Manning to Wear No. 18

March 20th, 2012 - 12:24pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

With the news that Peyton Manning officially agreed to terms with the team on Tuesday, talk quickly turned to what number the quarterback will wear.

No. 18, which he has worn for his 14-year NFL career, is retired in Denver in honor of Ring of Fame quarterback Frank Tripucka, an original Bronco.

Tripucka spoke with Manning on the phone Tuesday morning, however, and offered to bring his number out of retirement for the newest Bronco.

“I had the privilege of speaking with Peyton Manning this morning, and I let him know that I would be honored if he wore No. 18 for the Denver Broncos,” Tripucka said. “I have admired Peyton for a long time. He is one of the all-time greats, and having him wear the same jersey that I did brings me a lot of joy. I can’t wait to see him in No. 18.”

Manning will meet the media at approximately 1 p.m. MDT in his official introduction as a Bronco.

Saccomano: By the Numbers: 18

I thought it might be fun to have a series of blogs (and, since it’s my blog, whatever I think might be fun seems pretty likely to find its way into print) on Broncos by the numbers.

The team has just completed 50 years of play, a milestone in any franchise history, and over that time a lot of players have made contributions, large and small, to what the Broncos are. It’s like family members, some more accomplished than others but when you are in a family, you are in for keeps. So too for the Broncos. Once a Broncos, always a Bronco.

Those players have worn a lot of numbers over the years, and we are going to take a look, over time, at various uniform numbers.

In the entire 51-year history of the Denver Broncos every jersey number has been worn at least one time. This is an unusual fact because it includes number “0″. As we have discussed in previous “By the Numbers,” the Broncos had a number “0,” fullback Johnny Olszewski, back in 1962. But he is the only player ever to wear “0″. Interestingly, number “18″ also has been worn just once ever, and it was by a teammate of Johnny O’s, albeit someone far more famous and accomplished in the Mile High City.

I Remember the Titans (the New York Titans)

On Thanksgiving Day, I suspect that even the most football crazed fan (I think I have accurately captured Broncos fans with this description) is thinking more about turkey than this blog.

However, just on the odd chance that you are giving it a quick read, I thought Thanksgiving Day football would be a legitimate topic.

And on that score, I remember the Titans.  No, not the fine Denzel Washington movie, and not the Tennessee Titans whom the Broncos defeated Monday night, but the original football Titans, the New York Titans of the American Football League.

Those lucky enough to have watched the AFL—and I am certainly among that group–will love it forever.

It was a wild and crazy offense minded league that gave us a tremendous rush of offensive football, changing the way many fans looked at the sport and the way those fans wanted to watch it in the future.
