A.M. Blog: Day 7

After a short press conference with Head Coach Mike Shanahan, John Lynch officially announced that he is leaving the Broncos to explore other options. The Broncos granted his release.

I have always looked at Lynch as one of the class acts in the NFL. He has been one of my all-time favorite players for as long as I can remember following football. I wish that I could have worked with him more.

47, best of luck in all your future endeavors!

Now on to some of the meat from this morning’s practice.

ATTENDANCE REPORT: After participating in yesterday afternoon’s jog-through practice, Montrae Holland continued to work out on his own this morning. Tom Nalen continued to watch from the sidelines to rest his knee, but he kept his eyes on all the offensive line action. Michael Pittman donned his jersey, but was yet again out of pads. He stuck with the rest of the running backs, observing and giving pointers. Peyton Hillis and Chad Mustard both remained sidelined with their sore hamstrings. Also out of pads was Ebenezer Ekuban. He was on the field watching the action, but not participating.

POSTURING FOR POSITION: Wiegmann continued to work at center with Nalen out, and today he spoke with a couple reporters after practice.

“I’m getting reps in there with the starters, and the important thing is actually me getting used to them,” Wiegmann said. “I have been so used to my guys in Kansas City, so it’s just getting a feel for everybody here. That’s part of camp.”

A.M. Blog: Day 6

This morning’s practice was once again highlighted by the defense. A day after the offense made some solid plays, the defense tightened up and made sure most of the action was on their side of the ball. There were still some offensive highlights, however. Here are some quick hits.

ATTENDANCE REPORT: John Lynch was excused from practice for personal reasons…Peyton Hillis remained out of pads with a left hamstring…Michael Pittman was out of pads with a left hamstring…Dewayne Robertson was out of pads with a left knee…Tom Nalen came out to practice with a jersey on but took it off before warmups, watching practice from the sidlines…Chad Mustard, on the PUP list, was out of pads with a right hamstring…Montrae Holland continued working with Strength and Conditioning Coach Rich Tuten to get to his playing weight.

A.M. Blog: Day 2

Day Two has started, and there’s a special teams practice later this afternoon. We’re trying to put this thing up quick for you guys. By the way, let us know if there is any particular player you’d like to see pictures of, and we’ll try to accomodate that. Here are some quick hits:

ATTENDANCE REPORT: Chad Mustard was out of pads for the second day with a right hamstring injury…Edell Shepherd was out of pads after injuring his left knee in practice yesterday…rookie Spencer Larsen, who missed his second straight practice, is attending to a family emergency according to Head Coach Mike Shanahan…Montrae Holland is still practicing with Strength and Conditioning Coach Rich Tuten until he gets to his reporting weight.

POSTURING FOR POSITION: On the first play of 11-on-11, full team scrimmaging, the starting backfield was composed of Jay Cutler, Selvin Young and Cecil Sapp. The starting receivers were Brandon Marshall and Darrell Jackson, and Daniel Graham started at tight end. Ryan Clady, Ben Hamilton, Tom Nalen, Chris Kuper and Ryan Harris made up the offensive line.

The defense marched out Champ Bailey, Dre’ Bly, John Lynch and Hamza Abdullah in the secondary, Boss Bailey, Niko Koutouvides and D.J. Williams at the linebacker positions and John Engelberger, Dewayne Robertson, Kenny Peterson and Elvis Dumervil on the line.

Award Winning Broncos

I went to the Denver Boys and Girls Club Youth of the Year banquet that I went to on Friday. I was there with Champ and Boss Bailey, who came with his wife. It was my second year going, I went the year before. It’s always a great function because it is a big fundraiser. They raise tons and tons of money for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Denver.

They honor somebody every year – last year they honored Pat Hamill, who is the Chairman of Oakwood Homes. He and I have become friends since then. This year, they honored Pat Bowlen, who is one of my favorite people in the world, he signs my checks. I guess I have to change my name to Pat to be honored by them.

It’s a great event to raise money for the Boys and Girls Club. One of the cool things about it is the entertainment is singing and dancing and poems written and performed by kids from the Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Denver. It’s always impressive because the kids are really, really talented. Since I’m normally at the Boys and Girls Club once a week – the Broncos branch – I know a lot of the kids that won and I know a lot of the kids that performed. So, it’s very personal which is pretty cool.

Goal Reached!

I have had a lot transpire in the last couple of weeks. As you may have read I made the executive board of the NFL Players Association (NFLPA). I am one of 10 players and was told that I am the youngest player ever, which is a major accomplishment for me. I am just really proud and honored to be named to this board and I look forward to the responsibilities that it requires to be a representative of the NFL as a whole and not just the Broncos. They added three new members, because two dropped off and one — Kevin Mawae of the Tennessee Titans — became the president. We added Mike Vrabel of the New England Patriots, Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints and myself.

