Looking Ahead, Correcting Mistakes

September 20th, 2012 - 3:39pm by Eric DeckerOther posts by

Let’s get right to it. Our focus right now is on Houston. Obviously we want to learn from our mistakes, and the first step is to eliminate turnovers. If you do that, you move the ball, move the chains, you get into a rhythm and it becomes a lot easier. That’s our main focus, just trying to get into that rhythm. Making plays when they’re there, and obviously eliminate the mistakes.

As far as those mistakes against Atlanta, it’s all correctable, which is a good thing. I thought from film obviously turnovers and decision-making, physical stuff as far as route technique, just technique work across the board. It’s all correctable. You can get better at that. Physically we matched up well. I thought we came back and played well in the second half, we’ve just got to build off that.

I think after a loss you always kind of step back and evaluate your own play, what you can do better. It does make you focus more. I think really our mentality is we’ve got to win, string together some games. That’s what good teams do.

For me, the long pass from Peyton late in the game that I couldn’t bring in, that one is on my mind. I wish I could have that one back. I should’ve made a play on it. Unfortunately I didn’t. But next time I get the opportunity, I’ll make the play.

But like I said, we’re on to Houston. Right off the bat, you know they’ve got a very tough defense. Very sound across the board. We’ve got to play physical, we’ve got to use our technique and we’ve just got to execute every play that’s called. Again, move the chains, eliminate turnovers and stay ahead of, obviously, the chains — no third-and-longs and second-and-longs.

Of course we’re expecting the fans to be out in full force on Sunday. With a big game, second game at home, I know the excitement level’s still there. We’ve just got to feed off that and give them something to cheer about. Hopefully we can use you guys as a 12th man on defense with the crowd noise.

Great Start to the Season

September 13th, 2012 - 3:40pm by Eric DeckerOther posts by

Sunday was a great start to the season. You get some momentum, you beat a great team, it just builds your confidence. There are things that we need to work on, but there’s a lot of stuff that we can build off. I think the excitement level at Sports Authority just shows you what it’s going to be like this season.

In particular, the third quarter against Pittsburgh was crazy. It was the first time I’ve ever seen that, to have the ball for just 36 seconds and then score in the third quarter was a bonus. It just shows the defense was doing the job in the red zone and we were executing offensively and scoring points.

I was on the sideline for DT’s touchdown. I didn’t even hear the play call. All of a sudden I saw a screen pass, an open lane, Zane Beadles got a nice block and then no one’s going to catch DT. That was cool. I was behind it and saw it unfold.

We’ve got another primetime game this week — Monday Night Football. It’s more exciting for friends and family, but it’s fun to show that you’re on the main stage. It’s a test to see if you can play at this level on a stage like this. It is exciting.

I think just the excitement is up because you know it’s Sunday Night Football, it’s Monday Night Football — you grew up as a kid just dreaming of being on that stage. Finally being on it, it’s definitely a lot more exciting, but at the same time we all realize it’s still a football game no matter what time it’s played.

Atlanta’s up next, and they’re another explosive team. We’re going to have to play well in all three phases of the game, special teams, defense and offense. Just make sure we don’t turn the ball over, we stop them, we get explosive plays and we do what we’re supposed to do offensively.

Eric Decker Player Blog

September 6th, 2012 - 2:59pm by Eric DeckerOther posts by

Editor’s Note: This season, DenverBroncos.com will feature two player blogs. Wide receiver Eric Decker will check in with a new post every week. Below is his first entry of the season.

What’s going on, everyone?

This is Eric Decker, and I’m excited to take over a blog this season. I’m going to check in once a week and give you guys a little insight as the season rolls on. I’m going to try to take you behind the scenes as much as I can and answer any questions you have.

It’s fun this time of year, because it’s been a great offseason. Everybody’s been working extremely hard to get to this point. We feel good about this team and we’re excited to kick it all off this Sunday against Pittsburgh.

We’re really counting on you guys to come out to the stadium and make sure we have that home-field advantage.

Pittsburgh’s definitely a tough team, and we’re going to have a test in front of us. But we’re excited for it and we know you guys are excited, too.

What I want to do at the end of each post is make sure to let you know you can ask me questions, and I’ll answer some of them each week next time I write a blog.

What do you want to know?

Looking forward to talking with you every week.

Broncos vs. Seahawks: Quotables

August 19th, 2012 - 12:42am by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

Head Coach John Fox

On QB Peyton Manning’s performance
“I was pretty pleased with the first half. Other than the 0-3 turnover margin, I thought we did pretty good to take the lead 10-9 before the half. You would have liked it to be better as far as the points because we dropped a couple points off with filed position. Again, something to build on and something to get better from.”

On contemplating going on fourth down before the end of the half
“We thought about it but in these games, kind of based on first, you like to have the lead and you like to win when your ones are out there so the more sure thing was the field goal.”

On the defense in the first half
“I thought we were a little shoddier. We came in the game a little light on defense as well and that kind of showed as the game progressed but I think it’s fairly evident we have a lot of work to do in that area.”

Broncos at Bears: Quotables

August 10th, 2012 - 10:51am by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

Head Coach John Fox

On injuries during the game
“Injuries from the game: Danny Trevathan had an ankle sprain, Chris Gronkowski had a groin pull, Chris Clark as well had a groin pull. All three of those left the game. Not serious, but it’s something we’ll manage moving forward.”

On Peyton Manning’s performance
“I thought it was good. It was a very good first outing. There were actually some bright spots all through the offense, defense and kicking game. For a guy that hasn’t played in a season, had some medical issues, I think he’s done outstanding, which you can expect from him. I thought it was very good.”

