Remembering Fred Gehrke

Let’s take another step back today to look at another fantastic moment that could only have happened back in the day.

We are once again going to revisit one of the most story-laden franchises and times in pro football history, the remarkable Los Angeles Rams of the late 1940′s and early 1950′s.

The source of this little known episode in pro football is from the horse’s mouth-in this case, the general manager of the horses. I was hired by General Manager Fred Gehrke of the Broncos in 1978 and we became very close over the years.

Pro Football’s “Dirtiest Player”

That is not really a moniker that one would want to be attached to, but from 1948 through 1960 it was commonly used in reference to Hardy Brown.

Hardy Brown ended his career with the Denver Broncos in the 1960 inaugural season, playing defensive back and linebacker with his 6-0, 193-pound frame.

Before coming to Denver Brown had moved around a lot, earning his nickname of “thumper” at every stop.

All Bronco fans are aware that quarterback John Elway is the only Bronco in the Hall of Fame, in terms of players who made their marks in Denver.  And it is no great secret that many of us have frequently stated frustration with that fact.

However, there are others with Denver connections in the Hall, including cornerback Willie Brown, who started his pro career as a Bronco, and running back Tony Dorsett, the Dallas great who ended his career in the Mile High City.

But there is another with a big Denver connection, and he was a man I was honored to work for, and will always be proud to have called him a friend.