All 10 positions were elected in. Seven people returned and the rest were nominated. I was nominated all three times, but it got kind of dramatic at the end. The very first time Rod (Smith) nominated me, but I didn’t quite make it. Then for the next spot, T.J. Houshmandzadeh of the Cincinnati Bengals nominated me and I didn’t quite make that one. The last time, Drew Brees nominated me and each person that was nominated had to give a little speech. So I gave a little speech and I guess it put me over the top and they voted me in. I was very proud. The next day I was sitting on the stage next to the President of the Player’s Association and the Executive Director Gene Upshaw. I felt kind of important, but mostly I was honored and proud for the opportunity.

Through the Roster: Hamza Abdullah

Perhaps Hamza Abdullah’s starting opportunity might have come sooner had he not sustained a hip-flexor injury in Week 2 against the Raiders. He missed the following five games, but by the time he returned on Nov. 4 against Detroit, he was in line for the most extensive action of his career to date, splitting time with then-starting safety Nick Ferguson.

A week later, Abdullah was in the starting lineup — for good, as it turned out. He started at free safety in Kansas City while John Lynch recovered from a neck stinger, then moved to strong safety for the balance of the regular season.

Flashes of brilliance defined Abdullah’s half-season as starter. He notched 40 total tackles in his eight starts — tied for third on the team and first among defensive backs along with Champ Bailey — but also missed some stops, perhaps most notably in the Week 15 loss at Houston, when tight end Owen Daniels got free past him in the open field after a reception, leading to a 15-yard gain on third-and-6 that pulled the Texans out of purgatory at their own 8-yard-line.

Frustrated Bronco

Oh, the many frustrations of this season as a Denver Bronco.

We had another loss, another frustrating loss, against a team we feel like we could beat. That seems to be the story of the season. We come off a great game and then play poorly.

We have been extremely inconsistent. It’s frustrating missing the playoffs this year. It’s one of the many drawbacks of our inconsistency and the constant change that we’ve had especially as a defense. One of the most unfortunate things about having a season like this is the casualties we have around here as far as players are concerned. It’s just the way the business is if your team isn’t producing. Generally, someone has to pay the price. Sometimes coaches get cut, sometimes players get cut. Fan support thins. So there’s a lot of prices being paid around here right now.

Starting To Look Ahead

I know there are two games left and the Broncos need to try to win them. But I’m taking a deep breath after the loss to Houston and starting to think about next year.

The Broncos aren’t mathematically eliminated from the playoffs but the way they are playing, and have played this year, they have showed they are not a playoff team.

But they have pieces in place that, to me, show they could be a playoff team again as early as next year.

Out of the Woods…

We win!

Me and my main man Hamza Abdullah filled in at safety. Hamza is definitely one of my closest friends on the team. I’ve talked about him a lot on the blog before and how he’s a very good young safety. We were able to start together at safety for the Kansas City game, and all week practicing together we just had a great time. We had fun communicating and making plays all week during practice. It was a whole lot of fun, and then of course the game was even more fun. There’s definitely something special about playing and performing with somebody that you have a pretty good friendship with. While you’re on the field you feel really close to everybody out there and you want everybody to do well, but there’s something different about being out there with guys that you really care about. I think the people in the secondary, we all really care about each other and we’re close friends.

It was just a great performance by the team overall, and there were some great plays in the secondary. There were a bunch of interceptions, and unfortunately I was not able to get one, but it doesn’t really matter. We won. That’s all that matters, because we are now winners. I like being a winner. Being a loser stinks. I don’t think I want to be a loser anymore. I’d like to win a lot more games.

Broncos-Lions: Pregame Notes

The Broncos will have to make do without safety John Lynch.

After being limited in practice on Thursday and Friday as he recovered from the pinched nerve he incurred against Green Bay last Monday, Lynch was one of the eight players scratched for today’s game against the Detroit Lions.

Joining Lynch on the sidelines will be fullback/running back Mike Bell, safety Curome Cox, defensive tackle Amon Gordon, guard Isaac Snell, tight end Chad Mustard, wide receiver Javon Walker and defensive end Jarvis Moss, whose season ended last Thursday when he fractured his fibula and tore ankle ligaments in practice. However, he has not yet been moved to injured reserve.

Hamza Abdullah, meanwhile, will make his return to the lineup after missing the last five games with a strained hip flexor. With Cox inactive, Abdullah is one of three pure safeties active for the game, joining Nick Ferguson and Steve Cargile. Cornerback Domonique Foxworth, however, is expected to see substantial action back at safety, as he did last week following Lynch’s injury and back in December 2006 when Ferguson was lost for the season.

Detroit’s inactives players included running back Tatum Bell, whom the Lions acquired from Denver in the Dre’ Bly trade eight months ago. Joining him are cornerbacks Dovonte Edwards and Tony Beckham, guards Blaine Saipia and Manny Ramirez, defensive ends Ikaika Alama-Francis and Kalimba Edwards and quarterback Dan Orlovsky, who is in uniform per the NFL’s rules regarding third quarterbacks.
