Elway Hoping to “Get More Connected”

May 7th, 2010 - 9:45am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

John Elway has no immediate plans to get into coaching.

In fact, after competing in the Colorado Golf Association 4-Ball tournament in Westminster on Tuesday, he called it something he can “always fall back on.”

In the meantime, the Hall-of-Fame quarterback is hoping to be seen a little more often around Dove Valley, helping out the Broncos any way he can while “on the outside looking in.”

“I’m hoping to get to know Tim (Tebow), and if he’s got questions I’d love to be able to help him out, as well as Kyle (Orton) and Brady (Quinn),” Elway told a group of reporters in a sit-down interview. “That’s kind of what I’ve missed is that connection, so I’m hoping to get more connected.”

After speaking to parents and students in the “Teaming up to Take Charge of Asthma” event at Montbello High School on Wednesday, Head Coach Josh McDaniels couldn’t help but smile when he heard Elway’s plans to get more involved.

McDaniels Comments on Clady

April 28th, 2010 - 5:15pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora is reporting that Ryan Clady has undergone knee surgery, and will be out for three-to-four months.

“It’s an unfortunate situation with Ryan, but we’re hopeful that everything will be OK for the season,” Head Coach Josh McDaniels told NFL Network.

He said that although the situation “is not ideal,” it could benefit some of the other players on the roster, as they could see increased playing time in upcoming minicamps.

It’s How You Play, Not Who You Play

The long awaited 2010 National Football League schedule is out at last, making the coming season truly seem to be right around the corner.

As always, there is a great deal of speculation and analysis about tough schedules, easy schedules, etc., and that puts me in mind of a past moment in which I asked a coach to compare our schedule with that of a division opponent.

On The Clock

The draft is upon us. As there is every year, there has been plenty of talk about what will happen. It is fun to wonder what will happen. It is fun to consider the many scenarios that could unfold for every team.

I always try to keep two main things in mind when trying to guess what any given team might do.

1 – NO ONE KNOWS WHAT WILL HAPPEN UNTIL IT HAPPENS. I know, no kidding. But with so many people offering their opinions, one can easily think that any one of them actually knows what will transpire.

Moving On

April 15th, 2010 - 12:35am by mike_riceOther posts by

The speculation has ended. Brandon Marshall will not play for the Broncos any more. On Wednesday, the Broncos traded Marshall to the Dolphins for Miami’s second-round draft pick this year and in 2011.

There is little doubting Marshall’s immense talent as a wide receiver. You don’t make 307 catches for 3,710 yards and 23 touchdowns in the last three seasons by accident. The guy can play. And he can dominate.

Marshall has been the most reliable and most talented skill position player on the Broncos’ offense the last several years.

He has also been the most disgruntled. While his production was a bright spot, his conduct did not rise to the same level. That was tough to watch.

QB Trade Always Brings Excitement

March 16th, 2010 - 4:14pm by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

The trade bringing quarterback Brady Quinn to the Denver Broncos has seriously ramped up Broncomania talk in the Mile High City, even allowing for the high level always present among our fans.

Any time a quarterback is involved, everyone gets very excited, and in this case, the credential portfolio which Brady Quinn carries to the Broncos includes that of being the all time winningest quarterback at Notre Dame. While with the Irish, Quinn set 36 school records while playing for the coach who stands as one of the mentors in the career of Josh McDaniels.

The Plot Thickens

March 15th, 2010 - 11:47pm by mike_riceOther posts by

For the second straight offseason, the Broncos have made a big trade involving a quarterback. The team’s acquisition of Brady Quinn certainly isn’t as big as the Jay Cutler deal a year ago, but any time a big-name quarterback is involved, it’s news.

As far as the trade itself, the Broncos were in a low-risk, high-reward situation. It was clear that Peyton Hillis was not going to factor in as one of the top two running backs for the Broncos. Head coach Josh McDaniels said on more than one occasion last year that he does not believe in getting three running backs regular reps because he believes that adversely affects the ability for any of these running backs to get into a rhythm.

Even though many fans have clamored for Hillis to get more playing time, it didn’t happen and never was going to happen (barring injury or some unforeseen situation) with Josh McDaniels as the Broncos’ head coach. Whether or not one agrees or disagrees with that makes for a good sports talk show topic or newspaper column, but it doesn’t change the fact that McDaniels did not see Hillis as one of the top couple of running backs. Thus, Hillis was not going to get meaningful playing time on a regular basis.

Busy at Work on Free Agency

March 10th, 2010 - 11:48am by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

Denver Broncos Head Coach Josh McDaniels and General Manager Brian Xanders have been organized, fast and effective in addressing the defensive line so far in free agency.

For anyone watching or keeping tabs, no National Football League team has added as many potential – we say potential because everything has to be earned on the field – new starters on its defensive line as the Broncos with the their three new linemen.

Indeed, Denver has signed four players in free agency so far, all on defense. Cornerback/safety/special teams standout Nathan Jones is the only one who does not play the D-line, and he has earned excellent reviews for his versatility and style of play of both defense and on kicking teams.

Gearing Up

February 21st, 2010 - 8:53pm by mike_riceOther posts by

The time is drawing close. The several weeks of calm that hits the NFL after the Super Bowl is about to give way to a flurry of activity with free agency, the draft and mini-camps.

While the Broncos gear up, let’s take a look at what has happened to this point and what might come.

First, the Broncos have solidified their coaching staff. The biggest change came at defensive coordinator. Out is Mike Nolan; in is Don Martindale, the team’s linebackers coach a year ago.

On the one hand, I was sorry to see Coach Nolan go. Clearly there were some issues between head coach Josh McDaniels and Nolan. While some people like to read into such a parting, to me this is a merely routine occurrence in the ever-changing world of the NFL. Sometimes two people see things differently. Such seems to be the case here.

A Final Look Back

February 5th, 2010 - 10:55am by mike_riceOther posts by

I must admit, it has been a little strange to watch the playoffs without the Broncos taking part. Before the season began, I remember people asking me how I thought the Broncos would do. My response was I thought they would have a record in the 7-9 to 9-7 range and thought they would have a chance to make the playoffs.

In the big picture, the Broncos ended up pretty much where I thought they would. There are so many uncertainties when a new head coach and a new coaching staff take over. The fact the Broncos went 8-8 and missed the playoffs wasn’t discouraging to me. I thought they took some good steps, and I’ll talk about those in a moment.

What made the season so tough was how the Broncos arrived at their final record. When any team starts 6-0, one expects more than a final record of 8-8 and missing out on the postseason.

But in stepping back a little, which is always tough in light of a 2-8 finish, I still believe the Broncos did some really good things this year.

Here are a few of them.
