The Final Touches

December 26th, 2008 - 3:30pm by Adam ZinserOther posts by

The day after Christmas started cold and rainy, but it cleared up and warmed up for the Broncos to practice and put the final touches on their preparation for the trip to San Diego.

A NEW TOP RIVALRY?

With the intensity heating up between the Broncos and Chargers, it’s fair to ask if this rivalry has become the biggest one for the Broncos, jumping ahead of the long-lasting rivalry with the Raiders.

Head Coach Mike Shanahan was asked that question after Friday’s practice.

“I think so,” Shanahan said. “I think any time a team is playing well and they’ve won the division a couple years, I think there’s always that anticipation about playing a good team, especially at their place for all the marbles. Obviously a lot goes into it.”

Jamie Winborn weighed in on that as well, saying that all the heat has definitely been turned up on Broncos-Chargers games.

But no matter how intense the rivalry may be, it all comes down to how they play on the field, and when they take the field Sunday, the end result will send the winner to the playoffs.

“They were a good team when we beat them the first time, they’ll be a good team this time also. They’re the same team, man, we’re the same team – it’s all about who plays the best on that day. We just know we’ve got a job ahead of us,” Winborn said. “But we’ve been focused this week and we’re ready to play.”

Injuries Dominate Conversation in Broncos Locker Room

November 3rd, 2008 - 6:44pm by Jake GrilleyOther posts by

Injury news was running rampant in the Broncos locker room on Monday and players were quick to chime in on what this latest rash of injuries means to the Broncos season.

Hall/ Pittman Done for ’08
The biggest news of the day was the announcement that running backs Andre Hall and Michael Pittman had been placed on the team’s effectively ending their season.

One player that will have to step up in the absence of Hall and Pittman will be running back Ryan Torain who saw his first action as a Bronco against Miami on Sunday.

“It is a rough sport; injuries come and go,” he said. “You just have to stay focused and handle the adversity when it comes.”

Smiles All Around

October 31st, 2008 - 2:57pm by Adam ZinserOther posts by

It’s Friday, so the players didn’t waste any time getting out of Dove Valley to enjoy the weekend before Sunday’s game, but here are some quick notes from the day’s events.

#88 Getting Close: Tony Scheffler was heading out, but some members of the media managed to snag the tight end before he snuck out of the locker room.

“I am feeling a lot better, and it is one of those things when you get a tear in there and you just try and rehab it each day,” Scheffler said. “It is up to the coaches. Obviously I went through practice each day – doing a little bit more each day – and hopefully I can be get out there on Sunday. We have a short week going into next week so it would be good to get out there this weekend.”

He was definitely in a pretty light mood. Before answering the question, he was joking around with CBS4′s Gary Miller, imitating him and predicting the questions he would ask.

Hackney’s Set: With Patrick Ramsey on IR, Darrell Hackney has been preparing to be Jay Cutler’s backup, should the team elect to elevate him from the practice squad to the active roster before Sunday’s game.

“I prepare every week as if I’m going to start the game,” Hackney said. “Now, my role is to be Jay’s backup instead of Patrick Ramsey’s backup. I’m just excited about the opportunity to go out and have a chance to play in a regular season game. Jay and Patrick have helped me. It’s just an unfortunate situation when someone goes down, but I’m in that situation.”

Look Added to Defensive Arsenal, Starting Strong

September 22nd, 2008 - 4:19pm by Jake GrilleyOther posts by

The Broncos showed their defensive flexibility during Sunday’s win against New Orleans. At times Denver mixed things up by implementing a 3-4 defensive scheme instead of the team’s traditional 4-3 formation.

The team’s four linebacker alignment allowed them to utilize different defensive groupings allowing Jamie Winborn to join Boss Bailey, D.J. Williams and Nate Webster as a member of the linebacking corps. With so much talent on the defense, Williams said switching between schemes lets more of that talent see action.

Cowboys at Camp: Final Practice

August 14th, 2008 - 6:52pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

The Broncos and Cowboys closed out their joint practices Thursday afternoon with some 11-on-11 team drills between the offenses and defenses, and a little special teams in between. After a morning that featured a bit of a scuffle, the afternoon session was filled with nothing but good, clean football — and the occasional offensive fireworks — as Broncos President and CEO Pat Bowlen and Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones stood and watched practice side-by-side.

ATTENDANCE REPORT: The Broncos who were out of pads for the morning session also were for the afternoon session…In addition, the usual pack of veterans did not participate in the practice, including Dre’ Bly, Dewayne Robertson, Brandon Stokley and Darrell Jackson.

POSTURING FOR POSITION: Michael Pittman — who celebrated his birthday today — was the running back in the lineup on most situational third-downs.

MATCHUPS: For the final session of their joint practice, the Cowboys and Broncos went into 11-on-11 team matchups right after their individual team drills. Here are the details.

