Cutler Has the Touch Again

December 8th, 2008 - 1:14am by mike_riceOther posts by mike_rice

They came. They fell behind. They battled back to win. They sustained another tough injury. And No. 6 came up absolutely huge. It was just another Sunday at the office for the Broncos.

But as is usually the case in the NFL, those are just the superfluous details decorating Sunday’s bottom line, which was a win over the Chiefs, 24-17.

By now, the Broncos have long since buckled the seat belt to the roller coaster ride that is the 2008 season. Wherever and whenever the ride ends, one has to admire the way this team continues to battle, continues to gut it out, continues to overcome itself and continues to insert obscurity into its lineup and win.

Running back Peyton Hillis was the latest impact player to succumb to injury, hurting his hamstring in the second half. Head coach Mike Shanahan told 850 KOA after the game that things didn’t look good for the rookie out of Arkansas, who might miss several weeks. We should know more early this week.

No matter. Tatum Bell, while hardly unstoppable, was effective enough to keep the Chiefs’ defense honest to pay a degree of attention to the Broncos’ running game.

More importantly, quarterback Jay Cutler engineered three scoring drives of 80 yards or more. The final one was a 12 play, 95 yard gem that consumed 6:07 and resulted in the go-ahead touchdown on a six yard pass to Brandon Marshall with 10:10 left in the game.

Broncos vs. Chiefs: Fourth Quarter Notes

December 7th, 2008 - 12:52pm by Kyle SonnemanOther posts by Kyle Sonneman

INJURY UPDATES: Hillis is out with a right hamstring injury and Mario Haggan has a right knee sprain and is questionable.

15:00: Broncos will have it first-and-10 at their 23 yard-line to start the fourth quarter.

Jay Cutler hits Tatum Bell for nine yards on first down and then has his pass intended for Daniel Graham deflected. Third-and-one, Cutler gives to Eddie Royal on the end around. Royal follows his blockers and gets eight yards and the first down.

13:20: On second down, Cutler hits a crossing Brandon Marshall who gets enough for the first down. Broncos now at midfield.

12:47: Cutler is not happy, not sure if the play didn’t come in or if there was a technical issue, but the Broncos use their final timeout.

Back from the timeout, Cutler pitches to Bell… Bell has room, he motors down the sideline for a big gain. 28 yards for Tatum Bell and the Broncos are at the 22 of Kansas City.

Broncos vs. Chiefs: Third Quarter Notes

December 7th, 2008 - 12:51pm by Kyle SonnemanOther posts by Kyle Sonneman

15:00: The Broncos will get the ball to start the second half. Eddie Royal is back deep for the Broncos along with Chad Jackson. Connor Barth kicks it three-yards deep and Royal takes it out to the 19-yard line.

The Broncos start their first drive without Peyton Hillis. Jay Cutler hits Tatum Bell for seven yards on first down and then Bell picks up enough for the first down on the following play.

13:40: Cutler rifles a pass through the hands of a defender going for the pick, and on the other side to haul it in is Darrell Jackson for a first down.

Broncos vs. Chiefs: Second Quarter Notes

December 7th, 2008 - 12:50pm by Kyle SonnemanOther posts by Kyle Sonneman

15:00: The Chiefs will face a third-and-one at their 29-yard line to start the second quarter. Tyler Thigpen has Larry Johnson behind him, he gives to Johnson who gets the first down.

14:30: After the first down, Thigpen looks down the sideline for Tony Gonzalez, but rookie Josh Barrett has him covered. Incomplete and Barrett lets everyone know about it.

Second down, Thigpen throws it right to Wesley Woodyard, looks like he fumbled after the catch and the Broncos recover. But did he have possession? The refs say yes, but Herm Edwards says no. We will have another challenge. Josh Bell made the recovery for the Broncos, but it remains to be seen if Woodyard has possession before he fumbled.

INJURY UPDATE: Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles has an ankle injury and is questionable to return.

Broncos vs. Chiefs: First Quarter Notes

December 7th, 2008 - 12:49pm by Kyle SonnemanOther posts by Kyle Sonneman

15:00: A blustery 64 degrees on this December afternoon as Matt Prater prepares to kickoff, back deep for the Chiefs is Jamaal Charles. Hopefully Prater can get back to his habit of knocking it through the endzone. Charles bobbles it, then gets a big return to the 40-yard line.

Starting on defense:
DE Elvis Dumervil
DT Dewayne Robertson
DT Marcus Thomas
DE Ebenezer Ekuban
SLB Jamie Winborn
MLB Nate Webster
WLB Wesley Woodyard
CB Josh Bell
CB Dre’ Bly
SS Marquand Manuel
FS Vernon Fox

14:48: After a Tyler Thigpen incompletion and a short run by Larry Johnson, the Chiefs are facing a fourth-and-seven. Thigpen in the gun, keeps it but he is going to be short. He gets five on the play before Wesley Woodyard stops him.

