Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced a short while ago the placement of Tom Nalen on injured reserve. Now there’s even more news out of Dove Valley.
With Nalen on IR, the Broncos had an open spot on the roster. To fill that void, the team has signed safety Vernon Fox, Shanahan announced.
A seventh-year player out of Fresno State, Fox spent two years each with the San Diego Chargers, Detroit Lions and Washington Redskins. He has seen action in 86 games with 11 starts, and he totaled 129 tackles, four passes defensed and two interceptions.
Shanahan also announced that the Broncos have waived safety Hamza Abdullah.
Abdullah began his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after they selected him in the seventh round of the 2005 NFL draft. HE was placed on their practice squad before Denver signed him to their active roster in November 2005. Abdullah saw action in 23 games, including eight starts in 2007, and he recorded 43 tackles, seven passes defensed, a forced fumble and fumble recovery.
The Broncos also released wide receiver Travis Wilson from the practice squad. He was signed to the Broncos on September 1, 2008.

The Broncos released a new and updated depth chart Saturday, with some interesting changes on it.
The starting lineup remains the same on offense, with Eddie Royal continuing to hold onto that #2 wideout spot opposite Brandon Marshall. But Glenn Martinez has moved up behind Marshall.
Nate Jackson remains at the #2 spot behind Daniel Graham, with Scheffler at the #3. Jackson has worked with Graham in the team’s two-tight end sets, and he started on Friday against the Packers, scoring a touchdown in the process.
Peyton Hillis holds onto the #2 fullback spot behind Cecil Sapp. He saw significant action Friday night and performed well.
On defense, Marquand Manuel is listed as the starter opposite Marlon McCree. Hamza Abdullah mans the #2 spot behind Manuel, with Roderick Rogers and Josh Barrett behind him, in that order.
Vickiel Vaughn is at #2 behind McCree.
Also, Brett Kern is listed as the starting punter.
You can check out the full depth chart here.
What do y’all think about the changes and how things have progressed?

The ‘Boys were back in town Wednesday afternoon, and their offseason media circus came with them. There were easily double the reporters and photographers on the sidelines, many of which were from the HBO training camp documentary: Hard Knocks. Recently-retired Rod Smith even showed up to take in the action from the sidelines. Still, with all that attention focusing on the fields, the players went out and put together a productive and exciting practice.

The teams started out with their regular routines, Cowboys on one field and Broncos on the other — stretching, warming up and working on individual drills. Then the Broncos offense went to one field and the defense to the other, and the fun really started.
ATTENDANCE REPORT: Hamza Abdullah was back in pads this morning…Boss and Champ Bailey were out of pads with a right ankle and right hamstring, respectively…Louis Green was out of pads with a concussion/neck injury…Tom Nalen remained out of pads with a left knee…Erik Pears was out of pads with a sore back…Ryan Torain watched from a chair on the far sideline recovering from surgery on his left elbow.

POSTURING FOR POSITION: Niko Koutouvides took his reps with the first unit linebackers during practice, with Jamie Winborn and D.J. Williams on either side…The second unit linebackers consisted of Jordan Beck, Nate Webster and Wesley Woodyard…Abdullah, in his first day back at practice since Aug. 1, ran with the second team safeties beside Roderick Rogers.
MATCHUPS: Each field had a different set of drills, so we, the bloggers, decided to combine “Focal Points” and “Key Plays” into one category. So here is the breakdown of how each competition went down.

It’s less than 24 hours until the Broncos host the Cowboys for a couple days of joint practices, and the team held a two hour practice without pads Tuesday morning, the last day for fans to watch training camp.
As has often been the case, things got started with a laugh as D.J. Williams called up coach and former Bronco Keith Burns to lead the team’s breakdown.

ATTENDANCE REPORT: Hamza Abdullah, Boss and Champ Bailey, Louis Green, Peyton Hillis, Tom Nalen, Erik Pears and Ryan Torain were all listed on the out of pads list with their various injuries. Hillis did participate in practice, however. Champ, Green, Nalen and Pears all watched from the sidelines. Boss remained inside rehabbing his sprained ankle.
- Chad Mustard has been moved from the Physically Unable to Perform list to the active roster.
- New cornerback Wale Dada participated in practice after the team waived Lamont Reid. The previous blog entry gives a little more information on the newest member of the Broncos.

