Inside the Combine with Xanders

March 1st, 2012 - 2:33pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

From the Broncos’ suite at Lucas Oil Stadium, General Manager Brian Xanders sat down with DenverBroncos.com to discuss the 2012 NFL Combine last Sunday.

He touched on a variety of subjects, including the familiarity that he, Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway and Head Coach John Fox have with each other now.

Xanders called the group’s second combine together “pretty similar,” with the exception that this year there’s more stability in the coaching staff.

“Last year the coaches were all newly hired,” Xanders said. “Then we had quick evaluations for free agency for three weeks, then we left for the combine. This year we had more time.”

Even new Defensive Coordinator Jack Del Rio had nearly a month after being hired to evaluate last season’s games so he had a solid grasp on the Broncos before heading to the combine.

In addition, the front office had meetings in December to talk about prospects’ character, and the coaching staff got involved for February meetings. Xanders said those meetings, just before the combine, serve as a “base of knowledge” for the coaches.

Prepping for Free Agency

February 17th, 2012 - 10:16am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

The NFL Scouting Combine is just around the corner, but the Broncos front office is also hard at work preparing for the free agent market.

Free agency begins on March 13, and General Manager Brian Xanders said Denver has a plan on how to attack the signing period.

“We plan to be aggressive and smart at the same time and try to get some good signings in here, some valued signings that help contribute to wins,” Xanders said. “We also have to address signing our own unrestricted free agents, and we also have the free agency market. So we will have a plan for that. We have a long term vision, too.”

The team’s list of potential unrestricted free agents is as follows:

Personnel Department in Preparation Mode

February 6th, 2012 - 9:29am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

With the Senior Bowl and other college all-star games in the rearview mirror, General Manager Brian Xanders and the rest of the personnel staff have their sights set on the NFL Scouting Combine.

But before the staff heads to the yearly event, the Broncos will have internal draft meetings to make sure everyone — including the coaching staff — is fully prepared.

“For example, our defensive line coach will get to see all the defensive linemen top to bottom quickly on tape, and we’ll read the character and the evaluation,” Xanders said of the draft meetings. “It gives them a first exposure before they go down to the NFL Scouting Combine.”

Xanders Talks Senior Bowl

January 27th, 2012 - 2:36pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

Back from Mobile, Ala., for the Senior Bowl, General Manager Brian Xanders sat down to discuss his scouting trip to the annual college all-star game.

Xanders, the personnel staff and the coaching staff were all in Mobile from Monday to Wednesday, and the team is now working toward the NFL Scouting Combine.

Why is the Senior Bowl an important part of draft preparation?
“First of all, for our scouts, it’s a great opportunity to meet and interview players for the first time. When they’re on campus, they’re playing football and they’re going to school. But this is a great chance to meet them one-on-one. We get in on Sunday morning and then really chase down players, assigned by scout, and we interview them on all of the questions that we have on their background, football character and personal character.

“The second reason is it provides the first live exposure for a lot of our coaches. They can see the velocity of the football, to see them catch, to see them compete against good players, to see them in person, their body types, see how they work and compete in groups.”

Xanders on 53-Man Roster

September 3rd, 2011 - 2:50pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

Earlier Saturday, the Broncos trimmed the roster to 53 players by waiving or releasing 24 players and putting three more on injured reserve.

The decision-making process began with the coaches and front office staff watching tape of the Arizona preseason game yesterday then meeting with Head Coach John Fox and Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway at about 4 p.m. for two-and-a-half hours, going over the roster position-by-position.

This morning, players set to be waived or released got the news by first meeting with General Manager Brian Xanders, then Coach Fox before saying goodbye to position coaches, the training and equipment staffs and their teammates.

This afternoon, Xanders spoke with the media about what he called “Emotionally, one of the toughest (days) of all.”

“When you bring 27 guys in and look at them in the eye, you’re ending an NFL dream, and it’s tough,” Xanders said. “It’s just something that’s part of the business.”

Xanders on Free Agency

June 29th, 2011 - 9:20am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

Before the coaches and personnel staff left for vacation, General Manager Brian Xanders said the club is ready for free agency.

We thought we’d ask him to delve a little deeper into the club’s preparation, and below is what the general manager had to say.

On being ready for free agency since December:
“We have internal boards and rankings we’ve worked on since December. We’ve actually been ready for it since December. But we’ve watched it over and over in January, February and May. We’ve gone through and cleansed the board. What was interesting was having the draft before free agency, which changed the specific team needs. For example, if we draft three linebackers and we feel good about our group of nine linebackers for camp, it wouldn’t make sense to go out and sign a big-time money free agent at linebacker. What that did is the draft filled in some team needs before free agency at a different pricing level.”
