Elway, Russell Talk Heckert, Rookies, Clady in Fan Forum

May 7th, 2013 - 2:24pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

I just finished up moderating a fan forum with Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway and Director of Player Personnel Matt Russell.

Season-ticket holders were able to ask them questions during the hour-long conference call, and it was a pretty fun experience for everyone involved. We’ve held a few fan forums in the past and we’ll hold more going forward this season.

Some of the more interesting notes to come out of the call were Elway’s thoughts on the addition of new Director of Pro Personnel Tom Heckert, Russell’s comments on Ryan Clady and Elway comparing Montee Ball to Terrell Davis.

Below are some quick hits from the fan forum. We’ll have more from the call over the next few days.

Elway on Heckert:

“Well, we’re thrilled to have Tom. He’s a guy that, as you said, he has 20 years of experience in the NFL. He’s got general manager experience, and he really started on the pro (personnel) side. So for him to come in and be our director of pro personnel, he’s going to add a great deal of knowledge on the pro side, as well as player evaluation. So we’re thrilled to have Tom. We think he’s a great addition, and we’re glad he’s with us.”

Russell on the atmosphere in the team’s draft war room:

“We’re prepared. We’ve done our work. We don’t really stress out about our picks; we just go with our board, and like I said, the work’s been done with our area scouts, and we have a great scouting staff, so we go with our board, we look up at the board, and it’s pretty laid-back prior to our pick, and then maybe three or four picks before us, we start to get intense, maybe that’s making trade calls or getting calls from other teams, but we lay back and we try to compose ourselves. We kind of know who we’re going to take when the time comes to pick.”

Elway on RBs: ‘We’ll See What Happens in the Draft’

April 23rd, 2013 - 1:04pm by Andrew MasonOther posts by

When Knowshon Moreno reeled off back-to-back 100-yard games against the Raiders and Ravens last December, it seemed that Willis McGahee, a Pro Bowler just a year earlier, had become a forgotten man among observers while he recovered from a knee injury suffered in a Week 11 win over San Diego.

But in the Broncos’ offices, McGahee was very much in their plans. Had Denver defeated Baltimore in the divisional round, McGahee would have been eligible to come off of injured reserve the following week, having received the one designated-to-return exemption teams were allowed last year. And even though Moreno answered questions about his durability and consistency in his six-game starting stint, he hobbled off the field in the playoff loss with an knee injury.

McGahee never had the chance to return, but as the Broncos look at their pre-draft roster, the 31-year-old running back has a prominent place.

“Well, with where we are right now, with (Willis) McGahee, he is that big back for us right now,” Elway said. “But, I think that if you look at what we have with Ronnie Hillman, he is that 190-pounder, that change-of-pace-type guy.”

Elway on Divisional Round Showdown

January 11th, 2013 - 12:32pm by Tyler EverettOther posts by

This week, Chris Hall of DenverBroncos.com discussed the Broncos’ upcoming playoff opener against Baltimore with Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway in the latest installment of Elway Access.

The Broncos finished the season on an 11-game winning streak for a 13-3 record and the No. 1 seed in the AFC going into the playoffs. It was a year that ranked among the best regular seasons in franchise history, but those accomplishments will mean little if they are not followed by a strong postseason run. The players’ incentive for all their hard work throughout the year boils down to what happens over the next few weeks.

“Playoff football is exciting, that’s what you play for,” Elway said. “That’s what you start working out in March for and go through training camp to get in the position that we are right now.”

Elway Ready for Playoffs

January 3rd, 2013 - 11:04am by Tyler EverettOther posts by

Chris Hall of DenverBroncos.com sat down with Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway on Wednesday for the first playoff installment of Elway Access.

Sunday’s 38-3 win over the Kansas City Chiefs was a big win for the Broncos in a number of ways. Quarterback Peyton Manning established several single-season franchise records and the victory gave Denver a perfect AFC West record of 6-0. More importantly, the team secured the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs and home-field advantage, finishing the season on an 11-game winning streak for a regular-season record of 13-3.

