Lynch to Retire

November 14th, 2008 - 12:19pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by Gray Caldwell

After 15 seasons in the NFL, former Denver Broncos and Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety John Lynch is calling it a career.

The nine-time Pro Bowler will hold a retirement press conference from Tampa, Fla. on Monday at 1:00 p.m. MST.

In his 15 seasons with the Buccaneers (1993-2003) and Broncos (2004-07), Lynch racked up 1,277 tackles, intercepted 26 passes, grabbed 13 sacks, broke up 100 passes, forced 16 fumbles and built a well-deserved reputation as one of the most devastating hitters of his era.

Lynch was voted to the Pro Bowl all four years he spent in Denver, and he won a Super Bowl in Tampa Bay. His nine Pro Bowls are tied for second in NFL history for a safety. He left Denver after the first week of training camp this season.

“I felt like I owed it to him to look at his options, if it is football, if its retirement — whatever he wants to do because he has given me everything he could give in the four years he’ s been here,” Head Coach Mike Shanahan said at the time. “If the guy is not happy, doesn’t feel right — then I am going to give him the opportunity to do what feels right for his future.”

Lynch didn’t bring a Super Bowl to Denver, one of his main goals when he became a Bronco, but he certainly made the team better both on and off the field when he donned the orange and blue.

“When I came here I looked (Shanahan) in the eye and told him we were going to win and championship and we didn’t get that done,” Lynch said. “I am sorry for that, but I also looked him in the eye and told him I gave it everything I could in terms of trying to do that.”

DenverBroncos.com will have coverage of the press conference on Monday.

A.M. Blog: Day 7

July 31st, 2008 - 11:48am by Adam ZinserOther posts by Adam Zinser

After a short press conference with Head Coach Mike Shanahan, John Lynch officially announced that he is leaving the Broncos to explore other options. The Broncos granted his release.

I have always looked at Lynch as one of the class acts in the NFL. He has been one of my all-time favorite players for as long as I can remember following football. I wish that I could have worked with him more.

47, best of luck in all your future endeavors!

Now on to some of the meat from this morning’s practice.

ATTENDANCE REPORT: After participating in yesterday afternoon’s jog-through practice, Montrae Holland continued to work out on his own this morning. Tom Nalen continued to watch from the sidelines to rest his knee, but he kept his eyes on all the offensive line action. Michael Pittman donned his jersey, but was yet again out of pads. He stuck with the rest of the running backs, observing and giving pointers. Peyton Hillis and Chad Mustard both remained sidelined with their sore hamstrings. Also out of pads was Ebenezer Ekuban. He was on the field watching the action, but not participating.

POSTURING FOR POSITION: Wiegmann continued to work at center with Nalen out, and today he spoke with a couple reporters after practice.

“I’m getting reps in there with the starters, and the important thing is actually me getting used to them,” Wiegmann said. “I have been so used to my guys in Kansas City, so it’s just getting a feel for everybody here. That’s part of camp.”

Report: Lynch Staying

February 29th, 2008 - 7:17pm by AndrewOther posts by Andrew

The Denver Post reported Friday night that John Lynch will return to the Broncos for the 2008 season, which would be his fifth in Denver and 16th in the NFL.

Lynch has made the Pro Bowl in each of his four seasons in Denver and has been a team captain throughout his time in orange and blue.

Throughout the offseason, Lynch had discussed the need to take his time and be prudent in deciding whether to return, noting that this was the first juncture in his career in which he pondered the issue.

Discuss below …

No Decision Yet for Lynch

John Lynch

A larger-than-usual crowd was at John Lynch’s monthly ceremony to honor local student-athletes, but he knew that the increased turnout wasn’t for his “Salute the Stars” program.

“I’m sure you guys want some other information,” he said.

As it turned out, there was little new information to offer. Six days after being named an injury replacement to the AFC Pro Bowl roster, Lynch still has not finalized his plans for the 2008 season.

“I haven’t made that decision yet,” he said. “I’m not being evasive or anything; I’m just being true with you guys. I haven’t come to that time where I’ve made a decision yet.

“When I know, you guys will know.”

Bailey the Lone Pro Bowler

December 18th, 2007 - 2:15pm by AndrewOther posts by Andrew

Champ Bailey

Among the Broncos, only Champ Bailey found his name on the Pro Bowl roster, which was announced Tuesday afternoon at just after 2 p.m. MST.

For Bailey, it’s his eight consecutive Pro Bowl roster appearance and fourth as a Bronco, which gives him the third-longest streak of successive Pro Bowl nods in franchise annals, behind Steve Atwater and Shannon Sharpe.

Safety John Lynch saw his streak of three straight Pro Bowls snapped.

Wide receiver Brandon Marshall and defensive end Elvis Dumervil were also thought to be possible Pro Bowl selections, but did not see their names on the list. Marshall ranks fifth in the AFC and seventh in the NFL in receptions and receiving yardage, with 86 catches for 1,136 yards so far this season, including 21 receptions and a pair of 100-yard games in the last two weeks.

Monday Roundup: Graham, Gold, Team Mindframe and More

Shanahan and Cutler

After a three-day respite that represented a second bye weekend for all intents and purposes, the Broncos returned to the practice field Monday for a session that lasted just under an hour and was conducted without linebacker Ian Gold and tight end Daniel Graham, although both were in uniform alongside their teammates.

Head Coach Mike Shanahan offered similar prognoses for Gold and Graham, saying that “maybe” each would be able to return to the practice field this week. Gold suffered a knee injury in Thursday night’s loss at Houston, while Graham incurred a high ankle sprain, the same kind of injury that running back Andre Hall played through at Chicago on Nov. 25 before sitting out the loss at Oakland seven days later.

“Exactly when (Graham) will be able to practice, I’m not really sure,” Shanahan said.

Still Determined

December 4th, 2007 - 2:40pm by domonique_foxworthOther posts by domonique_foxworth

It’s been an eventful week. Most of the events were positive, but probably the most important event of the week is our game and that was definitely negative.

It’s been a really tumultuous season.  I guess “tumultuous” would be a good word to describe it thus far. Fortunately, we have four more games which is definitely a lot. Our playoff destiny is no longer 100 percent in our hands — which is difficult — but we still have a chance, so I think it’s important that we try to step up and sustain some consistency and shoot for the highest goal. I think that’s the only thing we can do and that’s the culture of this organization and of this city.

Henry Questionable But Not at Practice; Lynch Probable

November 16th, 2007 - 3:03pm by AndrewOther posts by Andrew

Travis Henry

As expected, Travis Henry was not at practice Friday, attending a hearing with the league in Phoenix regarding an appeal of a potential suspension. Head Coach Mike Shanahan noted after Friday’s practice that he did not know when the issue would be resolved.

“I don’t know if it will be the following week, two days later or nine days later,” he said.

As for Henry’s status for Monday night, that remains in the air. He is listed as questionable with the partially torn posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. He saw limited work in Thursday’s practice, but missed all of the work on Wednesday in addition to his Friday afternoon absence, leaving the decision on his status to be made closer to game time.
