Elway Discusses Defense, McGahee

November 20th, 2012 - 5:18pm by Tyler EverettOther posts by

On Tuesday, Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway and Chris Hall of DenverBroncos.com discussed the Broncos’ win over the Chargers, running back Willis McGahee’s injury and the upcoming game against the Chiefs in the latest installment of Elway Access.

With the Broncos’ 30-23 win over San Diego on Sunday, the team improved to 7-3 and took a three-game lead in the AFC West over the Chargers, who fell to 4-6. The victory puts the Broncos in firm control of the division race with six games remaining.

“I think that any time you get a win in this league, you have to be thrilled, especially against a divisional foe,” Elway said. “And if you look at the position we’re in, really being three games up, by winning this it puts us four games up with the tiebreaker on the Chargers with six to play. It was a big game for us to be able to put ourselves in the situation that we were.”

Though San Diego was able to hang around and keep things interesting by cutting the lead to seven with less than three minutes remaining, the Broncos prevailed despite the offense not firing on all cylinders. Elway was pleased with the bottom line, but said the performance left room for improvement.

“I think when you look back, we would have liked to have been able to get this thing over quicker than we did,” Elway said. “But the Chargers kept hanging in there and we had a chance to make some plays offensively, we just didn’t quite hit them. Defensively we played tremendous the first half. And they got it going a little bit in the second half to stay in the football game. These are always lessons learned from wins. This is another situation that we had some chances to close this thing out a little earlier than we did, but weren’t able to do it. We’ll look back and hopefully learn from this and be able to close some people out as we go forward.”

Elway Talks Williams, Chargers

November 13th, 2012 - 10:11pm by Sam DavisOther posts by

Linebacker D.J. Williams has returned to the team, and Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway is confident that Williams has remained in top shape during his time away.

In Tuesday’s episode of Elway Access, hosted by Broncos TV’s Chris Hall, Elway said that Williams “has been working out hard” during the suspension, but it’s still important to ease him back into the game.

“You can only get in football shape by playing football,” Elway said. “That’s why it’s important to work him in there slowly. This time of year, those linebackers take a lot of hits. He is going to be able to give those guys some time and some rest and not take that beating that they take. But we have to work him in there. We can’t give him too many reps. We’ll slowly work him in there and we’ll see how he fits.”

Elway also spoke on another Broncos linebacker during the 30-minute podcast. After a stellar performance against Carolina, linebacker Von Miller garnered praise from the boss.

Elway on Trade Deadline: ‘We Always Look’

October 30th, 2012 - 4:55pm by Sam DavisOther posts by

With the trade deadline two days away after being extended due to the storms on the east coast, Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway described the mindset of his department.

Elway said that it’s “typical action out there,” but added that if an opportunity is presented for Denver to better itself before the deadline, he and his staff won’t shy away.

“There’s not a whole lot even though the deadline has been pushed back,” he said on Tuesday’s weekly Elway Access podcast. “There are always names that surface. We always look at every situation separately and try to figure out if any of those situations can help us as a football team. We’ll continue to monitor that the next couple days and see if anything happens on Thursday.”

Other topics of discussion during the 30-minute show, hosted by Broncos TV’s Chris Hall, included Elway’s thoughts on the Week 8 win against the Saints, the loss of linebacker Joe Mays and the challenge of the Broncos’ upcoming road tilt with the Cincinnati Bengals

Elway called the 34-14 victory at Sports Authority Field at Mile High on Sunday night the “most complete game of the year,” and doled out flattery to each unit as well as several individual performances.

But he was most impressed with the defense’s outing.

Elway: ‘Pedal to the Metal’

October 23rd, 2012 - 11:02am by Sam DavisOther posts by

There were plenty of positives for the Denver Broncos in their Week 6 comeback win at San Diego, and Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway hit on most of them in this week’s episode of Elway Access, hosted by Broncos TV’s Chris Hall.

Coming out of halftime facing a 24-0 deficit, the Broncos marched 85 yards down the field in eight plays, as quarterback Peyton Manning finished the drive with a 29-yard touchdown strike to wide receiver Demaryius Thomas.

That drive, followed by cornerback Tony Carter’s 65-yard scoop-and-score off a fumble, were the two biggest factors in shifting the momentum in Denver’s favor, according to Elway.

Elway Looks for Broncos to Bounce Back

October 9th, 2012 - 6:02pm by Sam DavisOther posts by

In the fifth episode of Elway Access on Tuesday afternoon, Broncos TV’s Chris Hall talked with Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway.

During the 30-minute podcast, Elway spoke on the team’s Week 5 loss at New England as well as the importance of the upcoming divisional showdown with the San Diego Chargers.

First, the Super Bowl winning quarterback talked about a former teammate of his, safety Steve Atwater. It was announced Tuesday that Atwater has been selected into the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame.

“This is an honor well deserved,” Elway said. “I think if you look at what Steve Atwater did for football, what he did for Colorado and the Broncos, he was really one of the first big, big safeties that came into the league and really revolutionized that position. He really was a force back there.”

But Elway believes Tuesday should be one of several post-career accolades that his former teammate garners.

Elway: Week 4 ‘Huge’

September 25th, 2012 - 5:34pm by Sam DavisOther posts by

In the third weekly episode of Elway Access, Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway and Broncos TV’s Chris Hall looked back on the team’s Week 3 loss to the Texans, and then moved forward to the Oakland Raiders.

The Broncos lost at home to the Texans on Sunday afternoon by a score of 31-25 after another comeback attempt fell short.

It was the second time in a row the Broncos fell behind early, and Elway will look for the team to stress consistency – in all quarters of the game – as they prepare for the Oakland Raiders in Week 4.