Elway said that before the season, he identified the team’s first six games as a crucial stretch. After the Broncos went 3-3 to start the season, they made steady improvements and got on a roll that led to a finish that exceeded the expectations of even Elway.

December 26th, 2012 - 6:15pm by Tyler EverettOther posts by

Chris Hall of DenverBroncos.com sat down with Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway for the latest episode of Elway Access on Wednesday afternoon.

The week of preparation for Sunday’s Week 17 finale against AFC West rival Kansas City was briefly interrupted for a celebration of Wednesday’s news that a handful of Broncos have been named to the Pro Bowl. Quarterback Peyton Manning, cornerback Champ Bailey and linebacker Von Miller were named starters on the AFC all-star team, which will participate in the 2013 Pro Bowl on Jan. 27. In addition to the three starters, tackle Ryan Clady and defensive end Elvis Dumervil also made the team. Wide receivers Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker, guards Zane Beadles and Chris Kuper, punter Britton Colquitt and special-teamer David Bruton were named alternates.

Elway, Scouts Begin Draft Prep

December 18th, 2012 - 4:58pm by Tyler EverettOther posts by

Chris Hall of DenverBroncos.com sat down with Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway for the latest episode of Elway Access on Tuesday afternoon.

With two weeks remaining in the regular season, the playoffs aren’t the only focus for the organization, as it has begun to look toward the 2013 NFL Draft in April. Tuesday morning, each of the Broncos scouts returned to Dove Valley to begin discussing where the eligible prospects stack up in advance of Thursday, April 25, when Denver will select its newest draft class.

“We’re in the process,” Elway said. “The scouts are in today. They start the meetings this morning. Who’s No. 1? You’ll have to find out later. It’s too early to give you the old who’s No. 1. The scouts will be here this whole week and the first run at the board will be finished by the end of the week. We’ll have 320 guys up on the board that are draftable at this point in time.”

Elway Breaks Down Ravens

December 13th, 2012 - 6:38pm by Tyler EverettOther posts by

On Thursday, Chris Hall of DenverBroncos.com sat down with Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway for the most recent installment of Elway Access.

Since the team’s last game, the Broncos have been able to enjoy some time off to get healthy and ready for the Ravens. Coming off a Thursday night victory in Oakland, the players were off on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, giving them a breather going into the final three weeks of the season. In the win over the Raiders, Denver jumped out to a 13-0 lead en route to a 26-13 victory that came despite some red zone difficulty for the offense. Elway said that win, which improved Denver’s record to 10-3, made the trip to Oakland on a short week well worth the difficulty.

“It’s great now that we got that one over,” Elway said. “The first thing is you have to get through the short week. And we were able to do that, go in there, and even though it wasn’t our best football game, we were able to get in there and get a win. It’s always tough to win on the road, no matter where you go, against one of our archrivals in the Raiders. We were able to go in there, obviously 2-for-7 in the red zone isn’t what we want to do coming out of games. But we were able to get the job done. So once we won that game, then it became the benefit of having the extra weekend.”

Elway Discusses Clinching the AFC West

December 4th, 2012 - 6:16pm by Tyler EverettOther posts by

On Tuesday, Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway sat down with Chris Hall of DenverBroncos.com for the latest installment of Elway Access, where Elway discussed the Bronco’s AFC West-clinching win over Tampa Bay and the team’s outlook going forward.

The Broncos welcomed the Buccaneers to Sports Authority Field at Mile High with a chance to wrap up their division, and did exactly that, taking a 28-10 third-quarter lead and hanging on for the 31-23 victory. A big reason for the win was the team’s ability to stymie Buccaneers running back Doug Martin just one week after giving up 148 yards rushing to Kansas City.

“I think we just concentrated,” Elway said. “We knew we had to stop Doug Martin. They do some good, different things play-action wise. They can throw the ball better than the Chiefs did, so therefore they have a double threat, which makes you able to concentrate a little bit more on the run as we did with Doug Martin. Plus I think everybody was a little bit embarrassed giving up 140 yards rushing against the Chiefs, so it was important to shut him down, and we were able to do that.”
