Injuries Prompt Late-Season Shifts

December 28th, 2009 - 5:28pm by Chris GentilvisoOther posts by Chris Gentilviso

A pair of knee injuries will force the Broncos to shift some spots for their Week 17 battle with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Head Coach Josh McDaniels announced at his Monday press conference that Russ Hochstein and Kenny McKinley were both being placed on injured reserve today. He added that Hochstein needs surgery, while McKinley is still being evaluated.

Hochstein has started 10 games this season, including the last eight at left guard. Offensive coordinator Mike McCoy said that loss will challenge another player to fill the void, but within the same constructs of what the team has accomplished with Hochstein.

“He has done a nice job since he’s stepped in and started playing,” McCoy said. “The next guy’s going to have to step in and do a good job. We’ve got to continue doing what we’ve been doing with him in there.”

Larsen and Royal Ruled Out

At his Friday afternoon press conference, Head Coach Josh McDaniels said Spencer Larsen (hamstring) and Eddie Royal (neck/head) have been ruled out of Sunday’s Week 16 matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles.

With Larsen and Royal’s absences, a host of other players will get some additional chances. McDaniels said Peyton Hillis will serve as the team’s primary fullback, while several other receivers could be called on to fill Royal’s void.

One of those individuals is rookie Kenny McKinley, who’s made an early dent in the kicking game. The South Carolina product has appeared in six games this season, with six kickoff returns for 136 yards and three punt returns for 37 yards.

Wednesday’s practice came to a close with the Broncos completing an hour-long session chock full of different drills and installments.

Brandon Marshall, Lucas Taylor and D.J. Williams missed the morning session. Head Coach Josh McDaniels said it was due to residual soreness.

Here are some quick hits from Wednesday:

  • Brandon Stokley was at camp early for a second day in a row. His son, sporting a Carmelo Anthony Nuggets jersey Tuesday, wore an Eddie Royal jersey on Wednesday. Chad Jackson and Lonie Paxton were a few of the players spotted walking around Dove Valley today.
  • Linebackers coach Don Martindale had Wesley Woodyard and Lee Robinson working on goal-line stands, with each rotating between the tight end and linebacker position.

    A New Transition

June 30th, 2009 - 10:06am by Zach EisendrathOther posts by Zach Eisendrath

Through the better part of three decades as a collegiate head coach, Steve Spurrier has instructed his share of talented wide receivers.

From his 12-year tenure at Florida and on through his current post at South Carolina, Spurrier has worked with a number of NFL-caliber wide outs in the Southeastern Conference — thirteen-year NFL veteran Ike Hilliard, Minnesota Vikings 2007 draft pick Sidney Rice and first-year Bronco Jabar Gaffney are a few names that come to mind.

Yet, Spurrier has labeled a different individual as the “best wide receiver I’ve ever coached.” The ol’ ball coach has given that distinct honor to Broncos fifth round draft pick Kenny McKinley.

“I really appreciate Coach Spurrier and look up to him. Those comments coming from him, with all the people that he has coached, is a big statement,” McKinley said at his post-draft press conference. “When I heard that he said that it really got to me because he got me to where I am today coming from playing QB in high school to being a pretty good receiver playing in the NFL for the Denver Broncos.”
