Attention Focuses on Dumervil

November 12th, 2006 - 9:28am by AndrewOther posts by

DumervilWith seven sacks in the last four games, Elvis Dumervil has quickly become one of the NFL’s most lethal pass-rushing threats. So you’d think that as he watched the Raiders allow nine sacks to the Seattle Seahawks last Monday night — including three in succession during one disastrous first-quarter possession — that the rookie would be licking his chops.

Not so.

“It makes me mad, because now the offensive coordinator (Tom Walsh) is going to put in a max-protection scheme,” Dumervil said.

Even if the Raiders’ pass blocking hadn’t endured such a problematic evening on Nov. 6, it’s likely they would have been tweaking their schemes to account for the rookie’s performance. Dumervil found out first-hand at Pittsburgh that the double-teams that are typcially the purview of his veteran linemates were now directed at him after he got to Ben Roethlisberger for a first-possession sack.

Brandon Done for Year, Injuries Abound

Sam Brandon’s season is over.

A Monday MRI confirmed the Broncos’ worst fears — that the fifth-year safety tore his anterior cruciate ligament on a collision with Demetrin Veal late in Sunday’s 31-20 win at Pittsburgh.

“You could see it happen right in front of you,” Head Coach Mike Shanahan said. “It was just a freak injury and it’s really a shame, because he’s really been playing well.”

Brandon knew immeditately that the injury was severe.

Broncos-Colts: Final Thoughts

October 30th, 2006 - 3:20am by AndrewOther posts by

Closing notes from INVESCO Field at Mile High as the Broncos look to quickly nurse and heal the wounds from their first home regular-season defeat in 23 months …

  • Did the Broncos miss defensive tackle Gerard Warren, who was scratched from the lineup with a sprained ankle? If you ask defensive end Ebenezer Ekuban, absolutely. “Of course you’re going to miss him,” Ekuban said. “He brings certain things to that fron that I think no other guy can get in there and do.”
  • Mike Bell’s jukes and tough yardage, Cecil Sapp’s bursts into the open field and Jake Plummer’s timely scrambles helped the Broncos have their best rushing day of the season to date, with 227 yards on 36 carries. The 227 yards were the Broncos’ most in a loss since they amassed 240 yards in a 31-27 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Dec. 10, 1995. You might remember that as the Glyn Milburn game; he gained an NFL single-game record 404 combined yards that day, 131 coming on the ground.

Back to Lake Erie: Ebenezer Ekuban

Between now and game time, I’ll use this space to focus on each of the six former Browns on the 53-man roster who will return to Cleveland this Sunday.

Ebenezer Ekuban wasn’t in Cleveland quite long enough to really miss the city when he departed — and the fact that he notched a career-high in sacks during his lone season with the Browns demonstrates that he maximized his opportunities in a Cleveland uniform, even as the team lurched to a 4-12 finish in his only season there.

“I didn’t leave there on bad terms,” Ekuban said, citing the fact that he was traded, as a part of the deal that also shipped Michael Myers to Denver while sending running back Reuben Droughns to the Browns. “But still, any time you go against a past team or former teammates that you had, you always want to prove them wrong.”
