Young, Walker Questionable; Henry Ruled Out

November 23rd, 2007 - 3:06pm by AndrewOther posts by

Selvin Young

As snow flurries fell upon Dove Valley throughout the Broncos’ 90-minute practice on Friday, running back Selvin Young saw his first on-field of the week after suffering a knee strain against the Tennessee Titans.

But Young’s work was limited, as was the case for fullback Paul Smith, who also returned to the field after missing the previous two days, leaving both questionable for Sunday’s game in Chicago.

“We’ll get a chance to work them out before the game and we’ll see where we’re at there,” Head Coach Mike Shanahan said.

There is no such uncertainty regarding running back Travis Henry, who missed Friday’s practice and was ruled out for Sunday’s game.

“Travis is definitely out,” Shanahan said.

Henry has been in recovery from a partially torn posterior cruciate ligament, but on Friday a touch of the flu was added to his list of infirmities.

“I think he’ll be able to go again next week,” Shanahan said.

Wide receiver Javon Walker practiced Friday, but was limited for the first time this week. Even though there was some swelling in the surgically repaired right knee following the Thursday practice, he expects to play Sunday, although his status is questionable.

“Unless there’s any setback there, he should be able to play,” Shanahan said.

Walker: Full Practice; ‘Should Be Ready’ for Bears

Javon Walker

In many ways, it is as though the Broncos are at the cusp of a new season, since they hold a share of first place in the AFC West after coming from two games below .500 to get back to all square at 5-5.

The same is true for Javon Walker, who not only returned to practice Wednesday for the first time since Oct. 17, but went through a full afternoon of work in his initial session following knee surgery 33 days ago.

“It’s like coming in the first day to start workouts again,” Walker said. “Obviously I’m very excited to come back at a time like this where we’re tied for first.”

Walker in Uniform; Henry, Young Sidelined

November 21st, 2007 - 2:08pm by AndrewOther posts by

We’ll find out after practice ends this afternoon just how much Javon Walker was able to do, but he was back in a practice jersey Wednesday for the first time since undergoing knee surgery on Oct. 19.

Walker’s last practice work came on Oct. 17, when he was limited in a Wednesday afternoon session prior to the win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. The wide receiver spent the following three weeks recuperating from the procedure on his right knee, and then did some light work prior to last week’s practice sessions, running some routes and catching passes in the warmup period before retreating to the sidelines in sweats.

Light Work Before Practice for Walker

Javon Walker

Javon Walker wasn’t in uniform, and he wasn’t going through the paces of practice with his teammates. But his presence in pre-practice warmups — limited as he was to lightly running routes and catching passes — nevertheless provided the first tangible, public evidence of his recovery from the knee surgery he underwent on Oct. 19 in Houston.

“It felt good just to run around and catch some balls,” Walker said. “Every day will be just another step to being game-ready.”

That, however, might be a little while in coming. Head Coach Mike Shanahan acknowledged Monday that it was “probably a long shot” for Walker to return by Monday night.

Bailey Questionable for Sunday

October 19th, 2007 - 2:16pm by AndrewOther posts by

Twelve days after suffering a strained quadriceps muscle against San Diego, cornerback Champ Bailey was back on the practice field at Dove Valley on Friday afternoon, but was limited in his on-field work and is listed as questionable for Sunday night’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

“Just a little individual drills, a couple of periods,” Bailey said. “I didn’t want to push it too much, because one thing about muscle strains — you can set yourself back, and I don’t want to do that.”

Bailey said that if the game were today he would “probably make myself go,” but acknowledged that the quad injury may preclude that.

“If I feel like I can go 100 percent I will definitely go out there,” he said. “I’ve got to take care of my body one way or another, but one thing I do want to do is be accountable and I want to be out there if I can. But I’ve got to be honest with myself and my health. I can’t just go out there and risk making it worse than what it is.”

Added Head Coach Mike Shanahan: “He’s a pro and he’s been doing this for a while and will know if he can or can’t play. Champ is pretty direct. He’s a very tough player. Obviously we’d like to help our football team win, but he knows if he’s injured or not. We’ll find that out before the game.”

Wide receiver Javon Walker also underwent his knee surgery Friday morning in Houston.

“It went well,” Shanahan said. “How long is it going to be, I really don’t know. The doctor that operated on him estimated it at six weeks, so we’ll get a better feel probably in the next week or so.”

Defensive tackle Antwon Burton and running back Paul Smith were added to the injury report; both fully participated in Friday’s practice. Burton has a back problem and is listed as probable, while a neck injury has Smith listed as questionable.

Walker Out ‘A Few Weeks’

October 18th, 2007 - 3:54pm by AndrewOther posts by

The day-by-day wait for Javon Walker’s return from knee inflammation just got much longer.

Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced after Thursday’s practice that the sixth-year wide receiver would undergo an operation on his knee Friday. The procedure is “more of a cleanout,” Shanahan said, but it will necessitate Walker being sidelined for “a few weeks.”

The procedure will take place in Houston.

“Javon is not feeling very good,” Shanahan said. “How quickly he comes back, I’m not really sure. It’s more of a cleanout — the same knee he had the operation on.