TORAIN UPDATE: Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced after the morning session that running back Ryan Torain will need surgery to repair damage done to his elbow during practice on Wednesday. Torain broke the upper bone in his elbow and an MRI revealed ligament damage.
“We will see how the operation goes and see what the doctors say,” Shanahan said. “But it is obviously more serious that we first thought.”
Torain gives an update in his blog entry.
In preparation for Saturday’s preseason opener at Houston the Broncos held an abridged morning session without pads, similar to the team’s afternoon jog through sessions.

Though the sun broke through for most of the afternoon practice, it was definitely much cooler than this morning’s session, and thankfully, the dark clouds heading this way held off just long enough for the team to wrap things up and head inside.
ATTENDANCE REPORT: Hamza Abdullah, Champ Bailey, Peyton Hillis, Chad Mustard, Tom Nalen and Dewayne Robertson all watched from the sidelines with their various injuries/soreness. Abdullah was doing some calisthenics with out on the field to help rehab his groin before practice began. One end of a large elastic band was wrapped around his waist with the other end tied to one of the goal posts. He high-stepped sideways until the band became fully extended and taught, then would move back towards the goal post.

After a record-setting streak of days with the temperature above 90 degrees, Tuesday morning brought a much welcomed cool front. When I heard over the radio on the way to Dove Valley that the high was predicted to be 82 degrees, I laughed.
Thankfully, they were right. The players (and I) enjoyed temperatures in the low 70s throughout the morning camp session. And now for quick hits from practice.
ATTENDANCE REPORT: Hamza Abdullah remained on the sideline, nursing his strained groin. Peyton Hillis, after making it back onto the field yesterday morning, sat out again. Chad Mustard and Tom Nalen remain out with a right hamstring and left knee, respectively. Montrae Holland continues to work on his own, though he later came out and watched from the sidelines. He looks slimmer to me.
Champ Bailey also missed practice with a sore right hamstring. Bailey spent his time watching from the sidelines with teammates or on the field talking with Head Coach Mike Shanahan. But don’t worry Broncos Country, Shanahan quickly pointed out that No. 24 is a quick healer.

Both the offense and the defense looked sharp during this morning’s session. But throughout practice the offense had a slight edge on their defensive counterparts.
ATTENDANCE REPORT: Hamza Abdullah remained on the sidelines with a groin injury… Tom Nalen didn’t dress due to a right knee… Chad Mustard is still nursing a right hamstring. Montrae Holland is continuing to work with strength coach Rich Tuten to reach his reporting weight. Boss Bailey was back on the practice field after sitting out the last two sessions with soreness in his right knee.
POSTURING FOR POSITION: The battle for the starting middle linebacker position continues to be tight. Nate Webster was listed as the first team linebacker on the Broncos newly released depth chart but Niko Koutouvides got the reps with the first unit during this morning’s session. With Abdullah sitting out with his groin injury, Marquand Manuel was getting reps with the first team at strong safety.

The team has just officially released the 2008 depth chart. Though things may change over the course of the next few weeks, it provides a glimpse of who will be taking the field on Sundays.
Of note, Ryan Harris starts at right tackle. Not too much of a surprise since he took most of the reps thus far in training camp.
Darrell Jackson holds the number two WR spot across from Brandon Marshall.
Cecil Sapp starts at fullback.
Marcus Thomas will now line up with the ones at defensive tackle.
Nate Webster has taken over the starting MLB spot.
Hamza Abdullah and Marlon McCree take on the starting strong and free safety roles, respectively.
Sam Paulescu and Matt Prater are tops for the punting and kicking duties.
Eddie Royal is the top return man on both punts and kickoffs.
Check out the entire depth chart here.
Let us know what y’all think about this!

The Broncos began their second week of training camp Friday morning. Here are some happenings from the a.m. session.
ATTENDANCE REPORT: The out of pads list remained the same as yesterday with Peyton Hillis, Chad Mustard and Tom Nalen not in uniform. Michael Pittman, who was also listed as out of pads, wore his jersey sans his helmet and shoulder pads while observing drills.
Boss Bailey was held out due to inflammation is his knee and Hamza Abdullah was held out the final portion of practice due a sore groin.
POSTURING FOR POSITION: The Broncos 2007 draft class showed its presence on the second unit defensive line. Jarvis Moss, Marcus Thomas and Tim Crowder took the reps along with Alvin McKinley.
For the second straight day Nate Webster took reps with the first unit defense. The competition at middle linebacker is still tight between Webster and Niko Koutouvides.
