First Half Recap

December 11th, 2011 - 3:34pm by Max HensonOther posts by

We’ve got a defensive battle here today between the Broncos and Bears.

The first half has come to an end and it’s still scoreless, with both defenses controlling the game.

The Denver defense hasn’t allowed a third down conversion, with Chicago 0-for-5 in that category and the Bears have been limited to just 84 total yards of offense. D.J. Williams has two sacks and Chris Harris nearly came up with an interception in the closing moments of the half.

Offensively, the Broncos have amassed 135 total yards and they set up Matt Prater for a 28-yard field goal attempt. But the Bears blocked Prater’s effort at the 7:27 mark of the second quarter to keep the game tied 0-0.

It’s the eighth time in team history the Broncos and their opponent have been scoreless at half and Denver is 5-2 in those games.

Denver has outgained Kansas City 169-72, with all of those yards coming on the ground with the Broncos read-option running attack. Six different players have carried the ball for the Broncos, with Knowshon Moreno leading the pack with 52 yards. Moreno and starter Willis McGahee were injured early in the game however, making Lance Ball the only healthy running back for the Broncos. He’s taken the duty in stride, leading the team with 12 carries for 47 yards.

On the other side of the ball, the Broncos shutout the Chiefs in the first half, the first time the defense has done that this season, but the 96th time Denver has done that in its history. In that situation, the Broncos are an NFL-best 28-1 since 1994. In this game, the defense has held Kansas City to an average gain of just 2.8 yards per play, compared to 5.3 for Denver’s offense, and have sacked quarterback Matt Cassel three times. They’ve also prevented the Chiefs from moving the ball as Kansas City is just 1-for-6 on third down.

Sharing the Ball

November 13th, 2011 - 1:16pm by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

Six Broncos have carried the ball in the first half for the Broncos, matching the most rushers in a game this year for the team. Against Green Bay, Eric Decker caught a wide receiver screen that was ruled to be thrown backwards, making it a rushing attempt in the official gamebook.

Tim Tebow, Willis McGahee, Knowshon Moreno, Lance Ball, Spencer Larsen and Eddie Royal have each run with the ball so far today. Larsen has three carries, which represent a career high for the fullback and Royal has two – one off his career mark.

McGahee started the game with four carries for 17 yards (4.2 avg.) before leaving with a hamstring injury. Moreno came in and carried four times for 52 yards (13.0 avg.) before leaving with a knee injury.

Since then, it’s been Ball seeing time as the featured back, with additional runs by Tebow, Larsen and Royal.

The sextet has been effective, combining for 162 yards on 26 carries (6.2 avg.) so far.

Broncos vs. Lions: First Half Recap

October 30th, 2011 - 3:46pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

After a successful first drive, the Broncos offense wasn’t able to get much going in the first half.

The team is 0-for-7 on third downs, and has four three-and-outs on seven drives. The seventh drive featured an unsuccessful fourth-down conversion as Tim Tebow simply threw the ball high in the air out of bounds to run the clock down to halftime.

Tebow is 4-for-13 for 37 yards and has been sacked three times.

The team’s leading rusher is Lance Ball, who has two carries for 37 yards. Knowshon Moreno has chipped in 27 yards on the ground, and Tebow has rushed four times for 15 yards.

The Lions outgained the Broncos 274 yards to 79 in the first half.

The Denver defense sacked Matthew Stafford twice in the first half.

Stafford is 16-for-22 for 191 yards and two scores, good for a quarterback rating of 129.2 yards.

The Lions lead the game 24-3, having scored 24 consecutive points after the Broncos’ opening-drive field goal.
