Only three running backs have surpassed the 100-yard mark against the Denver defense in 2012. The last one to do it – the Chiefs’ Jamaal Charles — is coming to Denver on Sunday.
Denver has faced a handful of elite rushers in 2012 and has fared well enough to stand as NFL’s the third-ranked rush defense heading into Week 17.
But five weeks ago, Charles ran it 23 times for 107 yards against the Broncos. The Chiefs hope to feed them another heavy dose of Charles on Sunday.
“Jamaal has done a really nice job for us, has a chance to become a 1,500-yard rusher and that’s something that doesn’t happen every day,” Kansas City Head Coach Romeo Crennel said in a conference call. “Everybody can’t do that. He has good ability and he’s helped this team quite a bit.”

The Broncos earned their sixth consecutive win with a 17-9 victory over the Chiefs on Sunday. The current stretch, which ties for the fourth-longest single-season winning streak in team history, makes Denver the only NFL team with six straight wins in each of the last two years.

Third-and-3 from the Denver 16: On the first drive of the game, the Chiefs marched down the field and were knocking on the door when they decided to go to a trick play on third down. Running back Peyton Hills took a direct snap and ran to his right before stopping and throwing across the field to quarterback Brady Quinn. Elvis Dumervil was there in coverage and the pass fell incomplete, forcing Kansas City to settle for a 34-yard field goal from Ryan Succop.
Fourth-and-12 from the Denver 18: After a 39-yard Britton Colquitt punt, Kansas City punt returner Javier Arenas brought the punt back 20 yards, setting up the Chiefs with a first down at the Denver 37. Kansas City turned that strong field position into points with a 22-yard field goal by Succop to open a 6-0 lead.
Third-and-5 from the Kansas City 43: With the Chiefs looking to add to their 6-0 advantage in the second quarter, linebacker Von Miller collected his 14th sack of the season, dropping Quinn for a 1-yard loss to bring up fourth down.
Third-and-8 from the Denver 33: Linebacker Wesley Woodyard ruined the Chiefs’ scoring plans with a third-down sack of Quinn. The play resulted in a loss of 9 yards and knocked Kansas City out of field goal range.
Head Coach John Fox
On whether the game was tougher than expected
“No, they’re all tough. When you’ve been doing this as long as I have, 24-years worth, you know they’re always tough. We knew this was going to be a tough game. We talked all week – our guys knew. Again, we watched the tape. We knew they were a very talented defense. They played us very tough and we expected it.”
On not forcing any turnovers and not allowing touchdowns
“Well, we did get one there at the end, but that was kind of garbage time. We did get the one interception. But, hats off to our defense. We struggled a little bit on the run, but they’re a very good run team. That back combo is as good as there is in the lead. (Jamaal) Charles came into the game as the fourth-leading rusher in the AFC, so we knew they were going to try to play keepaway and run the ball. I thought our defense did a great job on third down. I think the stats were about 3-of-14, which is going to be critical to get it back and eliminate those touchdowns. They had three trips and again, it’s something we work really hard on – the red area. Holding them to three field goals was key in the game.”
On running back Knowshon Moreno
“We kind of knew that – we didn’t want to tell a lot of people, but Knowshon has had a great attitude. Things haven’t gone perfect for him. I knew he would perform well, his teammates knew he would perform well and he did. We’re proud of his effort.”

THOMAS TOPS 1,000, BRONCOS ADD TO LEAD: Demaryius Thomas reached the 1,000-yard receiving mark on the season and the Broncos extended the lead to 17-9 with a field goal.
The Broncos made it six wins in a row with a 17-9 defeat of Kansas City Sunday.
After a slow start that saw the Chiefs lead 6-0 late in the first half, Denver got on the board for the first time with a 7-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Peyton Manning to tight end Jacob Tamme with 23 seconds to play in the first half.
Kansas City added its third field goal of the afternoon to retake the lead at 9-7 midway through the third quarter, but Denver responded with a 30-yard touchdown pass from Manning to wide receiver Demaryius Thomas just three minutes later for a 14-9 lead.
Both team’s defenses were stout the rest of the way, with the Chiefs and Broncos failing to score until Denver salted the game away with a 12-play, 68-yard drive that culminated in a 34-yard field goal by kicker Matt Prater. After taking over possession with 6:24 to play in the fourth quarter, the Broncos added Prater’s field goal with just 14 seconds remaining to seal the deal.
On the afternoon, Manning finished 22-for-37 for 285 yards and two touchdowns, with four completions apiece to running back Knowshon Moreno, Tamme and wide receivers Eric Decker, Thomas and Brandon Stokley. Moreno also picked up 85 yards rushing on 20 carries to help balance the offensive attack.
Defensively, Denver limited Kansas City to just 264 yards of total offense and kept the Chiefs out of the end zone.
Wide receiver Demaryius Thomas’ 27-yard third-down catch in the fourth quarter allowed the Broncos to keep the ball moving and drain additional clock en route to a 34-yard Matt Prater field goal which gave the Broncos a 17-9 lead.
It also put the wide receiver over the 1,000-yard mark for the first time in his three-year career, becoming the 31st player in team history to hit that milestone in a season.
On the season, he now has 61 catches for 1,015 yards and six touchdowns – all three career highs.
Thomas is the game’s leading receiver with 82 yards on four catches.
On the drive, he made a pair of first-down grabs as the offense soaked up 6:10 of clock and left the Chiefs with :18 remaining.
Running back Knowshon Moreno helped the drive along with six carries.