On Manning’s intercepted pass aimed at Brandon Stokley
“The ball got popped up a little bit, flopped around and their guy made a good play on it. Those things happen. I thought we rebounded pretty well. There were a couple turnovers in the game, probably a few more penalties than either team would like, but very typical of a first preseason game.”

On Manning’s third-down conversion to Eric Decker
“He’s going to continue to improve. So hopefully that’s the whole challenge of our team. It’s a good first start, a good first outing. It’s what we do from it from here on that’s going to count.”

Training Camp 2012: Day Three A.M.

July 28th, 2012 - 12:32pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

A day after lightning forced the Broncos indoors, the weather was once again perfect for a training camp practice Saturday morning.

Under sunny, 80-degree skies, the players donned pads for the first time, and it didn’t take long for the on-field fireworks to start.

This morning belonged to Peyton Manning and Eric Decker, but more on that later.

ROLL CALL

The only player absent from Saturday morning’s practice was safety Quinton Carter, who injured his hamstring late in Friday’s indoor practice. Defensive end Jamie Blatnick was on the field but was held out of practice, Head Coach John Fox said, because of an ankle. Fox also reported that right tackle Orlando Franklin did not finish practice because of a “crick in his neck.”

LINE ‘EM UP

Bannan, who was limited in Thursday’s practice and did not participate in Friday’s session, saw a few first-team reps Saturday morning. He wasn’t on the line full-time, however. When Bannan was out, Mitch Unrein continued to fill his spot at defensive tackle with the first unit alongside Ty Warren.

Chris Kuper seems to be getting closer and closer to a full return to the offensive line, as he saw a handful of reps at right guard during team drills. When he wasn’t in, the position belonged to Manny Ramirez with the first unit.

MANNING TO DECKER

As mentioned earlier, the Manning-Decker connection was on fire Saturday morning. It started during one-on-one drills between wide receivers and cornerbacks.

Decker Poised For Production

July 26th, 2012 - 8:40pm by Sam DavisOther posts by

Veteran cornerback Champ Bailey has stood across from wide receiver Eric Decker in practice for the entirety of the young wide out’s career. As Decker enters his third training camp, Bailey sees “a different person” wearing the same No. 87.

“He’s grown so much,” Bailey said. “He wants to learn. He wants to be the best. I love that about him. The guy is making tremendous strides and I expect him to get better and better every week.”

Decker made a huge stride from his rookie campaign to his second year. In 2010 he made six catches in 14 games. Last year, he jumped to a team-leading 44 receptions and eight touchdown grabs in an offense that set a team record in single-season rushing yards.

Tulowitzki Watches Broncos Practice

June 6th, 2012 - 11:02am by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. – Broncos wide receiver Eric Decker, who played outfield at the University of Minnesota and was drafted by MLB teams twice, hit a pair of home runs when he attended a Rockies batting practice session at the end of April.

Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki did not get as hands-on of an experience as he watched the Broncos practice on Wednesday morning.

“Decker spent some days with us in spring training, so I got to know him a little bit and then Peyton (Manning) was in our clubhouse so I got to spend some time with him,” Tulowitzki said. “So, being on the DL and looking for things to do while the team is on the road, this sounded like a good opportunity to come check it out and support the community and organization.”

Tulowitzki and Decker do have a few athletic accomplishments in common now – both have homered at Coors Field, and both have caught passes from Manning.

Playing with a Full Deck

May 23rd, 2012 - 4:04pm by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

Despite being labeled as a veteran leader among the receivers by fellow wideout Brandon Stokley, in some ways Eric Decker and this year’s rookie class have a lot in common this offseason.

Like this year’s rookies, Decker is going through his first typical NFL offseason.

After he was drafted in 2010, Decker spent his offseason recovering from a foot injury and wasn’t able to participate in OTAs. Last season, there were no OTAs due to the lockout.

Now, Decker is enjoying being out on the field with his teammates working to build on his breakout 2011 campaign.

Decker Surprises Missy Franklin

May 21st, 2012 - 10:28am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

Missy Franklin didn’t expect a thing.

In fact, last Friday, she almost didn’t come to school.

“It was the assembly for the senior gift giveaway,” Franklin said. “I had absolutely no idea that anything was going to happen. I was even thinking about not going to school that day — so my best friend and my mom had devised this whole plan to make sure that I was at school.”

But the Olympic hopeful was in for quite a surprise.

First, she was called up to the front of the assembly, bringing raucous cheers from her classmates.

Then came the big one — Broncos wide receiver Eric Decker entered the room to wish the swimmer luck.

“I had to be here,” Decker told the crowd. “On behalf of the Denver Broncos, I came here to wish her the best of luck this summer, and you better bring back that gold for us. Good luck!”

If the cheers were loud before, they were deafening when Decker arrived.

“I was so shocked,” Franklin said, mentioning that she had met Decker once before at the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame banquet. “As soon as they said his name, all of the girls just went crazy. Eric Decker in a room with 1,000 teenage girls? It just doesn’t get louder than that. I was so excited to see him. I was so happy he was there. And that was honestly one of the nicest things that anyone has done for me. For him to come and take his time right before he had a flight, to come and just say a few words, it meant the world to me.”

Franklin, who is a “huge Broncos fan,” said Decker’s presence even caused a few classmates to bend school rules a bit.

“It’s really funny, my mom was laughing because technically at school our phones are supposed to be in our lockers,” she said. “But she said as soon as he walked in, 500 phones just snapped up to take pictures and video.

“It was great.”
