Wednesday Notes: Back to Business

October 29th, 2008 - 4:16pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by Gray Caldwell

The Broncos got back to the grindstone Wednesday, preparing for their next opponent, and it’s one that will provide some unique challenges.

The Miami Dolphins come to INVESCO Field at Mile High this week, and coming off of two losses before the bye week, the Broncos are getting ready for a battle to get back on the winning track.

There are several interesting storylines leading up to the game, not the least of which involves two prominent figures from the 2009 NFL Draft.

ROOKIES LIVING UP TO BILLING

Sunday’s game features a first-round 2009 NFL Draft pick at left tackle for both teams’ offensive line, and both rookies have started every game for their team this season.

Quarterback Stays Busy with Controlled Schedule

October 28th, 2008 - 2:08pm by jim_saccomanoOther posts by jim_saccomano

Recently some members of the Denver press wondered how much press quarterback Jay Cutler does on a weekly basis.

In addition to being a tremendous young quarterback, Jay Cutler is the most popular Bronco in terms of press requests, so the key is to manage and coordinate his time in this regard.

As you can imagine, this is very unpopular to members of the press, because their desire, in a perfect media world, is whatever access they desire, whenever they desire it.

But at the same time they are aware (sort of) of how busy someone like Jay Cutler is. At the end of the day, and at the start of the day, every day, it’s football, football and football.

And what we do, what we ask, has to be controlled so that the player can concentrate on that part of his job that is the one for which he was hired.

Boss Bailey Out For Season; Injury Updates

October 22nd, 2008 - 12:00pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by Gray Caldwell

Head Coach Mike Shanahan spoke at the podium after practice Wednesday, and he updated the media on the status of several injured Broncos.

Boss Bailey will have microfracture surgery in about a week, ending his season.

His brother, Champ Bailey will be out four-to-six weeks with a groin injury he suffered in the first half of the team’s Monday Night Football contest.

“Champ is a quick healer, but he does have a severe injury, and I think it will be a month for sure,” Shanahan said. “But we’ll just have to wait and see.”

Patrick Ramsey re-injured his elbow in the game against New England, and will be placed on the Reserve/Injured list.

“He kind of hurt that in preseason,” Shanahan said. “I’m not sure if he fully recovered or not because he didn’t take a significant blow, but it was obviously enough that he’s on IR. It’s a setback, but (Darrell) Hackney will come up and get the job done.”

Disregarding Records

October 8th, 2008 - 3:45pm by Jake GrilleyOther posts by Jake Grilley

The Broncos have the Jacksonville Jaguars on tap for this weekend. The Jags come to Denver with a 2-3 record on the season but the Broncos know that Jacksonville has played all five of its opponents close this season. Denver realizes that it is up against a talented football team, regardless of what its record may be coming in.

“The average fan looks at them and they see a 2-3 record and they don’t see the football team,” Head Coach Mike Shanahan said. “That’s usually indicative of most people. You are looking at the record and not how they have been playing. Our football team is well aware of that and we will be ready to play.”

Toughness on Display

October 5th, 2008 - 8:47pm by mike_riceOther posts by mike_rice

Sometimes you just have to put your foot down. The Broncos did that in Sunday’s 16-13 win over the Buccaneers.

Don’t get me wrong. I love watching shootouts. But there is something to be said for winning a defensive struggle. The Broncos showed they could do that.

I won’t pretend the Buccaneers have an elite offense. The fact remains, however, that they were averaging 350.2 yards per game entering Sunday’s game. They had only 307 against the Broncos.

They were also averaging 22.8 points per game before Sunday. They had just over half that against the Broncos.

The Bucs had allowed just four sacks in the first four games and none in the two games leading up to Sunday’s contest against the Broncos. Denver had three sacks in the 16-13 win.

For as much as the Broncos’ defense struggled early in the season, it toughened up against the Buccaneers. In seven of their 11 possessions, the Buccaneers had the ball for under 2:30. Only four of their possessions netted 37 yards or more. The other seven drives netted nine yards or fewer.

Broncos vs. Buccaneers: Pregame Notes

October 5th, 2008 - 11:55am by Adam ZinserOther posts by Adam Zinser

12:00 p.m. MDT: A few days ago, the forecast showed lots of rain for today.

Thankfully, that is not the case.

It’s extremely clear out — on the drive to the stadium, I could see the mountains more clearly than I could for the past couple months.

Down on the field, Darrell Hackney is throwing a round a little bit while the CU Buffoons practice singing the national anthem.

At one end of the field, Mitch Erickson, Dylan Gandy and Erik Pears are throwing the football around. They have been trying to hit the crossbar from 25 yards out, and not too long ago, Pears nailed it.

Well, I’ll be heading down onto the field with Jake Grilley to snap some pictures here in a little bit once more players start warming up.

A Fight For 4-1

October 1st, 2008 - 7:40pm by Jake GrilleyOther posts by Jake Grilley

The Broncos are entering this weekend’s game against Tampa Bay 3-1, fresh off the team’s first loss of the season. The Buccaneers are also 3-1, but Tampa has put together three straight wins following the team’s opening weekend loss against New Orleans. Both teams have taken different routes to get where they are a quarter through the NFL season, but to each team Sunday’s showdown is critical in keeping their productive starts going.

Denver will attempt to rebound and collect some of its early season momentum while Tampa will try and keep its winning steak alive. Regardless of what each team has done up to this point, both know a 4-1 start is better than a 3-2 one.

Jay Cutler said every game comes down to preparation and execution.

“It is a chess match,” Cutler said. “Each and every game is and all season long is about how you can arrange, adjust and tweak things.”

Cutler AFC Offensive Player of the Month

October 1st, 2008 - 3:52pm by Adam ZinserOther posts by Adam Zinser

Jay Cutler will be named AFC Offensive Player of the Month for September, the NFL announced Wednesday.

Cutler’s selection as AFC Offensive Player of the Month is the first such award of his three-year career. It marks the first time in seven seasons that a Bronco has received AFC Offensive Player of the Month with quarterback Brian Griese earning that honor for his performance in September of 2001.

Still Not Satisfied

September 25th, 2008 - 4:31pm by Jake GrilleyOther posts by Jake Grilley

The Broncos offense has put up some stellar numbers in the team’s first three games of the season. The offense has thrown for eight touchdowns, rushed for five more and has averaged 432 total yards.

Two of those touchdown passes have been caught by Brandon Marshall the league leader in receptions among wide receivers. Marshall is also first in the NFL with 160.5 yards receiving per contest.

“That is what I work hard for,” Marshall said about his numbers so far this season. ”I want to be the guy not just in a single game but throughout my whole career. That is what we work hard for, and all we can do is continue to push and remember that every Sunday could be any given Sunday in this league.”

Wins Elusive at Arrowhead

September 24th, 2008 - 7:47pm by Jake GrilleyOther posts by Jake Grilley

The Broncos are off to a sizzling 3-0 start while division rival Kansas City has stumbled out of the gates with a vastly contrasting 0-3 start to its season.

But don’t think the Broncos are overlooking this weekend’s matchup against the Chiefs, they would be foolish to do so. Not only is K.C. one of Denver’s most bitter rivals but also Sunday’s game will be played at Arrowhead Stadium, historically a notoriously hard place for the Broncos to come away victorious.