Cowboys at Camp: Day 1, PM

August 13th, 2008 - 6:47pm by Adam ZinserOther posts by

The Broncos and Cowboys got back to it this afternoon, kicking off the second practice at around 4:30. At an hour and a half long, the afternoon session was a little shorter than the morning one, and after individual team drills, the two teams came together for two 11-on-11 periods with a special teams segment wedged in between.

ATTENDANCE REPORT: In addition to the players out of pads during the morning session, a number of Broncos veterans got their normal afternoon off. Ebenezer Ekuban, Darrell Jackson, Dewayne Robertson, Brandon Stokley and Casey Wiegmann joined their injured teammates on the sidelines.

POSTURING FOR POSITION: The lineups were the same for the most part, but with both Nalen and Wiegmann out, P.J. Alexander and Kory Lichtensteiger rotated at the center position. Kenny Peterson worked with the starting defense in the place of Robertson.

MATCHUPS: As with this morning, each field had a different set of drills, so we combined “Focal Points” and “Key Plays” into one category. Here is the breakdown of how each competition went down.

Cowboys at Camp: Day 1, A.M.

August 13th, 2008 - 12:00pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

The ‘Boys were back in town Wednesday afternoon, and their offseason media circus came with them. There were easily double the reporters and photographers on the sidelines, many of which were from the HBO training camp documentary: Hard Knocks. Recently-retired Rod Smith even showed up to take in the action from the sidelines. Still, with all that attention focusing on the fields, the players went out and put together a productive and exciting practice.

The teams started out with their regular routines, Cowboys on one field and Broncos on the other — stretching, warming up and working on individual drills. Then the Broncos offense went to one field and the defense to the other, and the fun really started.

ATTENDANCE REPORT: Hamza Abdullah was back in pads this morning…Boss and Champ Bailey were out of pads with a right ankle and right hamstring, respectively…Louis Green was out of pads with a concussion/neck injury…Tom Nalen remained out of pads with a left knee…Erik Pears was out of pads with a sore back…Ryan Torain watched from a chair on the far sideline recovering from surgery on his left elbow.

POSTURING FOR POSITION: Niko Koutouvides took his reps with the first unit linebackers during practice, with Jamie Winborn and D.J. Williams on either side…The second unit linebackers consisted of Jordan Beck, Nate Webster and Wesley Woodyard…Abdullah, in his first day back at practice since Aug. 1, ran with the second team safeties beside Roderick Rogers.

MATCHUPS: Each field had a different set of drills, so we, the bloggers, decided to combine “Focal Points” and “Key Plays” into one category. So here is the breakdown of how each competition went down.

Two-Year Extension for Winborn

December 12th, 2007 - 6:15pm by AndrewOther posts by

In the past five days, the Broncos have rewarded two of their most pleasant surprises this year.

Last weekend, it was Brandon Stokley, whose ability to help step in as a starting wide receiver after spending most of his career as a No. 3 slot wideout helped him earn a three-year extension. Wednesday, it was linebacker Jamie Winborn, who signed a two-year contract extension just two months after joining the team three months and a day ago, after the regular-season opener at Buffalo.

Winborn is the Broncos’ leader in special-teams tackles this year, with 10 total stops — nine solo and one assist. He’s also added five solo stops, an assist and a pass breakup in limited action on defense.

Winborn Joins Ex-Bucs Enclave

September 11th, 2007 - 7:32pm by AndrewOther posts by

As I quickly wrote the main site story on the signing of Jamie Winborn, I calculated the number of ex-Buccaneers defenders now in the orange and blue ranks:

Winborn … John Lynch … Simeon Rice … Ian Gold … Nate Webster … Keith Burns (on the coaching staff as special-teams assistant).

“Broncaneers,” I uttered.

Looks like someone beat me to it. So, in the absence of further evidence, let’s give credit for that term to the Thin Air blog. “Brown-cos” yesterday, “Broncaneers” today. All part of the free-agency/salary-cap era of the NFL, where these groups of former players from teams seem to migrate jointly like enclaves of immigrants settle in communities based around the nation they left behind.

Of course, in the cases of Gold, Burns and Winborn, their sojourns in Tampa were brief. Gold and Burns’ primary identities are as Broncos; their Gulf Coast stay was a stopover. It’s much different for Lynch and Rice, whose names became famous as Buccaneers. Lynch, however, has authored a compelling second act along the Front Range; Rice might be on his way to doing the same after a strong opening game at Buffalo.

If you’re going to try and build an outstanding defense, it doesn’t hurt to nab key parts from one of the best of recent times. Assistant head coach/defense Jim Bates has expressed admiration for the Bucs’ defense of the last 12 seasons; now, under his watch, are some of the reasons why it flourished.
