Lynch Learns He Is Closer to Canton

November 30th, 2012 - 4:13pm by Sam DavisOther posts by

Former Broncos safety, now FOX broadcaster John Lynch was sitting in a conference room at Dove Valley waiting to speak with quarterback Peyton Manning as part of his preparations for his broadcast of Sunday’s game against Tampa Bay, when he received some unexpected news.

Vice President of Corporate Communications Jim Saccomano, a friend of Lynch from their time spent together in the Broncos organization, walked in and happily informed him that he is one of 27 semifinalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

“He made me a little nervous because he said, ‘Congratulations — but let me check,” Lynch laughed. “And he backtracked a little bit. But then he brought the sheet in (to prove it), and it’s all good.”

Why Rod Smith is a Hall of Famer

September 29th, 2011 - 12:53pm by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

Earlier this week the Pro Football Hall of Fame released its preliminary list of candidates for induction in 2012.

There are 102 candidates on this list, which will be whittled down to 25 in mid-November, then to the final list of 15 which will be voted on by the selection committee the Saturday before the Super Bowl in Indianapolis.

Everyone on this list has had notable accomplishments. That’s how they made the list. On the list for the first time is wide receiver Rod Smith.

2010 Pro Football Hall of Fame Inductees

Editor’s Note: Broncos’ Vice President of Corporate Communications Jim Saccomano is in Canton, Ohio, this weekend as part of the team’s contingent for Floyd Little’s enshrinement in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Throughout the weekend, Saccomano will be phoning in some thoughts and observations on Little’s big weekend.

Saccomano arrived in Canton on Thursday afternoon with just enough time to stop at his hotel to throw on a tie before heading over to the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Trustees Reception.

The Trustees Reception brought together the six new inductees — Russ Grimm, Rickey Jackson, Dick LeBeau, John Randle, Jerry Rice and Emmitt Smith, in addition to Little — and their families, along with the families of about 80 living Hall of Famers and select NFL figures.

Saccomano described the scene as a window into an exclusive club, “like a post-Oscars dinner where someone like me is sometimes lucky enough to go.”

In the Green Room with Floyd

Little

Sunday morning at the Super Bowl, and I have just enough time before heading to the stadium for an 18-hiour day to pen a few notes about the Pro Football Hall of Fame selection.

Very disappointing about Shannon Sharpe, and there is no time like now, but he made the final 10, and every candidate who has ever made the final 10 has gotten in sooner or later and Shannon likely will make it sooner, as in very soon.

Had a chance to visit the green room (since I set up the facilities at the media center I knew where all the green rooms were, and who was in which one) as soon as Floyd’s name was called.

Keeping Our Fingers Crossed For Floyd

Floyd Little

Floyd Little comes up for a big vote by the selectors of the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday, and if all is right and just, he should be selected.

There are no guarantees, but beyond the extraordinary hold that he still has on the hearts and minds of Denver Broncos fans, his body of work screams for induction.

The statistics have been gone over and poured over time after time, but there are a couple of other facts to consider in “out of the box” thinking regarding Floyd.

Lots of Football Over the Next Eight Days

Pro Bowl

This is one of the most exciting weeks of the year for fans who follow football, which seems to be just about everybody in America.

For the first time since 1959 the National Football League all-star game, The Pro Bowl, will take place before the championship game.

I saw an interesting piece by Pat Kirwin on NFL.com today in which he said, basically, let’s give this Pro Bowl game a chance.

Here, here, Pat. That statement not only is fair but is the only one that could be accurate for the simple reason that no one knows what is going to happen in a live event that is not rehearsed.

It is so popular for the press to trash the game, and along the way they purport to us that this is the view of the entire country, when in fact television ratings (here I go again) for the last decade have steadily had the Pro Bowl as one of the most popular TV sporting events.

Saturday’s H.O.F. Announcement

January 30th, 2009 - 3:09pm by Adam ZinserOther posts by

As most of you know, Shannon Sharpe is among the 17 finalists for the Hall of Fame Class of 2009 in his first year of eligibility.

Of those 17 finalists, only a select few will be enshrined in the Hall this year, and that announcement is scheduled to come Saturday at approximately 12:30 p.m. MST. You can watch the announcement live on the NFL Network at that time.

We will keep you filled in on all the latest info regarding the announcement and let you know if Sharpe will be just the third Bronco to be named to the Hall of Fame.

Sharpe a H.O.F. Finalist

January 6th, 2009 - 4:07pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

The NFL announced the finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2009, and Shannon Sharpe is among them.

There were 133 eligible candidates — players, coaches and contributors — at the beginning of the process, and Sharpe was only one of a handful of players in their first year of eligibility to be selected as one of the 25 semifinalists.

Former Bronco Terrell Davis was also one of the 25 semifinalists, though the Hall of Fame selectors only voted Sharpe through to the final 15.

Sharpe played 12 seasons in Orange and Blue and two seasons with the Baltimore Ravens during a playing career that spanned from 1990 to 2003.
