Personnel Department in Preparation Mode

February 6th, 2012 - 9:29am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

With the Senior Bowl and other college all-star games in the rearview mirror, General Manager Brian Xanders and the rest of the personnel staff have their sights set on the NFL Scouting Combine.

But before the staff heads to the yearly event, the Broncos will have internal draft meetings to make sure everyone — including the coaching staff — is fully prepared.

“For example, our defensive line coach will get to see all the defensive linemen top to bottom quickly on tape, and we’ll read the character and the evaluation,” Xanders said of the draft meetings. “It gives them a first exposure before they go down to the NFL Scouting Combine.”

From Undrafted to Impact Players

July 26th, 2011 - 10:05am by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

With the National Football League calendar year underway for 2011, there will be a flurry of player transactions almost like never before.

The only real comparison I can make is when the teams signed replacement players in 1987, thus putting an entire team together in a couple of days.

I figure that with the Denver Broncos’ signing of our own draft choices, undrafted college free agents, veteran free agents, possible trades and roster reductions re cuts, the Broncos will average a headline per hour for the next five or six days, basing that on the hours of a normal daylight working day.

It is going to be chaotic.

For a fan, stay tuned, and embrace the chaos. The football operations department has had a plan in place and will now be executing it.

As part of the new collective bargaining agreement, teams can start negotiations with free agents beginning at 8 a.m. tomorrow. Starting at 4 p.m. on Friday, July 29, teams can sign or extend offer sheets to the players.

In other words, free agency is about to kick off. So without further adieu, here’s an exhaustive look at the players that will be available. Below you’ll find the unrestricted free agents, organized by their old team. For a look at restricted free agents, franchise players and all other types of “available” players, read the full NFL press release here.

Granted the length of the list can be a little overwhelming, but see if you can pick out some of the names you think the club will take a look at.

Xanders on Free Agency

June 29th, 2011 - 9:20am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

Before the coaches and personnel staff left for vacation, General Manager Brian Xanders said the club is ready for free agency.

We thought we’d ask him to delve a little deeper into the club’s preparation, and below is what the general manager had to say.

On being ready for free agency since December:
“We have internal boards and rankings we’ve worked on since December. We’ve actually been ready for it since December. But we’ve watched it over and over in January, February and May. We’ve gone through and cleansed the board. What was interesting was having the draft before free agency, which changed the specific team needs. For example, if we draft three linebackers and we feel good about our group of nine linebackers for camp, it wouldn’t make sense to go out and sign a big-time money free agent at linebacker. What that did is the draft filled in some team needs before free agency at a different pricing level.”

Prep Time Matters in Free Agency

March 5th, 2010 - 9:20pm by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

Now that all the National Football League teams are into full blown free agency for 2010, I would like to point out a small factor that really is not so small for the Denver Broncos.

Every part of every season happens each year, from the games themselves to the off-season creation of the team. We all know that during the season, with the exception of the bye week, each team has a week to prepare for its game, and the game comes on Sunday (or Monday) whether you are ready or not. So sometimes, due to injuries or other unforeseen events, like the weather, a team can only get so ready. But it has to play on Sunday no matter how ready it is, so the value of and proper use of preparation time is vital.

So too is the off season player acquisition phase of the business.

Both Head Coach Josh McDaniels and General Manager Brian Xanders are very meticulous and organized men with a great passion for what they do.

2010 Free Agency Blog

March 4th, 2010 - 5:54pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

The free agency period officially got underway at 10:01 p.m. MST on Thursday, so check back with this blog all day for free agency news from across the league, and any official Broncos signings that come across our desk.

8:57 a.m. MST: Wow, you guys have been busy in the comments. Love to see it. All right, time to play some catch-up from the first night/morning of free agency. This early in the game it’s a little hard to tell what’s official and what’s just a bit of speculation, but let’s get started.

