Elway on Offensive Line, Running Game

November 8th, 2011 - 5:28pm by Kenny LeganOther posts by

The Denver Broncos used a powerful running game to defeat the Oakland Raiders Sunday. The Broncos racked up 299 yards on the ground, with 163 of them coming from running back Willis McGahee. Quarterback Tim Tebow also had a 100-yard day, running for 118 yards, as Tebow and McGahee became the just the fifth quarterback-running back duo in NFL history to each run for 100 yards in the same game.

But while McGahee and Tebow accumulated the stats, Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway said that the real praise goes to the offensive line. On ‘Elway Live‘ Tuesday, Elway told Broncos TV’s Chris Hall that all the success on offense, including with the running game, starts with the big boys up front.

“I think anytime you’re successful on the offensive side it’s all tied to the offensive line,” Elway said. “Those guys are really the unsung heroes and most games are won in the trenches. They did a tremendous job on a very good defensive line. It opened those holes and Tim and Willis took it from there and got the yardage in the secondary.”

Elway said that the offensive line went into Sunday’s game with a chip on their shoulder, due to their performance in the Broncos Week 1 matchup against Oakland. In that game, Denver rushed for a season-low 38 yards while the quarterback was sacked five times.

Before appearing as a guest on the John Elway Show on 9NEWS KUSA-TV tonight, Head Coach John Fox met the Denver Broncos Quarterback Club, the official booster club of the Broncos.

The group has met every head coach in Broncos history, and tonight was the first meeting between the group and Fox.

On the show, Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway said that while the team would hope for a better record, it likes its standing at the halfway point of the season.

“Being a game out, we’re excited to be in that position,” Elway said. “Yesterday was our best football game of the year. The guys played with a bunch of passion and we made a bunch of big plays, which you have to do, especially on the road.

“To beat the Raiders in the black hole was also a very nice feeling.”

Elway on Blitz Pickup, Second Quarter

November 1st, 2011 - 4:07pm by Kenny LeganOther posts by

The Detroit Lions said after Sunday’s game against the Broncos that they went into the game with the plan to put pressure on quarterback Tim Tebow and the Broncos, and they did just that, registering seven sacks. All in all, that brings the total times opponents have sacked Tebow to 13 this year.

However, on ‘Elway Live’ Tuesday, Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway said a lot more goes into blitz pickup than meets the eye, and the responsibility lies with the entire offense.

Three weeks ago against San Diego, the Broncos came up just short in their bid for a fourth-quarter comeback victory.

However, this past Sunday, a late come-from-behind effort was completed as the Broncos erased a 15-point deficit and emerged with an 18-15 overtime win in Miami.

On ‘Elway Live’ earlier today, Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway spoke with Broncos TV’s Chris Hall about the dramatic win.

“It’s a tribute to all 46 guys that were suited up that day,” Elway said. “They never gave up. Everybody contributed.”

“It was nice to finally get over that hump and see the players get rewarded for all their hard work.”

When the Denver Broncos take the field in Miami on Sunday, they will play with five active receivers who each have no more than four years of NFL experience.

The Broncos traded their most senior receiver, Brandon Lloyd, Monday, but Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway spoke about his excitement for the young group of receivers to take the main stage on DenverBroncos.com’s live audio show ‘Elway Live‘ Tuesday.

“We felt it was an opportunity for us to get another draft pick and build, and also with the young guys we have at wide receiver, that they’ll be able to pick up the slack and continue to grow,” Elway said.