“(The) doctors don’t think it’s very serious, but it’s serious enough to go in there and clean it out because he’s been off of it for a few weeks and it hasn’t gotten much better. Monday he practiced full speed and it looked like he was going to come back ready to go, and yesterday he was limited and you guys know the rest.”

Walker had remained in Denver during the bye weekend to work on rehabilitating the knee, which became inflamed and filled with fluid late last month. The pain in the knee — which he said was not related to the anterior-cruciate-ligament surgery he underwent in 2005 — forced him to the sidelines during the losses to Indianapolis and San Diego just before the bye.

Walker had reconciled himself to the constancy of pain in the knee for the rest of the regular season, and practiced Monday with no unexpected side effects from the work — even 24 hours later, when further pain often sets in.

“Tuesday was alright,” he said Wednesday. “You’ve still got the achy feeling and everything’s not going to be 100 percent.

“I really don’t notice it until everything is done and it’s time to calm down. But usually when I’m out there in the midst of playing, I don’t even notice it.”

Wednesday afternoon, however, Walker was limited, and by Thursday, he was not in uniform with his teammates as they went to work.

“It always hurts when you lose a player of Javon’s ability, but we’ve got a number of guys that we’ve got confidence in. We expect them to step up and get the job done.”

On the other side of the line of scrimmage, Champ Bailey also sat out Thursday’s practice. When asked whether he would play, he was noncommittal, saying, “I don’t know,” while adding that he would discuss his status more on Friday.

“(Bailey) said he felt a little bit better than yesterday,” Shanahan said. “Hopefully he feels better tomorrow and he can practice.”

Meanwhile, safety Hamza Abdullah was listed as having limited participation after going through the full practice on Wednesday. He has missed three straight games with a hip injury.

Walker Limited; Bailey Sidelined

For two key Broncos recovering from injuries, their status was quo on Wednesday afternoon as the Broncos returned to the practice field. Javon Walker was in uniform and saw limited work during the session, while Champ Bailey joined Sam Adams on the sidelines. Adams has sat out Wednesday sessions throughout the year to date.

“(Bailey) had some treatment and got in a little workout in the weight room,” Head Coach Mike Shanahan said. “We’ll know more tomorrow on Champ.”

A specific prognosis for whether Bailey will play against the Steelers will arrive Friday. For now, the Broncos and Bailey will simply wait.

“We’ll see,” Shanahan said. “You’re always hoping that (quadriceps muscle) comes around, but you’re never sure.”

Walker, meanwhile, “practiced some,” Shanahan said, but the wideout was confident that he would be ready to play Sunday.

“When the game comes around, with the adrenaline rush and what’s happening on Sundays, you feel 100 percent,” Walker said. “That’s the way I would feel going into every Sunday. It’s just the things that you have to prepare for up until that day that makes it tough. Sundays will take care of themselves.”

Walker said he didn’t detect much pain when he ran during Monday’s practice.

“I really don’t notice it until everything is done and it’s time to calm down,” Walker said. “But usually when I’m out there in the midst of playing, I don’t even notice it.

“We’ve just got to kind of watch it and figure out what day would be a good day to rest it and get it ready for Sunday.”

MORE FROM PRACTICE: Tight end Stephen Alexander was listed as having limited participation in practice with his lingering calf injury … Hamza Abdullah also fully participated in practice for the first time since injuring his hip last month … Tuesday signee Jordan Beck wore jersey No. 57 and said as he left the field that he worked at middle linebacker during Wednesday’s session. “He’s so bright that eventually he’ll be able to learn all three (linebacker spots),” assistant head coach/defense Jim Bates said.

FROM PITTSBURGH: Defensive tackle Casey Hampton (hamstring) and tight end Jerame Tuman (back) did not take part in Wednesday’s practice … Cornerback Bryant McFadden was limited Wednesday with an ankle injury.

Bailey Sits Out; Walker Practices; Thoughts on Rockies

October 15th, 2007 - 6:21pm by AndrewOther posts by

For all but one Bronco on the 53-man roster, the team’s practice late Monday afternoon was a chance to get back to work. For Champ Bailey, however, the wait-out for his left quadriceps injury continues.

“I’m not where I want to be,” Bailey said after sitting out Monday’s session. “But with a couple of more sessions of treatment and working out, I’ll be well by Sunday.”

Even though his injury is the dreaded muscle strain, Bailey nevertheless seemed fairly confident that his recovery would not be protracted.

“When you strain a muscle, you’re always kind of concerned about it because you don’t know how it’s going to heal, but right now I feel pretty good and my progress has been good,” he said.

Bailey’s sights are set on practicing Wednesday, when the Broncos’ preparation for the Pittsburgh Steelers accelerates into fifth gear after the requisite Tuesday off-day.

“I’m always pushing for Wednesday. I was actually pushing for today, but that didn’t happen,” Bailey said.

Promising news came in the form of wide receiver Javon Walker’s participation in the 90-minute session.

“He got some reps in,” Head Coach Mike Shanahan said. “Hopefully there’s no setback and he’s ready to practice on Wednesday. He did some good things today.”