  • We do know a couple notes from within the division. First, the Chargers have traded cornerback Antonio Cromartie to the New York Jets. The Jets have confirmed the trade on their site, and sources say it will include a 2011 draft pick — potentially a third-rounder that could turn into a second-rounder — heading to the Chargers.
  • Another note from the Chargers — they have released veteran defensive tackle Jamal Williams and running back Michael Bennett. On the Jets’ side of things, New York has released cornerback Lito Sheppard.
  • One of the bigger names among the available free agents on defense was Colts linebacker Gary Brackett. Well, it appears Brackett will remain a Colts linebacker after agreeing a new deal.
  • It appears the Lions have been active as the new league year has gotten underway. It has been reported that the team has agreed to a deal with free agent receiver Nate Burleson. In addition, apparently the Lions and Browns have worked out a trade that will send defensive tackle Corey Williams to Detroit. And finally, Kyle Vanden Bosch is apparently saying he and the Lions have worked out a deal in free agency.
  • 9:10 a.m. MST: Some Broncos news just came across our desk: Brandon Lloyd and Russ Hochstein have agreed in principle to re-sign with the team. Terms will not be released, but we’ll have more on this later.

    NFL Collective Bargaining agreement Q & A

    March 4th, 2010 - 10:35am by mark_cooperOther posts by

Back from a little hiatus. I’ve been interviewing, hired and am training a new assistant here at the office. Jan-Feb and this month have been busier in the local real estate and mortgage market than I’ve seen in the last three years, so hopefully that’s the beginning of the recovery I’ve been seeing in different parts of town.

On the NFL front, I have to admit even I’ve been confused about this agreement, so I’m posting a 20 question and answer session to hopefully help us all understand. I found this on another website to help explain what is going on.

    Q. Why is the salary cap going away?

Since the early 1990s, the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the NFL and the players’ union consistently has included a final year in which the salary cap disappears. The goal of the provision was to encourage the parties to get a new deal done more than a year before the current arrangement expires.

Previously, the strategy has worked. At no other time has the NFL even come within a year of an uncapped season. In 2006, the league and the union negotiated a new deal on the eve of the last season with a salary cap.

So this development and most if not all of its peculiar consequences have been contemplated for nearly two decades. Before now, however, no one wanted the cap to go away.

    Gearing Up

    February 21st, 2010 - 8:53pm by mike_riceOther posts by

The time is drawing close. The several weeks of calm that hits the NFL after the Super Bowl is about to give way to a flurry of activity with free agency, the draft and mini-camps.

While the Broncos gear up, let’s take a look at what has happened to this point and what might come.

First, the Broncos have solidified their coaching staff. The biggest change came at defensive coordinator. Out is Mike Nolan; in is Don Martindale, the team’s linebackers coach a year ago.

On the one hand, I was sorry to see Coach Nolan go. Clearly there were some issues between head coach Josh McDaniels and Nolan. While some people like to read into such a parting, to me this is a merely routine occurrence in the ever-changing world of the NFL. Sometimes two people see things differently. Such seems to be the case here.

    Taking Stock

    March 9th, 2009 - 11:48am by mike_riceOther posts by

The initial flurry of free agent activity has subsided and the Broncos were as active as any team in the NFL. Their list of acquisitions looks like an oversized draft class. They signed players at a variety of positions, which is good because the Broncos have a variety of needs.

Here are some thoughts about the Broncos’ moves in free agency. Keep in mind that I am an optimist and look for the bright side of things.

    RUNNING BACK

I like what the Broncos did here. They brought in experienced NFL players Correll Buckhalter, J.J. Arrington and LaMont Jordan. Add them to a group of young backs including Peyton Hillis, Ryan Torain, Selvin Young and Andre Hall and the Broncos will have plenty of options once training camp starts.

They simply had to bring in some guys who have produced in the NFL. They accomplished that. When Coach McDaniels was in New England, the Patriots used several running backs instead of one workhorse back. I can see the Broncos using the same philosophy at running back in 2009. If they do, they’ll have some good candidates from which to choose.

I think Buckhalter, Arrington and Jordan can and will be productive, assuming all are on the team in September when the regular season opens.

And let’s not forget that Hillis showed he is an NFL-caliber player in 2008 and Torain showed flashes of good play in his short time on the field before injuring his knee.
