Bell and Boyd Ready for Chargers

Last time the Broncos and the Chargers met, Cory Boyd and Tatum Bell were watching NFL football from their couches. In this Sunday’s rematch against San Diego, the two are the only healthy tailbacks remaining on the Denver roster.

During his Monday press conference, Head Coach Mike Shanahan announcement that P.J. Pope and Selvin Young will be placed on injured reserve, joining an already long list of rushers lost for the season — Anthony Alridge, Andre Hall, Peyton Hillis, Michael Pittman and Ryan Torain.

“I have never been a part of this or heard of anything like this at all,” Bell said. “Having seven running backs on IR — it is shocking.”

Wednesday Notes: Back to Business

The Broncos got back to the grindstone Wednesday, preparing for their next opponent, and it’s one that will provide some unique challenges.

The Miami Dolphins come to INVESCO Field at Mile High this week, and coming off of two losses before the bye week, the Broncos are getting ready for a battle to get back on the winning track.

There are several interesting storylines leading up to the game, not the least of which involves two prominent figures from the 2009 NFL Draft.

ROOKIES LIVING UP TO BILLING

Sunday’s game features a first-round 2009 NFL Draft pick at left tackle for both teams’ offensive line, and both rookies have started every game for their team this season.

Not Dwelling on History

The New England Patriots have been the most consistent team in the National Football League this decade. The team’s three Super Bowl Championships, four Super Bowl appearances, six division titles and NFL-best record of 103-31 can attest to that.

But if the Patriots are this century’s super team, then the Broncos are their kryptonite.

Since 2001, the year New England started its dominance by winning the team’s first Super Bowl, the Broncos have a 5-1 record against the Patriots. That mark includes the Broncos’ 27-13 win in an AFC Divisional Playoff Game during the 2005 season, making Denver the first team to beat New England in the playoffs since ’01.

Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick said the Broncos are a team that knows how to win.

“They are a good football team — that is number one,” he said. “It starts with Mike and the coaching, their program and their players. They have won a lot of games and championships, and they have beaten a lot of teams. They certainly have had a lot of success against us. I have a tremendous amount of respect for Mike and the Broncos — they are always tough.”

A Fight For 4-1

The Broncos are entering this weekend’s game against Tampa Bay 3-1, fresh off the team’s first loss of the season. The Buccaneers are also 3-1, but Tampa has put together three straight wins following the team’s opening weekend loss against New Orleans. Both teams have taken different routes to get where they are a quarter through the NFL season, but to each team Sunday’s showdown is critical in keeping their productive starts going.

Denver will attempt to rebound and collect some of its early season momentum while Tampa will try and keep its winning steak alive. Regardless of what each team has done up to this point, both know a 4-1 start is better than a 3-2 one.

Jay Cutler said every game comes down to preparation and execution.

“It is a chess match,” Cutler said. “Each and every game is and all season long is about how you can arrange, adjust and tweak things.”

And the Captains Are…

On their final day of practice at Dove Valley before heading to Oakland for the season opener on Monday Night Football, the Broncos selected their team captains for 2008.

Champ Bailey and Jay Cutler will again don the big “C” patch on their jerseys, but they will be joined by three more of their teammates as well. Daniel Graham and D.J. Williams will also be captains for the offense and defense, respectively, and Mike Leach will represent the special teams.

An Interesting New Depth Chart…

The Broncos released a new and updated depth chart Saturday, with some interesting changes on it.

The starting lineup remains the same on offense, with Eddie Royal continuing to hold onto that #2 wideout spot opposite Brandon Marshall. But Glenn Martinez has moved up behind Marshall.

Nate Jackson remains at the #2 spot behind Daniel Graham, with Scheffler at the #3. Jackson has worked with Graham in the team’s two-tight end sets, and he started on Friday against the Packers, scoring a touchdown in the process.

Peyton Hillis holds onto the #2 fullback spot behind Cecil Sapp. He saw significant action Friday night and performed well.

On defense, Marquand Manuel is listed as the starter opposite Marlon McCree. Hamza Abdullah mans the #2 spot behind Manuel, with Roderick Rogers and Josh Barrett behind him, in that order.

Vickiel Vaughn is at #2 behind McCree.

Also, Brett Kern is listed as the starting punter.

Practice Quick Hits: 8/20

It may be Wednesday on the calendar, but in the Broncos’ world, it’s actually Friday, with tomorrow being Saturday and Friday being Sunday.

Confused yet?

Since this is the first week that the team has switched over to their regular season weekly schedule, Friday’s preseason contest against the Green Bay Packers has turned things somewhat upside down. It all makes at least a little sense when you take into account that the Broncos are treating this week like it may as well be in the middle of the season, thus Friday is being treated like a gameday Sunday.

Cowboys at Camp: Day 2, AM

The competitive juices were flowing as Broncos and Cowboys hit the practice field together for the second straight day on Thursday. Hard hits and big plays were abound and a skirmish between the two squads showed that neither team is taking their time out on the field together lightly.

ATTENDANCE REPORT: Boss and Champ Bailey remained out of pads with their respective injuries, Boss nursing a sprained right ankle and Champ as sore right hamstring…Louis Green remained on the sidelines with a concussion/neck injury…Tom Nalen watched practices still resting his left knee…Erik Pears was out of pads with a sore back…Ryan Torain continues to recover from surgery on his left elbow.

POSTURING FOR POSITION: Niko Koutouvides continued to take reps at middle linebacker with first team. Jamie Winborn continued to fill in for Boss Bailey at first unit strong side linebacker. Marquand Manuel continued taking first unit snaps at safety with Hamza Abdullah getting reps with the second team. After getting the afternoon off yesterday, Casey Wiegmann was back as the first unit center.

Cowboys at Camp: Day 1, PM

The Broncos and Cowboys got back to it this afternoon, kicking off the second practice at around 4:30. At an hour and a half long, the afternoon session was a little shorter than the morning one, and after individual team drills, the two teams came together for two 11-on-11 periods with a special teams segment wedged in between.

ATTENDANCE REPORT: In addition to the players out of pads during the morning session, a number of Broncos veterans got their normal afternoon off. Ebenezer Ekuban, Darrell Jackson, Dewayne Robertson, Brandon Stokley and Casey Wiegmann joined their injured teammates on the sidelines.

POSTURING FOR POSITION: The lineups were the same for the most part, but with both Nalen and Wiegmann out, P.J. Alexander and Kory Lichtensteiger rotated at the center position. Kenny Peterson worked with the starting defense in the place of Robertson.

MATCHUPS: As with this morning, each field had a different set of drills, so we combined “Focal Points” and “Key Plays” into one category. Here is the breakdown of how each competition went down.

A.M. Blog: Day 16

It’s less than 24 hours until the Broncos host the Cowboys for a couple days of joint practices, and the team held a two hour practice without pads Tuesday morning, the last day for fans to watch training camp.

As has often been the case, things got started with a laugh as D.J. Williams called up coach and former Bronco Keith Burns to lead the team’s breakdown.

ATTENDANCE REPORT: Hamza Abdullah, Boss and Champ Bailey, Louis Green, Peyton Hillis, Tom Nalen, Erik Pears and Ryan Torain were all listed on the out of pads list with their various injuries. Hillis did participate in practice, however. Champ, Green, Nalen and Pears all watched from the sidelines. Boss remained inside rehabbing his sprained ankle.

- Chad Mustard has been moved from the Physically Unable to Perform list to the active roster.

- New cornerback Wale Dada participated in practice after the team waived Lamont Reid. The previous blog entry gives a little more information on the newest member of the Broncos.
