Giants is the Answer

December 2nd, 2008 - 9:39am by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

The answer to my blog question Monday is the New York Giants, who had Vince Lombardi as their offensive coordinator, before he went to Green Bay, and Tom Landry as their defensive coordinator prior to going to the expansion Dallas Cowboys.

The blogger who said the Giants’ Lombardi, Landry and Jim Lee Howell was right on, but before Howell, Hall of Famer Steve Owen was the Giants’ head coach, so that franchise had three future Hall of Famers on staff.

And the only thing that promopted the question on my part in the first place was that at New York against the Jets Mike Shanahan earned his 153rd career win as a head coach, which ties Shanahan with Owen for 16th place all-time.

With one more win Mike Shanahan will pass Owen and move into a 15th place tie with another Hall of Fame head coach, Marv Levy.

Anytime one’s name is being included in the same list with members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, that’s a good thing.

A “Great Coaches” Quiz

December 1st, 2008 - 3:12pm by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

I thought I might post a short blog that is in the form of a quiz question, with the answer to post in a day or so.

There is a former National Football League head coach who had as his offensive coordinator and as his defensive coordinator two men who both went on to be head coaches themselves.

So far, that could apply to a number of teams and coaching staffs.

But in this very rare case, all three coaches were inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

What was the team that had all three on staff, and who were the three coaches?

There is a reason behind the question, which will be given as part of the answer.
