Three Broncos on All-NFL Teams

January 18th, 2010 - 4:09pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

The honors continue to rack up for several Broncos playmakers, as Pro Football Weekly, along with the Professional Football Writers of America, announced their annual All-NFL team today.

Two Broncos made the 2009 All-NFL team — Ryan Clady and Elvis Dumervil — and Knowshon Moreno was voted to the offense of the 2009 All-Rookie team.

Clady and Dumervil were both voted Pro Bowl starters for the first time in their careers, and were recently named Associated Press All-Pros, as well. Moreno finished tied for third in AP Rookie of the Year voting, and Dumervil finished tied for third in AP Defensive Player of the Year voting.

AP All-Pro Trio

After standout seasons at their respective positions, three Broncos were named to the 2009 AP NFL All-Pro Team on Thursday.

First-time Pro Bowl selections Ryan Clady and Elvis Dumervil were named to the AP All-Pro First Team, while teammate Brian Dawkins, who earned his eighth Pro Bowl nod in 2009, was named a second-team All-Pro selection.

“It’s always nice to see your players receive national recognition for their play,” Head Coach Josh McDaniels said. “Ryan, Elvis and Brian are a big part of our football team and certainly proved this past season that they are among the league’s best at their respective positions. I’m happy for them. Defensively, few players in the NFL made as much of an impact as Elvis did, and Brian brought such an attitude to our locker room while continuing to play at the highest level. For Ryan to be named a first-team All-Pro at such a young age is a rare thing for a tackle and speaks volumes for his play.”

Clady, who was named a second-team AP All-Pro as a rookie in 2008, becomes only the fifth offensive linemen since the 1970 merger to be named to the AP All-Pro First Team by his second season in the league.

The other four offensive linemen to accomplish that feat were Anthony Munoz (Cincinnati) in 1981, Willie Roaf (New Orleans) in 1994, Jonathan Ogden (Baltimore) in 1997 and Jammal Brown (New Orleans) in 2006. No tackle has ever received first-team AP All-Pro honors as a rookie.

More Bronco Honors

It is a given and understood by any true fan that an individual honor pales next to team success, but it is still a pleasure to see guys recognized for the hard work, dedication and professionalism which they brought to the Denver Broncos in 2009.

Most recently, The Sporting News on Wednesday came out with its annual all-pro defensive team, and just two teams were represented by more than one player.

One is the Minnesota Vikings, who are poised for and hoping to have a deep playoff run. Defensive end Jared Allen and tackle Kevin Williams of the Vikings both were named.

But the only other team to have more than one player represented on the Sporting News group is Denver, which had both safety Brian Dawkins and Elvis Dumervil named by the publication.

Dumervil Third for Defensive P.O.Y.

January 12th, 2010 - 11:09am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

A nationwide panel of 50 sportswriters and broadcasters who cover the NFL came together to name the Associated Press 2009 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, and Elvis Dumervil tied for third. Packers cornerback Charles Woodson took home the award with 28 votes.

Dumervil led the league in sacks this season with 17, setting a new Broncos single-season record. His 11 sacks on third downs in 2009 tied for the most in a single season since at least 1991, and became the first Bronco to lead the league in sacks, and joined Indianapolis DE Dwight Freeney as the only two players in history to win a sack title at the NCAA-FBS and NFL levels. He finished the 2009 campaign with 49 tackles, three passes defensed, four forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.

Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis (14 votes) came in second for the award behind Woodson, and Saints safety Darren Sharper tied with Dumervil for third with three votes. Vikings defensive end Jared Allen received the final two votes.

Dumervil NFL Alumni Award Winner

January 6th, 2010 - 4:19pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

Elvis Dumervil, fresh off a season in which he led the league and set a Broncos franchise record with 17 sacks, won the NFL Alumni’s award for pass rusher, as voted by former players.

Each former player voted for current players at the positions they once played themselves.

Dumervil finished the season with 49 tackles, four passes defensed, three forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.

