Hackney Elevated; Murphy Waived

November 1st, 2008 - 11:15am by Adam ZinserOther posts by

For those of you wondering about the backup quarterback situation, Head Coach Mike Shanahan just announced that Darrell Hackney has been signed from the practice squad to the active roster. He will now be the backup to Jay Cutler.

Shanahan also announced that the team waived tackle Matt Murphy, whom they signed Monday.

The 6-foot-0, 248-pound Hackney has been on the team’s practice squad for the first eight weeks of the season. In 2007, he spent the final eight weeks on the active roster, but he has yet to see action in a regular season NFL contest.

In four games this preseason, including starting the final preseason contest at Arizona, Hackney completed 24-of-38 passes for 285 yards and one touchdown to no interceptions.

Smiles All Around

October 31st, 2008 - 2:57pm by Adam ZinserOther posts by

It’s Friday, so the players didn’t waste any time getting out of Dove Valley to enjoy the weekend before Sunday’s game, but here are some quick notes from the day’s events.

#88 Getting Close: Tony Scheffler was heading out, but some members of the media managed to snag the tight end before he snuck out of the locker room.

“I am feeling a lot better, and it is one of those things when you get a tear in there and you just try and rehab it each day,” Scheffler said. “It is up to the coaches. Obviously I went through practice each day – doing a little bit more each day – and hopefully I can be get out there on Sunday. We have a short week going into next week so it would be good to get out there this weekend.”

He was definitely in a pretty light mood. Before answering the question, he was joking around with CBS4′s Gary Miller, imitating him and predicting the questions he would ask.

Hackney’s Set: With Patrick Ramsey on IR, Darrell Hackney has been preparing to be Jay Cutler’s backup, should the team elect to elevate him from the practice squad to the active roster before Sunday’s game.

“I prepare every week as if I’m going to start the game,” Hackney said. “Now, my role is to be Jay’s backup instead of Patrick Ramsey’s backup. I’m just excited about the opportunity to go out and have a chance to play in a regular season game. Jay and Patrick have helped me. It’s just an unfortunate situation when someone goes down, but I’m in that situation.”

Boss Bailey Out For Season; Injury Updates

October 22nd, 2008 - 12:00pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

Head Coach Mike Shanahan spoke at the podium after practice Wednesday, and he updated the media on the status of several injured Broncos.

Boss Bailey will have microfracture surgery in about a week, ending his season.

His brother, Champ Bailey will be out four-to-six weeks with a groin injury he suffered in the first half of the team’s Monday Night Football contest.

“Champ is a quick healer, but he does have a severe injury, and I think it will be a month for sure,” Shanahan said. “But we’ll just have to wait and see.”

Patrick Ramsey re-injured his elbow in the game against New England, and will be placed on the Reserve/Injured list.

“He kind of hurt that in preseason,” Shanahan said. “I’m not sure if he fully recovered or not because he didn’t take a significant blow, but it was obviously enough that he’s on IR. It’s a setback, but (Darrell) Hackney will come up and get the job done.”

Stopping the Run Essential

October 3rd, 2008 - 4:25pm by Adam ZinserOther posts by

It’s Friday, and we all know what that means. Most people are itching to get out of their workplaces and head home for the weekend.

But that’s not the story at Dove Valley.

For the Broncos, today has been all about making the final preparations for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers — get their gameplan set, know their assignments and fix any problems they may have seen on film. It’s time to get back to their winning ways after last week’s loss. It’s time to refocus.

“You would expect that, because we feel like we missed out last week — we knew we should’ve won that game,” Champ Bailey said Friday. “But we didn’t prepare well enough. I think you kind of stress that during the week, ‘OK, we’ve got to practice harder and prepare harder.’ And I think guys understood that and people stepped it up a little bit.”

Four Signed to Practice Squad

August 31st, 2008 - 3:34pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

On Sunday, the Broncos signed Josh Barrett, Mitch Erickson, Darrell Hackney and Steven Harris to their practice squad.

Barrett is a rookie from Arizona State University, a seventh-round pick in this year’s NFL Draft. He played in all four Denver preseason games in 2008, ranking fourth on the club in defensive tackles and tying for third in special-teams stops.

Erickson is an undrafted rookie out of South Dakota State University. He appeared in all four preseason games for Denver in 2008 following a collegiate career in which he received first-team All-America honors from the Associated Press as a senior at SDSU.

Hackney is a second-year quarterback out of the University of Alabama-Birmingham. He spent the final eight games of the 2007 season on the team’s active roster, and played in all four preseason games in 2008. He completed 24-of-38 passes for 285 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions, good for a 94.7 quarterback rating.

Harris is another second-year player who attended the University of Florida. Harris, who saw time in all four preseason contests for Denver in 2008, played four games for the Broncos in 2007 and totaled six tackles.

The Broncos may have up to eight players on their practice squad.

Practice Quick Hits: 8/27

The Broncos are heading to Phoenix tomorrow in preparation for the team’s final preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals Friday evening. With the starters expected to sit out or see very limited playing time, Second and third team players will take the field trying to earn the team a victory. Quarterback Darrell Hackney spoke to reporters after practice about what his mindset is heading into Arizona.

“It’s just another opportunity to play football –looking forward to showing people what I can do,” Hackney said. “We beat Arizona last year and we are trying to do the same thing this year – just going out there to play and have fun.”