Broncos vs. Chiefs: Pregame Notes

11:46 a.m. MST: According to dictionary.com, superstition is defined as any blindly accepted belief or notion. So with the final four games in front of us and the playoffs within reach, I think all of Broncos Country is pulling out their superstitions. And those of us that work for the team are no different. Typically my blog duties only come on the road. But since I have had a good run of luck while blogging, the duties are on my plate today.

The Broncos will be decked out in their orange jerseys and white pants this afternoon — the same look they had in their Week 3 victory over the Saints (superstitious?). It is a balmy December day, with temperatures expected to reach the 60s. And we better enjoy it, looks like snow and cold are headed back our way.

I am going to head down on the field with Jake Grilley to grab some photos and I will be back with the inactives as well.

12:41 p.m. MST: PR has just handed me the inactives for today’s game. For the Broncos; Marlon McCree, Champ Bailey, P.J. Pope, Selvin Young, Andrew Pinnock, Herana-Daze Jones, D.J. Williams and Tim Crowder are all inactive.

12:49 p.m. MST: For the Chiefs; CB Patrick Surtain, TE Michael Merritt, LB Pat Thomas, LB Donnie Edwards, G Tavares Washington, T Andrew Carnahan, G Adrain Jones and WR Mark Bradley.

A couple of lineup changes for today’s game. Peyton Hillis will start at running back for Young, Josh Bell starts for Bailey, Vernon Fox starts for McCree, Spencer Larsen will start at fullback for Hillis and Wesley Woodyard will start for Williams.

For the Chiefs, Rocky Boiman and Derrick Johnson will switch spots. Johnson will man the middle while Boiman moves outside. And Devard Darling starts at wide receiver for Bradley.

“It Goes Deep”

December 5th, 2008 - 3:36pm by Adam ZinserOther posts by Adam Zinser

Much of the snow remained, and the temperature was probably still below freezing, but that didn’t keep the Broncos from being in high spirits as they wrapped up their week of practice Friday morning.

NEVER

Last night on the NFL Network, the Chargers and Raiders faced off in a game that had many a Bronco staring at the television.

Many hoped for the Raiders to pull the upset and push the Chargers further away from playoff contention, but at least one person at Dove Valley didn’t think along those lines — the Head Coach.

“I never pull for the Raiders,” Head Coach Mike Shanahan said after practice. “No matter what the case is. That shows you it goes deep.”

Fixing The Mistakes

October 2nd, 2008 - 4:10pm by Adam ZinserOther posts by Adam Zinser

Whenever Brandon Marshall feels he has a bad or even so-so game, he takes it upon himself to make all the necessary corrections to turn things around.

That is certainly the case this week as he prepares for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“I couldn’t sleep Tuesday night,” Marshall said in his press conference Thursday. “I was anxious, and I was looking forward to practice. Just getting out there and being able to polish up some things.”

The Only Answer is to Keep on Working

September 30th, 2008 - 8:57am by jim_saccomanoOther posts by jim_saccomano

No matter what the question is, that is the answer.

And that much is true whether it involves one’s job, relationships, weight control, or any other situation one might imagine.

And that is the situation in which the Denver Broncos find themselves after the loss at Kansas City. Many fans and media types which it were otherwise, but it is not. The key factor to punch into the equation, however, is that the situation would not be even slightly different if the Broncos had won against the Chiefs.

No matter what, the season is one quarter over and Denver is an excellent 3-1 at this time.

Keeping Their Heads Up

September 29th, 2008 - 5:29pm by Jake GrilleyOther posts by Jake Grilley

Talk in the Broncos locker room on Monday was centered on the team’s 33-19 loss to the Chiefs. Head Coach Mike Shanahan reiterated that no matter how talented a football team is, if it doesn’t execute the game plan and mistakes pile up it is going to be hard to come away victorious in the National Football league.

“I just want to work on the things we did poorly,” Shanahan said. “We talked about red zone being 1-for-4 and turnovers being 4-to-1. We talked about missed tackles and gap responsibilities and we still have to improve on our third downs. All the things we did poorly in the game, you try and work on and eliminate those mistakes.”

The discussion among many of the Broncos during the team’s first three wins was the chemistry and the cohesiveness of the players in the Denver locker room. Marquand Manuel said that same camaraderie is still being felt in the locker room after the team’s first loss of 2008, and it is that team character that will help to define this team for the remainder of the season.