“The urgency has to be there from minute one like it is minute 55, 56, 57, 58, and (we have to) understand the urgency that it takes to be successful, especially against good football teams,” Elway said. “These last two games were good tests for us to see exactly where we are, and they’ve proven to us that we need to continue to work and get better.”

Houston’s first two touchdowns of the game came on deep pass completions. Discussing those plays, Elway first credited Texans Head Coach Gary Kubiak and his personnel for creating opportunities off the run, in addition to Matt Schaub for throwing two perfect passes.

He also explained that a new, aggressive defense means that it takes a bit for players to become completely acclimated.

“It’s an aggressive defense,” Elway said. “The safeties are involved in the running game a lot of times. We do different things in coverage that it gets complicated at times. We just have to continue to get better at it and also be aware of not trying to give up these big plays.”

Elway also touched on the one-game suspension that linebacker Joe Mays was dealt on Tuesday in response to a hit on Texans quarterback Matt Schaub.

Mays was flagged for the hit, and after the game he apologized to Schaub.

Elway said that purposely injuring someone on the football field just isn’t the type of player Mays is.

“This is a guy that plays the game fast,” Elway said. “He’s a very physical, strong, tough football player. I admire Joe by the way that he plays the game. I also know that Joe isn’t a guy that intentionally goes out there to try and hurt somebody. He was just playing football hard, and unfortunately he caught a piece of Schaub’s helmet with his head.”

While Mays is out against Oakland, it’s a possibility that Denver will welcome back a team captain in guard Chris Kuper, who has been out since suffering a forearm injury on Aug. 14.

“He’ll be practicing and get back into the swing of things this week, so we’ll see how the week goes,” Elway said. “Any time you have a guy that’s a team leader like ‘Kup’ is, it’ll be nice to have him back out there in pads and back involved.”

Looking ahead to the Raiders, Elway called the upcoming game “huge” because it’s a home game for Denver and it’s a divisional contest. He also pointed out that the Broncos haven’t beaten Oakland at home since 2007.

The primary focus for the offense will be on running back Darren McFadden. The Raiders running back has had success against the Broncos in years past, and on Sunday showed that he has fully recovered from a 2011 knee injury with a 113-yard performance that included a touchdown.

“It’s always about stopping the run,” Elway said. “Darren McFadden, no question, is back. He had a 64-yarder last week and is a big-play back. We did a good job against Houston stopping the run later in the game. We’re going to have our hands full with Darren McFadden because he’s one of the top running backs in the league.”

Though the team is coming off two straight losses as it faces Oakland, the way in which the club lost and the quality of the opponents provides Elway with some optimism.

“If we continue to do what we do, and not make the mistakes we’re making, and go play with consistency, then we can beat anybody,” Elway said.

Rod Smith Featured on Gameday Cover

September 22nd, 2012 - 1:04pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

This Sunday, the Gameday program handed out to fans at Sports Authority Field at Mile High doesn’t feature a player on the roster.

Rather, it highlights one of the best Broncos of all time — the team’s newest Ring of Famer, wide receiver Rod Smith.

The cover story — titled “Undrafted, Unmatched” — takes the reader through Smith’s heralded career from an unheralded beginning.

Here’s a snippet from the story:

Despite a standout college career at Missouri Southern State University, Smith went undrafted in the spring of 1994 and signed with the Broncos as a college free agent.

It was Smith’s unyielding work ethic that fueled his unprecedented rise from an undrafted free agent to one of the top receivers in NFL history.
Smith said that because of the way his career began as an undrafted player out of a Division-II school, he always had the mindset that he’d have to work harder than other players for his spot on the roster.

“I knew where I wanted to go and I knew I was going to outwork everyone else,” Smith said. “When they were gone, I was still working. When they were asleep, I was still working. I tell people that all the time — work works. I wanted to be the best teammate I could be. I knew if I was better, it made our team better.

“You have to clock in and sometimes you don’t clock out,” he continued. “In the NFL, I never clocked out. The day I clocked out was the day I retired.”

The program also features an exclusive Q&A with Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway, as well as a coach Q&A with Assistant Special Team Coach Keith Burns. Both were once teammates with Smith.

If you’re headed to the game on Sunday, be sure to grab a program on your way through the gates.

Elway: ‘Ready for the Challenge’

September 18th, 2012 - 4:58pm by Tyler EverettOther posts by

The second episode of the weekly Elway Access podcast is now on DenverBroncos.com, less than 24 hours after the Broncos’ 27-21 Week 2 defeat at the hands of the Atlanta Falcons. With Broncos TV’s Chris Hall hosting, Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway gave his thoughts on Monday night’s game and answered fan questions submitted via Twitter.

After falling behind 20-0 in the first half on the road against a strong team like the Atlanta Falcons, the Broncos fought back to make it a six-point game with less than four minutes to play.

“Number one, any time you turn the ball over like that on the road, even at home, your chances of winning are very slim,” Elway said. “To be able to do that and come back is difficult. Especially going into a place that’s hard to play, and do it in the first quarter.”

Elway: Week 1 Win Exciting, Important

September 12th, 2012 - 2:28pm by Sam DavisOther posts by

Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway and Broncos TV’s Chris Hall premiered the weekly Elway Access podcast on Tuesday afternoon.

It gave fans a chance to submit questions to Elway via twitter, as Elway broke down the Pittsburgh win and talked about the challenges in traveling to Atlanta on Monday night.

In reviewing the team’s Week 1 victory over the Steelers, Elway stressed the importance of the win because of the difficult schedule that lies ahead.

Denver opens up the season with three consecutive playoff teams from 2011. To start off by beating a 12-4 team from a year ago was extremely crucial to the 2012 season, Elway said.

“If we didn’t get off to a good start, who knows where we could have gone,” Elway said. “That’s why it was so important and exciting to be able to win that game.”