Walker believes he will be able to play on Sunday, but after remaining in Colorado for the bye weekend to work on the inflamed knee, he has reconciled himself to the fact that it will remain problematic for the weeks and months to follow.

“It’s just an injury where it (takes) time and you don’t really get time (to rehabilitate) until the season’s overwith, so I’ve got to stay on top of it during the week,” he said.

“I’m ready to go … It’s getting there. It’s football, so it’s never going to be 100 percent, but I can get it monitored during the week of practice.”

The urgency of the Broncos’ situation — a three-game losing streak, opponents that are a combined 9-2 looming in the next two weeks — helped spur Walker’s decision to play through the pain.

“It’s a time where we need everybody out there. Pittsburgh is a good team, and we want to at least try to go in with a full arsenal of players,” Walker said.

Besides injuries, there was one other primary topic of conversation … the Colorado Rockies and their amazing run, now at 20-1 as they stand at the cusp of a four-game sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks in the National League Championship Series.

A few thoughts:

John Lynch: “Ever since I’ve been here, this is a Broncos town, but I think it’s great. I think there’s enough love to go around for anyone. They’ve certainly earned the right to have this town and this state right now. It’s special and I think it’s inspirational for everyone, and I think we can look at that. … Most of all, we’re just pulling for those guys.”

Bailey: “I’ve got to get some tickets. I’m definitely on the bandwagon. I hope they win it.”

Walker: “I probably will watch it. I haven’t been keeping up with it just because I’ve been focused on what I’ve got to do, but the closer and closer they get, this is where it becomes exciting. So I will watch the game tonight and see if they can clinch it.”

Shanahan, who referred to the Rockies as “we” on one occasion during his post-practice question-and-answer session, said he couldn’t quite compare the hoopla over the Rockies’ run to the one that accompanied his team’s deep postseason forays in 1997, 1998 and 2005 because he was locked in on the task at hand.

“I think it’s probably more exciting looking from the outside in than the inside out, because you can see guys taking it game by game and really focusing on the job at hand and not getting caught up in the hoopla, but concentrating on the job,” Shanahan said. “It’s been fun to watch.”

And, of course, our little blog will be there tonight. I missed last night’s game while en route to Denver International Airport, and happened to be rolling past Coors Field on Interstate 25 when Yorvit Torrealba launched his sixth-inning rocket into the left-field seats. “That’s all they’ll need,” I told my mother as she called seconds after the ball landed in the bleachered delirium, and blessedly for the Rockies, that turned out to be the case.

So onward to Coors Field, to grapple with the crowds, to keep score, to guzzle some hot chocolate and to ensure myself a lengthy night with little sleep. As my longtime friend Sam Wolfson — who is attending tonight’s game with me — said, “That’s what Mountain Dew is for.” Amen.

We’ll return you to your regularly-scheduled Broncos blog programming later. Until the next entry — and what is sure to be an intriguing and pithy question-and-answer post coming tomorrow — vaya con Dios.

Thursday Injury Notes: Walker Still Out

October 4th, 2007 - 5:45pm by AndrewOther posts by

For a second consecutive day, neither Travis Henry nor Javon Walker practiced as they Broncos continued their preparation for Sunday’s game against the San Diego Chargers.

There was good news for the Broncos as several players went from limited participation in Wednesday’s session to full participation Thursday — running back Mike Bell, kicker Jason Elam, offensive tackle Ryan Harris, safety John Lynch and wide receiver Brandon Stokley.

Fullback Paul Smith, on the other hand, did not take part on Thursday as he grapples with a neck problem; he saw limited action Wednesday. Tight end Stephen Alexander (calf) and defensive end John Engelberger (shoulder) each saw limited work both Wednesday and Thursday.

Defensive tackle Sam Adams returned to practice Thursday after sitting out Wednesday’s session, as is custom this year.

In San Diego, a slew of players did not practice Thursday: wide receiver Eric Parker, fullback Andrew Pinnock, wide receiver Buster Davis, defensive tackle Jamal Williams, cornerback Antonio Cromartie, tight end Antonio Gates and linebacker Carlos Polk.

Walker, Lynch Inactive for Game

September 30th, 2007 - 1:09pm by AndrewOther posts by

Neither Javon Walker nor John Lynch will play for the Broncos today.

Both were listed among the Broncos’ eight game-day inactives, which were announced before the balance of the team took the field for warmups in the RCA Dome.

Joining Walker and Lynch in sweats will be safety Hamza Abdullah and running back/fullback Mike Bell — each of whom was ruled out during the week — and four others: offensive tackle Ryan Harris, tight end Stephen Alexander and defensive tackles Amon Gordon and Sam Adams.

Both Gordon and Adams had practiced throughout the week, with Adams only missing Wednesday’s session, as has been the normal throughout the season. They were listed as the first-team tackles, with Alvin McKinley and Marcus Thomas shown as the backups. Should Thomas open the game on the field, it would mark the first NFL start for the rookie.

The moves also mean that running back Andre Hall and defensive end Tim Crowder will make their NFL debuts, while wide receiver Glenn Martinez — promoted to the 53-man roster on Saturday from the practice squad — will make his Broncos debut.
