As most of you know, Shannon Sharpe is among the 17 finalists for the Hall of Fame Class of 2009 in his first year of eligibility.

Of those 17 finalists, only a select few will be enshrined in the Hall this year, and that announcement is scheduled to come Saturday at approximately 12:30 p.m. MST. You can watch the announcement live on the NFL Network at that time.

We will keep you filled in on all the latest info regarding the announcement and let you know if Sharpe will be just the third Bronco to be named to the Hall of Fame.

Sharpe a H.O.F. Finalist

January 6th, 2009 - 4:07pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by Gray Caldwell

The NFL announced the finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2009, and Shannon Sharpe is among them.

There were 133 eligible candidates — players, coaches and contributors — at the beginning of the process, and Sharpe was only one of a handful of players in their first year of eligibility to be selected as one of the 25 semifinalists.

Former Bronco Terrell Davis was also one of the 25 semifinalists, though the Hall of Fame selectors only voted Sharpe through to the final 15.

Sharpe played 12 seasons in Orange and Blue and two seasons with the Baltimore Ravens during a playing career that spanned from 1990 to 2003.

Giants is the Answer

December 2nd, 2008 - 9:39am by jim_saccomanoOther posts by jim_saccomano

The answer to my blog question Monday is the New York Giants, who had Vince Lombardi as their offensive coordinator, before he went to Green Bay, and Tom Landry as their defensive coordinator prior to going to the expansion Dallas Cowboys.

The blogger who said the Giants’ Lombardi, Landry and Jim Lee Howell was right on, but before Howell, Hall of Famer Steve Owen was the Giants’ head coach, so that franchise had three future Hall of Famers on staff.

And the only thing that promopted the question on my part in the first place was that at New York against the Jets Mike Shanahan earned his 153rd career win as a head coach, which ties Shanahan with Owen for 16th place all-time.

With one more win Mike Shanahan will pass Owen and move into a 15th place tie with another Hall of Fame head coach, Marv Levy.

Anytime one’s name is being included in the same list with members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, that’s a good thing.

A “Great Coaches” Quiz

December 1st, 2008 - 3:12pm by jim_saccomanoOther posts by jim_saccomano

I thought I might post a short blog that is in the form of a quiz question, with the answer to post in a day or so.

There is a former National Football League head coach who had as his offensive coordinator and as his defensive coordinator two men who both went on to be head coaches themselves.

So far, that could apply to a number of teams and coaching staffs.

But in this very rare case, all three coaches were inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

What was the team that had all three on staff, and who were the three coaches?

There is a reason behind the question, which will be given as part of the answer.

Seven Broncos Among Hall of Fame Class of 2009 Nominees

October 28th, 2008 - 3:03pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by Gray Caldwell

Gary Zimmerman just entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame in the Class of 2008.

The class of 2009 has seven former Broncos among the 133 players, coaches and contributers who make up the preliminary list of nominees for election to the Hall of Fame’s newest class.

Former Denver Broncos S Steve Atwater (1989-98), RB Terrell Davis (1995-2002), LB Tom Jackson (1973-86), LB Karl Mecklenburg (1983-94), Head Coach Dan Reeves (1981-92), TE Shannon Sharpe (1990-99, 2002-03) and CB Louis Wright (1975-86) are the Broncos who made the preliminary list of modern-era nominees.

Sharpe is one of 11 first-year eligible nominees for election into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, meaning this is the first year he met all of the requirements for induction — meaning he’s been retired at least five years.

Broncos Could Be in Good Hall Era

February 7th, 2008 - 9:03am by jim_saccomanoOther posts by jim_saccomano

One of the most gratifying moments of Super Bowl week for fans of the Denver Broncos was the announcement that tackle Gary Zimmerman had been selected for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Zim is absolutely one of the greatest offensive linemen in pro football history, as his selection to the all-decade teams of both the 1980’s and the 1990’s clearly attests.

He had to wait a couple of years longer even than he should have, but there is no question that the voters got it right in naming him to the game’s most hallowed halls.

As great as the news was about Zimmerman, it was just as disappointing that all-time great Randy Gradishar did not get selected.

Super Bowl/Hall of Fame

February 6th, 2008 - 5:10pm by mark_cooperOther posts by mark_cooper

Well I’ve been eating crow all week and finally decided to admit it. The New York Giants brought it and were the better team by far. I was amazed how flat the Patriots were and we talked about the Super Power all year long and BOOM!!! — they explode.

I can’t understand how you play so emotionless in a Super Bowl. I’m not a Giants fan by any means for selfish reasons, they cost me a World Championship ring and we ran out of time in Super Bowl XXI, that’s all. :o)

Ahhhhh, they were the better team that day too and Phil Simms made a career day out of one game. Can you tell I’m still bitter, yep!!
