.

With 113 rushing yards on 12 carries against the Chiefs, Buckhalter has been named FedEx Ground NFL Player of the Week. The nine-year veteran is the first Bronco to win the award this season.

When asked how the two complement each other, Head Coach Josh McDaniels said each back has their own method to reach the edge of a defense.

44-13 and 35:55 Time of Possession

December 6th, 2009 - 3:08pm by mark_cooperOther posts by

Just run it!!!…45 rushes for 245 yards. Yep, run baby run!! My thoughts exactly all week thinking if we built off last weeks accomplishments in the running game, where better to test it. Yep, KC in December.

What? 1-for-17 until today scoring more points than have ever been scored there.

Tough place to play…promise. Congrats to Coach McDaniels. Played there in a 37-below-zero wind chill and it was just plain cold….tough place. Seems like they always had our number….but there are new sheriffs in both towns, so hopefully the tide has changed. Good thing!

Sixty-six percent efficiency in the red zone and the offensive line was spectacular. Pittsburgh lost, New England lost, good stuff.

Sometimes you don’t even need to look at the stats as the game was all telling…this week wasn’t that much different but it was fun to take a peek and see just how dominating they were.

Forward Progress

November 16th, 2009 - 5:33pm by Chris GentilvisoOther posts by

Through his first nine games as a pro, Knowshon Moreno’s versatility has surfaced early and often.

No rookie has recorded two 100-yard games from scrimmage — except for Moreno. He’s also set himself apart through the air, as the lone NFL newcomer with both a rushing and receiving touchdown this season.

Moreno turned in a career-high 97 rushing yards against Washington on 18 carries. Week by week, the rookie is improving in an area the Broncos stress to their backs — gaining yardage on every play.

“There were some plays where there wasn’t much there, but he didn’t go negative,” Head Coach Josh McDaniels said. “He went, got a yard, got a two-yard gain here or there and kept us in positive situations. That is something that he’s doing better and better as the year goes on.”

Getting the Ground Game Going

November 11th, 2009 - 3:37pm by Chris GentilvisoOther posts by

Entering last Monday’s contest with the Steelers, the Broncos were aware of the potent run defense on the Pittsburgh sideline.

That awareness did not translate into results on the field, as Denver finished with a season-low 27 yards on the ground.  Pittsburgh’s front seven maintained its No. 1 tag, squelching any chance for a balanced attack from the home team.

“We’d love to get balance,” Kyle Orton said. “It’s tough when you have 20 yards rushing or whatever we had. It’s tough. Saying that, there’s games where it’s going to happen and you’ve got to rely on the passing game.”

For the second consecutive week, Knowshon Moreno has been voted Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week, the NFL announced on Friday.

Making his first career start in the pros, Moreno was a large contributor in the club’s 20-17 Week 5 overtime win over the New England Patriots — pacing the Broncos with 21 carries for 88 yards and adding four receptions for 36 yards, including a 27-yard screen play that setup the game-tying touchdown.

Voters on NFL.com selected Moreno over four other finalists for the award — Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez, Eagles wide receiver Jeremy Maclin, Giants wide receiver Hakeem Nicks and Colts wide receiver Austin Collie.
