Winning for Teammates

December 19th, 2012 - 4:23pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

With so many veterans on the team, the Broncos have had the chance to grab wins for former teammates in a variety of venues.

Defensive tackle Justin Bannan, for example, spent four years in Baltimore. When the Broncos took on the Ravens last week, Bannan was a game captain. And the defense made sure to do its part to grab a win for the former Raven.

This week, the team travels to Cleveland, where safety Mike Adams spent the previous five seasons.

“Oh yeah, he’s the guy this week,” defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson said of Adams. “Last week it was Bannan. This week it’s Mike. We have a team full of guys for everybody, a lot of different pieces. We’re jelling together and I think it’s Mike’s turn for us to try to get him a win against Cleveland.”

As for Adams, he said he’s “definitely looking forward” to taking on his former teammates.

“All I know is that this group of guys that I’m playing with, nothing to take away from the guys that I played with because I loved that group and I still talk to most of the guys on defense, but this group that I’m playing with is something special,” he said. “We have something special going.”

As for whether he’s heard from former teammates in advance of this Sunday’s matchup at Sports Authority Field at Mile High, Adams smiled.

“Absolutely, talking smack,” he said. “You have guys talking about they want tickets, they want this. I got them tickets though — in the nosebleeds.”

Bannan ‘Looking Forward to Winning’

Justin Bannan is back as a Bronco, and he couldn’t be happier.

“It feels great,” he said. “It’s good to get back out there. It’s weird, it’s kind of like déjà vu to be back out there on the practice field running around. I couldn’t be more excited and driven to have a great year.”

A 16-game starter for the Broncos in 2010, Bannan made 35 tackles along with one sack, four pass breakups and a forced fumble in orange and blue.

That season, however, the Broncos went 4-12. The following season, Bannan joined the St. Louis Rams. He made 32 tackles for the Rams in 15 games played with 14 starts in 2011. But St. Louis went 2-14.

After being accustomed to winning with the Baltimore Ravens for four seasons, the defensive tackle said he’s excited to rejoin a team that has high aspirations.

“I’m tired of losing — it’s been two tough years,” he said. “That’s the nature of the beast. It’s very frustrating. There aren’t many things worse than being on an NFL team that is losing. Last year we won two games. What that does to you mentally is just tough. I’m definitely looking forward to winning this year. Everything looks great on paper, but we have to get out there and work and get it done. We have a lot of work to do. I think everybody has their mind set the right way to come out and have a great year.”

Bannan Back with Broncos

April 11th, 2012 - 10:56am by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

The Broncos have signed defensive lineman Justin Bannan, the team announced on Wednesday.

Bannan, who played for Denver during the 2010 season, has totaled 303 tackles, 6.5 sacks, one interception, 10 passes defensed, four forced fumbles and one fumble recovery in 144 career appearances.

He has spent time with Buffalo (2002-05), Baltimore (2006-09), Denver (2010) and St. Louis (2011) after being selected in the fifth round of the 2002 draft by the Bills.

Bannan made 32 tackles last season for the Rams in 15 games played (14 starts). He has played at least 15 games in each of the past five seasons.

As a 16-game starter with the Broncos in 2010, Bannan made 35 tackles to go with one sack, four pass breakups and one forced fumble.

A four-year starter at the University of Colorado, Bannan finished his college career with 158 tackles and eight sacks, earning first-team All-Big 12 Conference honors as a senior.

That Winning Feeling

December 28th, 2010 - 10:05am by mike_riceOther posts by

I don’t care how it happened, against whom it happened or any of the circumstances around the fact that it happened.

I am simply glad the Broncos experienced that winning feeling again.

After five straight losses and nine losses in the ten previous games, the Broncos just needed to win a game. And they did. Let me take a moment to exhale.

Ahhhhh. Nice. It’s good to remember what a Broncos’ win feels like. I had nearly forgotten what a Broncos win felt like, even if at least some of the players had not.

Making a Stand

December 27th, 2010 - 2:32pm by Eric DetweilerOther posts by

In their last two fourth quarters coming into Sunday’s game against Houston, the Broncos had been outscored 40-13. Denver reversed that trend in a 24-23 win by coming up with the contest’s final 14 points to complete the comeback.

A day later, Interim Head Coach Eric Studesville pointed to his defense’s ability to get off the field with key third-down stops as one of the big factors in helping to complete the come-from-behind win.

Houston went just 1-for-8 on third-down conversion attempts in the game with quarterback Matt Schaub tossing an incompletion on the Texans’ only fourth-quarter attempt. That play forced the punt that led to Tim Tebow’s go-ahead touchdown run.

Home on the Road

October 6th, 2010 - 3:43pm by Gabe HiattOther posts by

Justin Bannan didn’t make the call to Baltimore. The friends he collected in the past four years as a Raven reached out to him before he could pick up the phone.

“Those guys have already called me,” Bannan said. “They’re funny, they’re good friends of mine and they’re friends I’ll have for the rest of my life.”

The Broncos bring Bannan back to M&T Bank Stadium — where he contributed to 23 wins as a Raven — for the first time since he signed with Denver in the offseason.

A Music City Challenge

September 30th, 2010 - 3:45pm by Eric DetweilerOther posts by

Justin Bannan’s most recent memory of the Titans’ LP Field was a happy one.

Two seasons ago, Bannan celebrated a road playoff win as his former squad, the Baltimore Ravens, used a last-minute Matt Stover field goal to advance to the AFC Championship game.

But most visitors have not been so fortunate.

The Titans have won nearly 65 percent of their 90 regular season home games since opening the stadium in 1999. Every game — preseason, regular season and playoff — has been sold out since the Titans moved in, creating one of the league’s top home field advantages.

“It’s a tough place to play,” Bannan said. “Obviously, we have to gear up for a 60-minute game, and I know we are. If we’re going to take it, it’s going to come down to the end.”

Early Impressions

August 24th, 2010 - 11:33pm by mike_riceOther posts by

One of the hardest things to do is to evaluate preseason football. Teams keep play calling pretty vanilla. They protect their front line players. There is little, if any, talk of winning the games.

Yet here we are, halfway through the preseason. The Broncos have lost to the Bengals and the Lions, with games against the Steelers and Vikings still to come. I am left with several impressions.

The Journey Begins

The journey that is the 2010 season has begun for the Denver Broncos.

It has started out as an interesting journey, to say the least. Undoubtedly, the Broncos did not expect the trailhead to be frought with adversity.

But so it is.

Cold and Rainy Minicamp

June 12th, 2010 - 11:44am by Eric DetweilerOther posts by

The calendar may say June 12, but the weather outside at Dove Valley had many thinking it was still early March. Rain, cold temperatures, dark skies and the occassional rumble of thunder marked the middle day of a mandatory three-day minicamp at Dove Valley.

As the practice opened in a steady rain, members of the equipment staff tried to keep the footballs dry by stuffing them inside their jackets. During the opening defensive drill stations, one of the exercises tested the players’ mettle in the messy conditions by forcing them to grab the slippery ball out of the air as if it was tipped or scoop fumbles off the slick grass.

Despite less than ideal conditions, the team still got in a full workout.
