Saccomano: Bringing the Running Game Back

August 2nd, 2011 - 2:27pm by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

When Head Coach John Fox met with the press on Sunday, his first session following the signing of running back Willis McGahee, he noted that he was of the opinion that you really need two backs for success in a running game.

More and more fans are coming to the realization that running backs take a terrific pounding, and the long National Football League season finds that teams which have fresh legs can have the greatest success in the backfield.

With that in mind, let’s look at the seasons in Denver history when the Broncos had their best rushing totals with tandem backs — and considering that the initial American Football League seasons were of 14 games, we’ll mostly include backs who reached the 500-yard milestone, either leading the team, or finishing second behind the Broncos’ leading rusher.

Remember When… Training Camp Progress

July 29th, 2011 - 9:16am by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

I remember when training camp was different from how it is conducted today.

With the Denver Broncos Thursday morning concluding their first training camp practice of 2011, all my seasons and all my camps put me in mind of the many changes in this aspect of professional football.

The late 1970’s are not exactly the Stone Age of modern society, but in terms of what has changed—and progressed–in the National Football League since then, there is a light year’s difference.

Now the collective bargaining agreement limits the number of practices, as well as the number of practices in full pads, and training staffs carefully look to the health and nutrition needs of the players.

In the hot summer weather, hydration is always critical.

So it might surprise some readers to learn that back in the late ‘70’s, water was not allowed on the field. There was no water intake during practice because it was not allowed. Old wives tales about cramping up due to too much water, as well as a prevailing culture of manly behavior, discouraged what any doctor would say is a basic.

The Broncos of those days would have practice stopped for a popsicle break, with coolers of popsicles brought out onto the practice field for a quick respite.

But that was it. You better get your hydration from that popsicle, because that is the extent of it.

Remember When… Karlis Makes the Club

July 19th, 2011 - 12:20pm by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

With what everyone hopes will be a return to football very soon, one of the elements that will happen fast and furiously will be the signing of new players.

No one knows how or when this will happen, just that it will be a one-of-a-kind occurrence when it does takes place.

And that put me in mind of an I-remember-when moment, that being back in May of 1982 when the Denver Broncos player personnel department cleaned out their files of resumes and letters sent by prospective players by inviting all of them—the entire player personnel file of unwanted, unrequested letters—to an open tryout camp.

In retrospect, I wonder if any pro football team has ever had a tryout camp of this size in the history of the game.

Four hundred seventy eight “players”—at least, in their minds they were players— showed up.

John Fox Right Coach at Right Time

January 14th, 2011 - 11:22am by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

This is a very exciting moment in Denver Broncos history as John Fox takes the reins as head coach of the iconic Rocky Mountain sports franchise.

There is no team comparable to the Broncos in our time zone, and as one draws closer to Denver it is like heading into the epicenter of an emotional tsunami, with the Broncos figuratively representing the state religion for legions of Broncos Country residents.

The Broncos have achieved legendary status over the past 51 years, albeit in a legendary low ebb at this very time.

But with every negative comes a positive, and in this case it just happened that John Fox was available to bring his experience, energy and focus to the Mile High City.

Elway Rises Fast in Social Media

As part of the head coaching search for the Denver Broncos the team is making regular announcements on social media site Twitter and making aggressive use of material on DenverBroncos.com as well.

Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway began his Twitter site last Wednesday after the announcement of his hire and has more than 28,000 followers as of this writing.

Elway’s Return a Great Moment

January 5th, 2011 - 10:06am by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

There are things that just seem meant to be, and so it is with the return of Denver Broncos Hall of Famer and legend, with the latter transcendent over the former term, to the team which he led into national dominance for 16 seasons.

He came to the Broncos as a great player and truly was one of those athletes who actually met and exceeded expectations. The mantle of greatness and the positive association with the Broncos, Bronco Nation and the entire Rocky Mountain time zone can never be taken away from John Elway.

As the team moves into a new era it is completely fitting that John head the football operations of this franchise.

No one has been more vital, and no one has ever been more competitive.

By the Numbers: 11

January 2nd, 2011 - 11:32am by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

I thought it might be fun to have a series of blogs (and, since it’s my blog, whatever I think might be fun seems pretty likely to find its way into print) on Broncos by the numbers.

The team has just completed 50 years of play, a milestone in any franchise history, and over that time a lot of players have made contributions, large and small, to what the Broncos are. It’s like family members, some more accomplished than others but when you are in a family, you are in for keeps. So too for the Broncos. Once a Broncos, always a Bronco.

Those players have worn a lot of numbers over the years, and we are going to take a look, over time, at various uniform numbers.

Game day against the San Diego Chargers might seem like an odd time to do a by the numbers, but it is actually tied to the college bowl season.

I am writing this in a sort of stream of consciousness technique, and if you feel like following along, great. If not, I truly understand. I love writing things about Broncos, things that fans and press today might not know, but that some might appreciate reading about.

The Number we are doing today is 11. It is labeled most recently as that worn by the tragic figure Kenny McKinley.

TD HOF

December 30th, 2010 - 10:53am by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

That headline seems like some confusing code, but I’ll bet it makes quick sense to Denver Broncos fans.

This week the Pro Football Hall of Fame voters made their choices in bringing the list of 25 names down to the roughly 15 who will be considered for induction in 2011.

The Hall has not yet announced that list, so we cannot be sure if both Shannon Sharpe and Terrell Davis are on it, or not. The common logic is that Sharpe not only will make the list of finalists, but that this will possibly be the year when Shannon breaks through and makes the Hall. It should be. He retired as the all time tight end leader in catches, yards, touchdowns, Super Bowl victories, and Pro Bowls.

Shannon Sharpe is a Hall of Fame cinch, hopefully this year.

But it is way too easy for the national press to underrate the performance of Terrell Davis.

Another Start, More Records

It has been awhile since Broncos Country has this much electricity running through it based on the play and potential of one single player.

But the power plant fueling Broncos fandom is on overload today due to the play, potential, charisma and electricity of quarterback Tim Tebow (journalistically, it is appropriate to state his position before his name in a story’s first reference, but I do not think there is a fan in America who does not know Tebow is a quarterback).

I shall leave it to others to argue and debate the growth and development which his potential will reach; as I said last week, no one can predict the future.

Tebow Made Big First Impression

December 20th, 2010 - 1:28pm by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

Tim Tebow’s first start as the Denver Broncos quarterback came Sunday at Oakland, and it has been discussed, praised, questioned, debated for so long in advance of that start that you sometimes wonder what is left to say.

Only the future will tell us what it holds. You cannot predict it or rush it.

You can, however, prepare for it, and Tebow has worked very hard all year doing just that.
