Armstrong Gets Call to College Hall of Fame

May 15th, 2012 - 3:14pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

UPDATE: Armstrong was inducted into the Hall on Tuesday, Dec. 4.

When Otis Armstrong came to Denver as a first-round pick in 1973, he said he was just looking to follow in fellow running back Floyd Little’s footsteps.

On Tuesday, it was announced that Armstrong has done just that, joining his former Broncos teammate in the College Football Hall of Fame in the Class of 2012.

“It means a lot to me,” Armstrong said. “When you go into the College Football Hall of Fame, that’s one of the highest honors you can achieve. I’m very, very honored.”

Armstrong attended Purdue, first flashing his potential as a sophomore in 1970. He set the school season record for rushing yards with 1,009 — just the second running back in school history to top the 1,000-yard mark.

For his career, Armstrong rushed 670 times — a school record — for 3,315 yards, which ranks second in Purdue annals. He also ranked third in career kickoff return average and was one of just two players to return more than one kickoff for a touchdown.

But as far as Armstrong is concerned, there’s one game that stands out above all others.

Draft is a Foundation for Success

February 15th, 2011 - 11:19am by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

One of the things that has been emphasized over the years in the National Football League is that the annual player selection draft is a vital building block to a successful organization.

This year’s Super bowl champions, the Green Bay Packers, did a great job with a roster heavy on players selected in the draft.

The Denver Broncos have had that same type of success when we have had our greatest teams, and there is no question that the Broncos understand and respect that concept. This year the Broncos have the second pick in the entire draft and six selections overall. Three of the Broncos’ choices fall in the first 50, but later round selections can make a big impact as well.

An Orange Sunday History Lesson

October 12th, 2010 - 11:15am by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

As one can see just by coming onto DenverBroncos.com, this week’s game against the New York Jets has officially been proclaimed Orange Sunday by Mayor John Hickenlooper.

The Denver Broncos organization is encouraging all fans to wear orange to the game. Broncos players will be wearing the team’s alternate orange jerseys this week, and all fans in attendance will receive an Orange Sunday rally towel, courtesy of U.S. Bank.

There will be a pep rally Friday, cheerleaders, alumni, food, drink, festivities and an “Orange Ride” encouraging fans to ride their bikes to a pregame tailgate party. The mayor will deliver the game ball on his bike, and it will be orange all over.

So, you think you know all about Orange Sunday?

Little highlights flash over the giant Thundervision screens, and Little is on the field to receive the honor. Check back soon for coverage of the second half.

Q3 15:00: Eddie Royal is lined up deep to receive Pat McAfee’s kickoff, and he kneels the ball for a touchback. Kyle Orton lines up under center, and he’s sacked by Robert Mathis before he can get off the pass. On second-and-16, Orton completes a pass to Lloyd for 17-yards and a first down.

Moreno, Harris Out

September 24th, 2010 - 1:06pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

Head Coach Josh McDaniels announced Friday morning that Knowshon Moreno and Ryan Harris will not suit up for this Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts. They are listed as out on the injury report.

Harris had been listed on the injury report this week with an ankle injury. He practiced on a limited basis on Wednesday, but didn’t practice Thursday or Friday.

Moreno wasn’t on the injury report initially, but McDaniels said that he “just sustained a little something that we won’t be able to play through this week, yesterday.” He didn’t practice Friday.

In his stead, Andre Brown, Correll Buckhalter and Laurence Maroney are all ready to step up on Sunday.

“In this business, you can’t expect anything,” said Maroney, who had full participation on Thurdsay and Friday despite a thigh injury. “I know one thing — I’m going to be prepared for whatever comes my way, whatever Josh (McDaniels) asks of me.”

McDaniels said he is hopeful that both Champ Bailey (foot) and Andre’ Goodman (thigh), who both practiced for the first time this week on Friday, will suit up on Sunday.

“They both want to play, and I think they’re getting closer to being ready and able to,” he said.

Both cornerbacks are listed as questionable.

As for the rest of the injury report, Chris Kuper (knee) and Wesley Woodyard (hamstring) are listed as questionable, and Maroney and Darcel McBath (forearm) are probable.

For the Colts, Anthony Gozalez, Ramon Humber and Bob Sanders are listed as out for Sunday’s game. Joseph Addai, Charlie Johnson, Clint Session, Pierre Garcon, Brandon King and Eric Foster are questionable. Gary Brackett, Jeff Saturday and Jerraud Powers are probable.

Charley Johnson Honored in Full Cycle Week

September 23rd, 2010 - 11:13am by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

Sometimes there is so much going on, it is very difficult to tie a bow around it. This is about Charley Johnson, but sometimes a topic is about a lot of things, all at once.

While the terrible tragedy of Kenny McKinley’s passing casts a pall over Broncos Country, we are in a seven-day period that takes us full cycle and ties things together.

Last week the team played its home opener and won, with the end zones painted like those of the 1960’s—a great tribute that will remain all year.

A Huge Success

August 9th, 2010 - 9:10am by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

This weekend has been a great one for the entire Denver Broncos organization, its legions of fans and for the inimitable Hall of Fame running back Floyd Little.

The team’s open practice at INVESCO Field sat Mile High was a huge success, drawing over 20,000 rabid fans who enjoyed all aspects of the open practice, according to those who were there — I could not attend because I was in Canton, Ohio, at that time watching Floyd Little being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

His induction speech played on the Thundervision scoreboard at the stadium, and several thousand fans stayed after the practice to watch it.
