Broncos vs. Packers: Fourth Quarter Notes

August 22nd, 2008 - 9:21pm by Adam ZinserOther posts by

15:00: With a fourth-and-goal from just a few inches out, the Broncos will go for it. Head Coach Mike Shanahan and Cutler both talked with Patrick Ramsey before the teams retook the field for the opening play of the fourth quarter.

15:00: Ramsey attempted to hit Clifford Russell in the back of the endzone but couldn’t make the connection as the ball passed in and out of Russell’s hands. Turnover-on-downs, and the Packers have the ball at their own one.

13:45: The Packers failed to get a first down, and with a fourth-and-three from their own eight, Jon Ryan comes in to punt the ball away. Martinez bobbled the punt, but managed to pick it up and return it 11 yards to the Packer 46-yard line.

13:30: Ramsey fires deep down the right sideline for Colbert, who made a nice adjustment to get to the ball, but he was hit hard by Jarrett Bush and couldn’t hold on.

Broncos vs. Packers: Third Quarter Notes

August 22nd, 2008 - 8:44pm by Adam ZinserOther posts by

15:00: Clifford Russell and Glenn Martinez back deep for the second-half kickoff. It doesn’t look like we’ll see the starters anymore, as Marshall and Champ just now came out of the tunnel without pads on. I have not even spotted Cutler yet.

14:55: Martinez takes the kickoff out to the 20, and Ramsey does indeed come out onto the field to lead the offense. Marquand Manuel was shaken up on the kickoff, but he just got up and is walking off the field.

13:48: Ramsey gets hit as he throws on third-and-seven, and the pass is batted down by Aaron Kampman. Kern comes out to punt and he booms it 59 yards. But Kern’s long punt amounted to little, as Blackmon returns it 43 yards to the Denver 40.

Broncos vs. Packers: Second Quarter Notes

August 22nd, 2008 - 7:45pm by Adam ZinserOther posts by

15:00: The Broncos defense forced a punt, and the Packers were able to down the punt inside the one-yard line. Cutler and co. will come out to start their drive from deep in their own territory.

14:32: The Broncos face a third-and-eight from their own two-yard line. Cutler fakes a handoff and then hits Peyton Hillis, who breaks out of a tackle and trucks his way for 15 yards. First down Denver.

12:30: Andre Hall bursts up the middle for 18 yards and another first down. Selvin Young comes in to give him a breather.

11:25: Facing a third-and-short, Young powers up the middle for some tough yardage, getting the first down and moving out close to midfield.

9:20: The Broncos continue down the field, and on a first-and-10, Cutler fires at Royal. Al Harris had great coverage, blanketing him and batting down the ball. It was close, but no penalty called. The crowd booed, however.

Broncos vs. Packers: First Quarter Notes

August 22nd, 2008 - 6:47pm by Adam ZinserOther posts by

15:00: Matt Prater kicks off for the Broncos. He boots it deep into the endzone for a touchback. First-and-10, Green Bay, at the 20. Aaron Rodgers takes the field at QB. Starting on D for the Broncos: Marquand Manuel, Marlon McCree, Dre’ Bly, Champ Bailey, D.J. Williams, Jamie Winborn, Nate Webster, Dewayne Robertson, Marcus Thomas, John Engelberger and Elvis Dumervil

13:48: The Packers’ first two plays were Rodgers passes, going for 35 and then 17 yards.

12:51: The Packers have the ball at the Denver 26, second-and-eight. Rodgers completes a pass to Greg Jennings close to a first down. Marlon McCree pushes Jennings out of bounds.

11:30: Rodgers kept the ball on a QB sneak for a first down on the previous play. Just handed off to Brandon Jackson for a seven yard gain, taking them to the seven yard line.

4:18 PM MDT: Three hours before kickoff, and things already look better than last week. That’s simply because it’s sunny and clear, and my computer tells me its 80 degrees.

The stands are empty except for event staff making the final preparations before the gates open in a little while. Some coaches are jogging warmup laps around the field.

Players from both teams are starting to trickle out onto the field now. I’ll be back in a bit with some more notes and photos as the teams start to warm up.

Broncos vs. Cowboys: Fourth Quarter Notes

15:00: The Broncos have a 2nd-and-4 at the Dallas 36. Pittman takes the handoff up the middle and gains two more yards.

14:30: Pittman takes a pitch to the right side and comes up just short of a first down — 4th and 1 at the 33 and the Broncos are going for it.

13:45: The Broncos call their second timeout — a full timeout — just as the play is about to be run.

13:45: Ramsey fakes a pitch to Pittman to the left and rolls out right, finds Colbert who had his man beat, throws behind him just a little but Colbert adjusts, catches it, turns and takes it to the 5-yard line.

12:22: Ramsey lobs a pass to the back right corner of the endzone and Clifford Russell almost goes up and gets it — it falls off his fingertips as he leans backward and falls out of the endzone. Third and goal.

15:00: The Broncos kick off to the Cowboys — Orlando Scandrick and Isaiah Stanback are back to return. Prater again kicks it to the back of the endzone and Stanback takes a knee for a touchback.

15:00: Johnson makes a pass over the middle to Felix Jones who breaks a tackle and has a big gain up tot the 47.

13:41: Rookie tight end Martellus Bennett makes people bounce off of him as he gains another first down.

11:07: Nic Clemons brings down Tashard Choice in the backfield, bringing up 3rd and 14 on the Denver 31. Johnson is in the shotgun and dumps it quickly up the middle to No. 89 but it’s short of the first down. 4th and 6.

10:31: Nick Folk makes a 42-yard field goal. Denver 14, Dallas 10.

15:00: It’s just been reported that Daniel Graham is out with a hamstring and his return is questionable.

15:00: Eddie Royal makes a grab past the defense all the way to the Dallas 27-yard line.

14:22: Brandon Marshall makes the grab and gets another first down before getting hit by two Cowboys at the 9-yard line.

13:43: Andre Hall gains 6 yards up the middle to the 3-yard line. Second and goal.

13:02: Cutler rolls right and finds Marshall in the back of the endzone for a touchdown. He runs to the stands and gives a lucky fan in the first row the ball. Prater runs out for the extra point with Brett Kern holding. It’s good. Broncos 14, Cowboys 0.

15:00: The Cowboys won the toss and deferred — a new rule for this season — and the Broncos will receive to start the game.

14:53: Josh Barrett limped off the field after he was shaken up on the kickoff return.

14:53: After a 32-yard Andre Hall return, Cutler pitches the ball out to Selvin Young for a gain to the right side. Flag on the play — holding on the offense. That brings up 1st-and-20.

14:45: Play-action pass to Marshall for a solid gain that brings up 2nd-and-8.

13:51: Cutler drops back, lets it fly to the right side and Eddie Royal has found a hole in the defense. He makes a 35-yard reception to set up the ball at the 28-yard line.

11:44: Andre Hall takes a big hit from Zach Thomas in the backfield for a loss of one on 2nd down, that brings up 3rd and nine. It’s just been announced that Josh Barrett is “OK” after he limped off the field.

4:51 PM MST: The grounds crew at INVESCO Field at Mile High is taking the tarp off the field on what has been a very rainy Saturday. We’re only a couple hours from kickoff now, so stay here for updates. I’m going to go down and grab some pictures with Jake Grilley to give you a little taste of what it looks like on the field. Be back in a few.

5:36 PM MST: All right, back with some pictures.
