Players Discuss QB Change

October 11th, 2011 - 5:39pm by Max HensonOther posts by

After receiving word that Tim Tebow would be taking over for Kyle Orton in Week 7 against the Dolphins, several Broncos shared their thoughts on the change and spoke about the unique traits Tebow brings to the quarterback position.

Here are a few quotes from inside the locker room:

WR Eric Decker on Tebow’s growth:
“With his progression over the last year-and-a-half, he’s just gotten more comfortable with the system. It’s a lot coming from college football to the NFL learning a new system with the speed that everybody has. He’s always had confidence, but getting the experience and getting the passes and just trusting himself and trusting his drops, trusting his throws and trusting the guys around him-that is something you learn as time goes on.”

Mays, Gronkowski to IR

December 6th, 2010 - 2:52pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

Two players who joined the Broncos in trades before the season are headed to the injured reserve.

After sustaining an ankle and knee injury, respectively, in Sunday’s loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, Dan Gronkowski and Joe Mays are out for the remainder of the season.

Gronkowski, who had eight catches for 65 yards this season, suffered his injury in the second quarter but toughed it out to return to the game.

“He’s just a tough (player),” Head Coach Josh McDaniels said. “He (injured) it and then he went back in and taped it again at halftime. I love his toughness and we have a great deal of respect for what he tried to do yesterday, because he did not want to come out of the game. As a coach, you appreciate that a lot.”

While Gronkowski did not reinjure the ankle, the initial injury was severe enough to end his season.

McDaniels also discussed the loss of Mays, who has stepped in as a starter at middle linebacker in five of the previous six games, accumulating 40 tackles and a pass defensed this season.

A Position of Strength

November 17th, 2010 - 4:46pm by Gabe HiattOther posts by

Last week against the Chiefs, the linebacker corps contributed four sacks, a forced fumble and a touchdown to the winning effort. On Wednesday, the unit potentially became even deeper.

For the first time in more than a month, Robert Ayers stepped onto the practice field. Before suffering a foot injury in Week 5 at Baltimore, the second-year linebacker had tallied 1.5 sacks and earned a game ball from Head Coach Josh McDaniels after the win at Tennessee for his run-stuffing performance against Chris Johnson.

McDaniels said the team will take their time evaluating Ayers as the week goes on.

Point of No Return

Explosive was the word of the week.

Since Monday, Head Coach Josh McDaniels and his players have talked about the physically gifted players that fill up the Raiders roster. On Friday, the talk turned to special teams.

“They’re the biggest team, the fastest team and the strongest team that you’re going to find in the NFL,” Joe Mays said. “It carries over to their special teams, no doubt.”

Broncos Trade for Mays

July 31st, 2010 - 4:07pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

The Broncos on Saturday acquired linebacker Joe Mays from the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for running back J.J. Arrington.

Mays, a third-year linebacker out of North Dakota State University, finished the 2009 season with 19 special teams tackles and a forced fumble. He was part of the rotation at middle linebacker for the Philadelphia Eagles, also contributing seven tackles on defense.

The former sixth-round pick made the first start of his career in a win against the Washington Redskins last season. He chipped in a career-high four tackles and four special teams stops against the Atlanta Falcons the following week.

Arrington, a fifth-year running back, spent the 2009 season out of football after being waived/injured by the Broncos prior to the start of training camp. He re-signed with the team at the start of free agency.