Hackney Gets the Call

November 10th, 2007 - 6:29pm by AndrewOther posts by

With one vacancy on the 53-man roster after the Friday release of Simeon Rice, the Broncos opted to bestow that precious spot upon first-year quarterback Darrell Hackney, promoting him to the primary roster on Saturday.

The move means that the Broncos will actually have 46 players in uniform instead of 45. NFL rules permit teams to dress a third quarterback with the provision that he cannot play until the fourth quarter. If he plays before then, the other two quarterbacks are ineligible to return to action.

Hackney has never before been on a 53-man roster; he spent his rookie campaign in 2006 out of football after the Cleveland Browns waived him at the end of the preseason. Denver signed the UAB product to a reserve-future contract in January and he made the practice squad for the regular season, starting for the Broncos in the preseason finale.

OTA Day 13: The Answers Are Blowin’ in the Wind

OTA Day 12
What turned out to be a slight groin injury has left Brandon Marshall sidelined throughout much of team camp. But Wednesday’s OTA closed with Marshall working out under the close watch of assistant athletic trainer Corey Oshikoya, practicing his lateral movement while tethered to the goal post.

A day earlier, it was fellow wide receiver Glenn Martinez who moved back and forth across the field.

On the practice field, the story of the day was the weather.

Usually, practicing outside to prepare for the elements entails working out on a chilly day or with snowflakes falling. However, such meteorologically challenging workouts don’t usually take place until November or December.

That was not the case on Wednesday, as sustained winds of 32 miles per hour buffeted the Broncos, sending footballs flying all over creation and wide of their targets.

“Sometimes you’d see the ball go to the left goal post and it would go far wide right and almost in the parking lot,” defensive end Kenard Lang said.

Although the stiff breezes wreaked havoc with the field-goal attempts of Brandon Pace and Jason Elam — as well as the passes of Denver’s four quarterbacks — some tosses remained on the money, most spectacularly being a deep, 50-yard pass up the right sideline from Darrell Hackney to David Kircus during one-on-one drills.

Other notes …

… Jeff Shoate intercepted one of Jay Cutler’s passes in one-on-one work …

… Champ Bailey and Domonique Foxworth exchanged jerseys during the practice …

OTA Day 11: Notes and Photos

June 1st, 2007 - 4:02pm by AndrewOther posts by

OTA Day 11
The last two days, Tony Scheffler has been able to catch some of the action on the field, however, as you can see, his recovery from foot surgery is only beginning. The target for Scheffler’s return remains training camp.

Other injuries have dotted the Broncos throughout OTAs, particularly at wide receiver, where an already slim receiving corps that was without Brandon Stokley and Rod Smith lost Glenn Martinez on the first day of OTAs and Brandon Marshall earlier this week with hamstring and groin injuries, respectively.

Head Coach Mike Shanahan said Marshall’s injury is “not very serious.”

More notes from Friday …

… Quincy Morgan had the most acrobatic catch of the day. With tight coverage from Eric Hill blanketing him, Morgan tipped Patrick Ramsey’s pass about 10 feet in the air and reached up to grab it …

… Tip drills were the main course of the day. Dré Bly tipped a pass into John Lynch’s grasp during seven-on-seven drills, while later Domonique Foxworth took an interception “to the house” after a Patrick Ramsey pass skipped off Nate Jackson’s hands and into those of the third-year cornerback …

… And since OTAs are about mixing and matching players from various lines of the depth chart, this is the time for the Darrell Hackney-to-Javon Walker connection; it worked brilliantly for a deep connection midway through practice …

… Former Wisconsin safety Roderick Rogers showed some closing speed in his work with the cornerbacks, knocking away a deep pass for David Kircus during one-on-one work …

… And now, some pictures:

And if you’re going to Fan Fair, I’ll be over on the East Club level between 1 and 3 p.m., willingly matching trivia wits. Stop by and say hello, or heckle … do what you will, just keep it clean.

OTA Day 10: Notes, Photos and Eddie Moore

May 31st, 2007 - 2:40pm by AndrewOther posts by

OTA Day 10
Approximately two months remain between today’s OTA workout — the 10th of 14 this year — and the start of training camp, but the sprint for positions is already underway, as the linebackers have learned.

While the weakside and middle linebacker slots are set in the grasp of Ian Gold and D.J. Williams, respectively, the strongside duties await someone to grasp them, and so far, Eddie Moore has made the first big push, working his way into first-team work throughout team camp.

“When we first met, Coach (Jim Bates said), ‘No one has a position locked in except Ian and D.J. Everything else is free and open.’”

Moore has walked through that open door, using his reunion with Bates — under whom he played for three seasons with the Miami Dolphins — as a catapult into an opportunity.

“It couldn’t have worked out any better,” Moore said. “It’s straight competition across the board. The best man will get the job.

Microfracture surgery kept Moore sidelined last fall, and he spent the season completing his undergraduate studies at the University of Tennessee. But Moore is healthy now — and so too seems to be his career after a year away.

More notes …

… Wide receivers Brandon Marshall, Glenn Martinez, Brandon Stokley and Rod Smith remained out of uniform …

… Tight end Tony Scheffler took in the session. He underwent surgery for a fractured bone in his left foot last week and is now on crutches, with a boot protecting his injured foot …

… Domenik Hixon turned in perhaps the catch of the day with a tightrope grab of a short Jay Cutler pass while falling out of bounds …

… Special teams has been a point of emphasis. The team worked on punts on Tuesday and Wednesday and turned to field goals on Thursday, with Jason Elam making his first on-field appearance of the week to date …

… And without further ado, some photos:
