Patrick Carter

On Thursday, the Broncos signed free agent wide receivers Patrick Carter and Britt Davis. They also placed Kenny McKinley (knee) and Josh Barrett (shoulder) on injured reserve, ending their seasons, while waiving Patrick Honeycutt.

In addition, defensive lineman Jamal Williams made his first appearance on the practice field in pads during training camp this afternoon. In a pre-practice media session, Head Coach Josh McDaniels said Williams, who had been on the active/PUP list, had passed a physical and was ready to go.

Both newcomers also joined the team for this afternoon’s practice session.

Barrett and Prater Kick Off Camp

May 26th, 2009 - 3:55pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

The team kicked off the first day of 11 days of passing camp on Tuesday, and Matt Prater and Josh Barrett spoke with the media afterward. Here are the highlights of their press sessions.

BARRETT

The second-year safety said this stretch of camps is a little different than the first two mini-camps. The main difference is it feels like they’re starting to be able to play football a little more smoothly instead of learning something new at every turn.

“It’s definitely a more comfortable stage to be in,” he said. “You’re picking up things a lot quicker, there’s not as much lag time between when you learn something and then when you’re able to apply it on the field. So having that, it’s helpful.”

But Barrett said there’s certainly still learning going on. For him and the other defensive backs in particular, some of that learning has come from Brian Dawkins.

“I just try to take in little things,” Barrett said. “You don’t even have to ask questions, but through his actions, through his demeanor you can pretty much pick up on a lot of stuff.”

One of the things the secondary is learning about is bringing a game-time work ethic to practice. Barrett said the defensive secondary talks every day about how unacceptable the number of takeaways was last year. Now they’re taking steps to make sure they force more turnovers and make more game-changing plays in 2009.

“We’ve got drills that are just for stripping the ball, just for working on what we call low-impact angles, where you’re not going to be the guy maybe to make the first hit, but you might be the first guy to be able to get a shot at the ball to get the ball loose,” he explained. “So certain things like that, aggressiveness like that is what we really need to work on.”

Prater’s talking points are after the jump.

Kern and Pittman: Super Ads

December 4th, 2008 - 10:52am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

The NFL has another ad promotion going for the Super Bowl, and this time it’s pitting teams against each other.

NFL Films came to Broncos training camp earlier this season to interview five different Broncos for the ad campaign — Anthony Alridge, Josh Barrett, Brett Kern, Michael Pittman and D.J. Williams. Each player told their own interesting story, and now Kern’s and Pittman’s stories are up for voting for the Broncos against the rest of the AFC.

Fans can vote on the 24 stories from the AFC here from December 4-17. One story from each division make it to the Championship Round where they compete against four NFC videos and one wild card.

The Championship Round runs from December 18 through January 4 — the day before the Super Bowl. Fans will have eighteen days to vote for their favorites with a Super Bowl appearance on the line.

So go ahead and get to voting for your Broncos stories. A quick snippet from Kern’s and Pittman’s stories after the jump.

Barrett Signed to Active Roster

November 22nd, 2008 - 2:13pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

On his 24th birthday, rookie Josh Barrett has been signed to the Broncos active roster.

Not a bad birthday present.

The safety spent the first 11 weeks of the season on the team’s practice squad. Selected by the team in the seventh round of the 2008 NFL Draft from Arizona State University, Barrett saw time in all four preseason games for Denver and ranked fourth on the club with 11 defensive tackles while adding two special-teams stops.

A two-year starter at Arizona State, Barrett played 47 career games with 27 starts for the Sun Devils and totaled 174 tackles, six interceptions, 17 pass breakups and four fumble recoveries. He received honorable mention All-Pac-10 honors as a junior in 2006.

To make room for the Barrett transaction, the team also waived running back Alex Haynes on Saturday.

Four Signed to Practice Squad

August 31st, 2008 - 3:34pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

On Sunday, the Broncos signed Josh Barrett, Mitch Erickson, Darrell Hackney and Steven Harris to their practice squad.

Barrett is a rookie from Arizona State University, a seventh-round pick in this year’s NFL Draft. He played in all four Denver preseason games in 2008, ranking fourth on the club in defensive tackles and tying for third in special-teams stops.

