Broncos History From ‘Hoagy’

Broncos TV

Al “Hoagy” Carmichael started his career playing for some of the most distinguished football programs in the country.

After spending time with the Marine Corps and playing service football, he competed collegiately at the University of Southern California, where he played in the same backfield as Frank Gifford. He even caught the winning touchdown in USC’s 7-0 win against Wisconsin in the 1953 Rose Bowl. From there, he went on to spend six years playing for the Green Bay Packers, a franchise typically referred to as the first dynasty of the NFL. He is now part of the Packers Hall of Fame.

Then in 1960, Carmichael joined the Broncos, taking what some would consider a step down at the time — moving onto a brand new team in an upstart league.

But Carmichael felt otherwise, and wouldn’t have had it any other way.

“If I had to do it again, I would do it again, because I think it was one of the greater things I experienced, being on a new team, starting out in a whole new league,” he said. “Not everybody gets that opportunity. I feel real honored being a member of that 1960 team.”

Mingo Named Honorary Captain

October 7th, 2009 - 3:13pm by Zach EisendrathOther posts by

The Broncos on Wednesday morning held a press conference at Dove Valley to announce that Gene Mingo — one of the most versatile players in club history — will be the team’s honorary captain for Week 5′s Legacy Game against the Boston Patriots.

Having Mingo, of all players, be the team’s honorary captain for the game holds much significance.

On Friday night, Sept. 9, 1960, the Broncos and Patriots squared off in the first-ever American Football League game, and Mingo made his mark on that contest — recording the first-ever punt return for a touchdown in AFL history to help the Broncos squeeze out a come-from-behind, 13-10 victory in Boston.

With the game hanging in the balance, Mingo can still recall catching the ball at his own 24-yard line and slicing his way downfield for the 76-yard touchdown like it was yesterday.

“When it came time for me to be back there for that punt, I can visualize it right now, right here, how I caught it,” he said. “I made a couple steps to my left, went up the field a little bit, cut back to the right and the blocking was just perfect going down the sideline.”

Lots of Characters in 50 Years – Gene Mingo

March 10th, 2009 - 10:10am by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

Continuing with the theme of taking a look back at some of the guys who were Denver Broncos back in the day, Gene Mingo is a gentleman who occupies a unique position not just in Bronco history but in the annals of all professional football.

Mingo was unique and accomplished on several levels.

An Ohio native who did not play college football, Mingo was a high school star who continued to play in the United States Navy during a time when many military bases had excellent teams and service football was very competitive, often at the college level.

But in the late 1950′s just as now, players who did not go to college had virtually no future in pro football.

However, sometimes ability and time combine to create opportunity, and such was the case for Mingo when the American Football Legue was formed in 1959, with the first season of play slated for 1960.

The Broncos were among the cheapest and most hardscrabble of teams, looking at any and all players that they could get on a “cost effective basis,” and they took a look at the young Navy veteran.

Broncos-Chargers Always Interesting

October 3rd, 2007 - 10:00am by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

Some of the most interesting things in Denver Broncos history have happened against the Chargers, and while all these facts are readily available and thus no new information is presented here, I do think it is notable to consider a few things that have happened over the previous 47 years of play.

Tobin Rote was the Chargers quarterback when they began in 1960, in Los Angleles, and he actually ended his great career as a part-time player for the Broncos.

The only time Denver has ever scored 50 points in a game in franchise history was in 1962 against the Chargers.  John McCormick was the quarterback and Gene Mingo kicked five field goals for the Broncos in that game.

And in spite of having some of the league’s greatest offensive teams in the John Elway years, the Broncos have never again scored 50 points in a game.

Of the 17 shutouts the Broncos have ever posted in a Bronco win, a franchise high six have come against the Chargers.

And of the nine times when the Broncos have failed to score in a game, three of those have been recorded by the Chargers, also a Denver high.

So the Chargers have been involved in nine of the 26 total Bronco shutout games.  Just an oddity.