He is joined on the defensive side of the ball by Minnesota’s Jared Allen, San Francisco’s Patrick Willis and Green Bay’s Charles Woodson. The offensive recipients of the alumni award were New Orleans’ Drew Brees, Tennessee’s Chris Johnson, Houston’s Andre Johnson, Indianapolis’ Dallas Clark and Minnesota’s Steve Hutchinson. On special teams, Cleveland’s Joshua Cribbs was the recipient, and New Orleans’ Sean Payton was the coaching award winner.

The 2009 awardees will be honored at the 28th Annual Player of the Year Awards Dinner on Feb. 5 in Hollywood, Fla. Each recipient will receive his NFL Alumni Player of the Year Award from a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Five Pro Bowlers Marks Good News

December 30th, 2009 - 9:29am by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

Football is a team game, more than any other, but it is still played by individuals, and this week’s announcement of the 2009 NFL Pro Bowl team had plenty of good news for the Denver Broncos and their fans.

Most seasons, teams have situations in which a player who was deemed worthy by the locals and their fans is omitted from a selection, and that pretty much did not happen this year for the Bronco players most deserving, at least by a statistical measure.

Champ Bailey has been named to his ninth Pro Bowl in 11 seasons, which ties Hall of Famer Mike Haynes for the most in NFL history at the cornerback position. Bailey has been named to the Pro Bowl five times as a Bronco and seems like a lock for the Team of the Decade for the 2000’s, a likely preamble to a Hall of Fame selection for Champ.

Tackle Ryan Clady was named to his first Pro Bowl team and is just the 11th tackle in NFL history to earn a Pro Bowl selection in his first two pro seasons. That takes in a tremendous number of players over the years and is a comment as to the talent and potential which Clady has.

Broncos Finish Strong in Fan Voting

December 22nd, 2009 - 3:59pm by Zach EisendrathOther posts by

Fan voting for the 2010 Pro Bowl came to a close on Monday night, and four Broncos ranked in the top five at their respective positions on the final fan ballot.

Leading the way was Champ Bailey, who finished tops amongst AFC cornerbacks with 443,018 votes. The next highest cornerback, Oakland’s Nnamdi Asomugha, had 287,135 votes to his name.

Meanwhile, Bailey’s secondary counterpart, Brian Dawkins (215,199 votes), finished second among AFC strong safeties, only trailing Pittsburgh’s Troy Polamalu in that category. Rounding things out for the defense was Elvis Dumervil, who ranked in second behind Pittsburgh’s James Harrison at outside linebacker with 273,543 fan votes.

As for special teams, Eddie Royal (117,313 votes) ranked in third amongst kick returners, only behind Cleveland’s Joshua Cribbs and San Diego’s Darren Sproles.

Pro Bowl Voting Update No. 3

December 15th, 2009 - 1:48pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

With just one week of fan voting remaining, there haven’t been any changes in the number of Broncos in the top five at their respective positions for the AFC squad at the 2010 Pro Bowl.

The team has four players in the top five, and of those, one is tops at his position, two are in second and one is in third.

Champ Bailey remains the highest vote-getter among cornerbacks in the AFC. His teammate in the secondary, Brian Dawkins, is No. 2 at the strong safety position behind Pittsburgh’s Troy Polamalu. Elvis Dumervil is second at outside linebacker behind a Steelers player, as well — James Harrison. Eddie Royal rounds out the current list of Broncos in contention for the Pro Bowl, currently third at kick returner behind San Diego’s Darren Sproles and Cleveland’s Joshua Cribbs.

Mobile Foes Set To Square Off

Brady Quinn. JaMarcus Russell. Tony Romo. Tom Brady. Philip Rivers. Ben Roethlisberger. Eli Manning.

Through 11 games this season, those seven quarterbacks have all felt the wrath of an Elvis Dumervil sack.

Come Sunday, Dumervil hopes Matt Cassel will be the eighth signal caller he catches this season. But Cassel’s mobility out of the pocket presents a stiff test.

“He’s a tough guy to bring down,” Dumervil said. “He’s very athletic and I think he does a great job of making plays with his feet and seeing downfield. I think we’ve got our hands full and our work cut out for us this weekend. It’s going to be a great challenge though, so I’m looking forward to it.”