Erickson is an undrafted rookie out of South Dakota State University. He appeared in all four preseason games for Denver in 2008 following a collegiate career in which he received first-team All-America honors from the Associated Press as a senior at SDSU.

Hackney is a second-year quarterback out of the University of Alabama-Birmingham. He spent the final eight games of the 2007 season on the team’s active roster, and played in all four preseason games in 2008. He completed 24-of-38 passes for 285 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions, good for a 94.7 quarterback rating.

Harris is another second-year player who attended the University of Florida. Harris, who saw time in all four preseason contests for Denver in 2008, played four games for the Broncos in 2007 and totaled six tackles.

The Broncos may have up to eight players on their practice squad.

P.M. Blog: Day 12

August 6th, 2008 - 5:42pm by Adam ZinserOther posts by

Though the sun broke through for most of the afternoon practice, it was definitely much cooler than this morning’s session, and thankfully, the dark clouds heading this way held off just long enough for the team to wrap things up and head inside.

ATTENDANCE REPORT: Hamza Abdullah, Champ Bailey, Peyton Hillis, Chad Mustard, Tom Nalen and Dewayne Robertson all watched from the sidelines with their various injuries/soreness. Abdullah was doing some calisthenics with out on the field to help rehab his groin before practice began. One end of a large elastic band was wrapped around his waist with the other end tied to one of the goal posts. He high-stepped sideways until the band became fully extended and taught, then would move back towards the goal post.

Day Nine Blog

August 2nd, 2008 - 11:48am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

Well, it’s official. Brandon Marshall has started taking over training camp, and Saturday was certainly B. Marsh day. It’s only fitting that two receivers — Eddie Royal and Lorne Sam — opened up practice with a dancing breakdown, because the wide outs took care of business this morning in front of a crowd of 1,744 fans.

ATTENDANCE REPORT: Hamza Abdullah watched practice from the sidelines with a groin…Boss Bailey was out of pads with a right knee…Chad Mustard remained out of pads with a right hamstring…Tom Nalen sat out with a left knee…Montrae Holland continued watching practice from the sidelines after working out with Rich Tuten…Michael Pittman and Peyton Hillis were back in uniform this morning.

Spencer Larsen also missed practice — his wife is having a baby.

POSTURING FOR POSITION: Niko Koutouvides was handling the first unit Mike linebacker duties today. The second team safeties were Roderick Rogers and Josh Barrett, who had a big day on the field.

FOCAL POINTS: The offense ran through its “rally” offense a little early in practice, working on hurrying up to the line and spiking the ball. Rather than one-on-ones with DBs vs. WRs, the entire units lined up against each other for several drills. The team once again worked on its 4-minute drill during 11-on-11 drills. It was a big day for the field goal unit — more on that later.

P.M. Blog: Day 8

August 1st, 2008 - 5:30pm by Jake GrilleyOther posts by

It was another hot afternoon at Broncos training camp with the team holding its special teams session. The team spent the afternoon working on kickoffs. Here is a recap of the action.

ATTENDANCE REPORT: Being a special teams only practice, many of the Broncos not on special teams hit the weight room early and had finished their workouts as practice was getting underway. The Broncos special team regulars with the exception of Peyton Hillis, who is still listed as out of pads, suited up for practice.

POSTURING FOR POSITION: Anthony Alridge, Samie Parker, Glenn Martinez, Eddie Royal, Clifford Russell and Andre Hall made up the group of returners fielding the kickoffs.

A.M. Blog: Day 6

July 30th, 2008 - 10:52am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

This morning’s practice was once again highlighted by the defense. A day after the offense made some solid plays, the defense tightened up and made sure most of the action was on their side of the ball. There were still some offensive highlights, however. Here are some quick hits.

ATTENDANCE REPORT: John Lynch was excused from practice for personal reasons…Peyton Hillis remained out of pads with a left hamstring…Michael Pittman was out of pads with a left hamstring…Dewayne Robertson was out of pads with a left knee…Tom Nalen came out to practice with a jersey on but took it off before warmups, watching practice from the sidlines…Chad Mustard, on the PUP list, was out of pads with a right hamstring…Montrae Holland continued working with Strength and Conditioning Coach Rich Tuten to get to his playing weight.
