Manning Leads Pro Bowl Votes

November 14th, 2012 - 2:07pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

Voting for the 2013 Pro Bowl has been underway for about three weeks, and the early returns are in.

Quarterback Peyton Manning leads all vote-getters for the all-star game with 376,981 votes, and therefore is first in line at his position on the AFC squad.

Plenty more Broncos are among the top-five at their respective positions in the AFC, including outside linebackers Von Miller and Wesley Woodyard, who are one and two among AFC vote-getters.

The Broncos also have two wide receivers near the top of AFC voting — Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker are currently ranked Nos. 4 and 5 at their position.

Fullback Chris Gronkowski is currently No. 5 at his position, tight end Jacob Tamme is No. 5 at his position, Ryan Clady is No. 3 among AFC tackles, Zane Beadles is the second-highest vote-getter among AFC guards, center Dan Koppen is currently fourth in votes at his position, defensive end Elvis Dumervil ranks second, Champ Bailey is third among AFC cornerbacks, Rahim Moore is the fifth AFC free safety, Matt Prater is the No. 4 kicker, Britton Colquitt is the No. 4 punter, Trindon Holliday is the No. 5 returner and David Bruton is the No. 4 AFC special-teamer.

Tamme Remains Confident

October 10th, 2012 - 9:24am by Tyler EverettOther posts by

Despite a 2-3 start, the Broncos find themselves in the thick of the AFC West title race.

Denver will travel to San Diego for a Monday night showdown this week that gives the Broncos a chance to tie the Chargers for the division lead. The team’s place in the standings is helping it stay positive and focused after a 31-21 loss to the Patriots.

“That’s the good news,” tight end Jacob Tamme said. “We’ve got a chance to get right there at the top of the division lead again. Nobody’s real happy around here right now, but no one’s discouraged at the same time. It’s time to get back to work and get ready for this week.”

Each of the Broncos’ first three losses of the season have come against quality competition in Atlanta and Houston, who are both 5-0, and the defending AFC Champion Patriots. Week 6 will be no different, as Denver takes on a 3-2 San Diego squad. Tamme said the team should expect to win week in and week out, regardless of the opposition.

“We feel like we should be able to go strap it up with anybody, and we’ve missed some opportunities to kind of prove that,” Tamme said. “We’ve played good teams. Every team in this league is pretty good. At the end of the day, you’ve got to win. You’ve got to win against good teams. We’ll go back to work and try to get a little better this week.”

Kuper Returns to Practice

September 26th, 2012 - 11:48am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

On Monday, Head Coach John Fox said the team would take a “look-see” at guard Chris Kuper this week in practice.

It appears the look-see got started on Wednesday, as the team captain was on the field in full pads with the rest of the club for the start of practice.

Kuper hasn’t participated in practice since fracturing his forearm in training camp on Aug. 14.

On this week’s Elway Access, Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway hinted that Wednesday’s revelation could be coming.

“He’ll be practicing and get back into the swing of things this week, so we’ll see how the week goes,” Elway said of the seventh-year veteran, who has 73 career starts. “Any time you have a guy that’s a team leader like ‘Kup’ is, it’ll be nice to have him back out there in pads and back involved.”

Kuper led the breakdown of the team’s huddle to start Wednesday’s practice, drawing cheers from his teammates.

In addition, three players listed by Head Coach John Fox on the postgame Week 3 injury report were back on the practice field — running back Willis McGahee, cornerback Tracy Porter and tight end Jacob Tamme.

The two other players on the injury report after the Houston game — wide receiver Matthew Willis and linebacker Nate Irving — were on the field for stretch period, but were not wearing pads.

Broncos at Bears: Quotables

Head Coach John Fox

On injuries during the game
“Injuries from the game: Danny Trevathan had an ankle sprain, Chris Gronkowski had a groin pull, Chris Clark as well had a groin pull. All three of those left the game. Not serious, but it’s something we’ll manage moving forward.”

On Peyton Manning’s performance
“I thought it was good. It was a very good first outing. There were actually some bright spots all through the offense, defense and kicking game. For a guy that hasn’t played in a season, had some medical issues, I think he’s done outstanding, which you can expect from him. I thought it was very good.”

On Manning’s intercepted pass aimed at Brandon Stokley
“The ball got popped up a little bit, flopped around and their guy made a good play on it. Those things happen. I thought we rebounded pretty well. There were a couple turnovers in the game, probably a few more penalties than either team would like, but very typical of a first preseason game.”

On Manning’s third-down conversion to Eric Decker
“He’s going to continue to improve. So hopefully that’s the whole challenge of our team. It’s a good first start, a good first outing. It’s what we do from it from here on that’s going to count.”

Tamme Expects Tight Ends to Contribute

July 25th, 2012 - 5:14pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

With Peyton Manning in 2010, Jacob Tamme recorded a career-high 67 catches for 631 yards and four scores — all in the last 10 games of the season after fellow tight end Dallas Clark was placed on injured reserve.

Tamme knows he has a chance to put up similar numbers reunited with Manning in Denver this season — but individual goals aren’t his biggest concern with the start of training camp less than 24 hours away.

“I feel like it’s my job to do what I’m supposed to do to help the team win,” Tamme said. “Some games that might be catching 10 balls, some games it might not be catching any balls. It might be blocking more, it might be whatever. I certainly think there’s opportunity for everyone to get involved and have fun and have numbers and all that stuff, but that’s not what it’s about for me and I don’t think that’s what anybody’s real focus is on.”

The tight end didn’t shy away from addressing the high expectations surrounding the team this season, and while he isn’t worried about his personal statistics, he hopes he, Joel Dreessen and the rest of the tight end corps can help the team accomplish its goals.

Chain Reaction

March 30th, 2012 - 10:01am by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

When the Broncos signed quarterback Peyton Manning, much was made about the on-field contributions expected of the four-time NFL MVP. With the first Sunday of the regular season 164 days away, Manning has already helped the team improve via the free agent market.

In the ten days since Manning agreed to terms on March 20, the Broncos have added seven additional free agents: WR Andre Caldwell, LB Wesley Woodyard, CB Tracy Porter, QB Caleb Hanie, TE Joel Dreessen, TE Jacob Tamme and DE Jason Hunter.

Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway said that he expected other free agents to be excited about the prospects of playing with a proven winner like Manning.

“It always helps because when you have a guy on your team like Peyton Manning, you have a chance to win and players in the NFL know that,” Elway said. “There are a lot of guys out there that are free that want to go somewhere where they can win championships. It is a huge benefit and it already has [helped]. We have seen that as we have seen the reaction of guys on our football team that we have been dealing with, even within the league. It is a huge plus to have a Peyton Manning on your roster.”

Tamme Talks Manning

March 23rd, 2012 - 3:36pm by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

Having spent the past four seasons in Indianapolis with Peyton Manning, newly acquired tight end Jacob Tamme knows what it’s like to play in Manning’s preferred hurry-up style of offense.

Tamme, who agreed to terms with the Broncos earlier in the day, spent the first three years of his career catching passes from Manning. In 2010, which was their last year playing together with Manning as the quarterback, Tamme set career highs with 67 catches for 631 yards and four touchdowns.

“It’s fun to play ball with him,” Tamme said about playing with Manning. “Offensively, you go into a game with a game plan that you know that you can succeed. You know that if everyone executes their job, good things will happen. He’s a great leader. I think everyone will really enjoy having him as a teammate.”
