Broncos En Español Draws Capacity Crowd

On Wednesday, the Broncos reached out to their Hispanic fan base with Broncos En Español, a free event that featured autographs and photos with players and alumni, along with inflatable obstacle courses and targets for the kids and karaoke.

The players in attendance were fullback Chris Gronkowski, safety Quinton Carter and guard Manny Ramirez. Also signing autographs Wednesday evening were Broncos alumni including Billy Thompson and Vance Johnson.

For Ramirez, whose parents are Mexican, it was a great opportunity to connect with people from a similar background.

“My parents are originally from Mexico so any time I get an opportunity to come out here in Colorado to support my culture, I’m always happy to do it,” Ramirez said. “Always good times.”

Gronkowski Ready to Show Versatility

Chris Gronkowski is gearing up to play a traditional fullback role in the Broncos offense. While his primary job will be blocking, he’s ready for a chance to showcase some of his other skills.

Gronkowski took his first handoff of training camp during Thursday afternoon’s practice, running for positive yards and giving defenders a challenge in stopping his momentum.

“I got a handoff today, so that was cool,” he smiled. “Hopefully I get a couple more of those. And hopefully I can continue to use my versatility and catch some passes and run the ball, and also block. Hopefully I can show them that I can do those things as well.”

His eagerness to catch passes out of the backfield was evident when asked if he had hands like his brother, tight end Rob Gronkowski of the New England Patriots.

“Have you been watching practice?” he laughed. “I’ve got good hands. Rob’s one of the best, so I don’t know if I could say I have the same as him. But they’re up there.”

Notebook: Gronkowski Glad to be in Denver

June 1st, 2012 - 4:02pm by Tyler EverettOther posts by

Chris Gronkowski thought his first snaps as Peyton Manning’s fullback were imminent when he signed with the Colts in 2011. But due to Manning’s well-documented health issues during his final season in Indianapolis, Chris’ first snaps in the same backfield as No. 18 came last week, after the Broncos dealt cornerback Cassius Vaughn to Indy in exchange for the middle Gronkowski brother.

“When I went into Indy last year, I was kind of shocked by it,” Gronkowski said. “I haven’t gotten to play with Peyton yet because once I got to Indy, he was already out. I know he always wanted a fullback, that’s what they told me when I got to Indy. I hope I do what he expects.”

“This is my first time on the field with him and so far it’s been great. He’s making sure everyone’s doing the right thing.”

Naturally, one of the first people Chris heard from after hearing he was Denver-bound was his older brother Dan, who spent the 2010 season in Denver.

“I was at practice [when I heard I had been traded to Denver],” Chris said. “It was right after practice and [Colts General Manager Ryan] Grigson came up to me and told me he had good news for me.”

“My brother Dan had a lot to say,” he continued. “He was the first one to call me. I made sure I talked to him right away. He told me loved it here and that it was a great place, that he was sad that he was gone.”

As for making a name for himself as one of three brothers playing in the NFL, Chris said he’d rather focus on enjoying the ride and earning a reputation of his own.

“I’m right in between Rob and Dan,” Gronkowski said. “Dan’s real conservative and quiet. He stays to himself and doesn’t really go out to the media and go crazy like my younger brother Rob. I like to have fun too, but I just don’t go to the level that Rob goes to. It’s cool. It’s more about my brother Rob, but it feels good to get my name thrown in there too every once in a while. We’re just having fun with it. Having three brothers in the league has been real fun for the whole family, and we’re just trying to keep it going.”

Young Players Learning on the Field

A pair of undrafted wide receivers are drawing some attention from Offensive Coordinator Mike McCoy during offseason practices.

Gerell Robinson is one of three rookies on the Denver Broncos from Arizona State University.

Robinson impressed McCoy and staff when they checked out quarterback Brock Osweiler during a pre-draft workout. McCoy said the young guys will continue to get lots of reps in offseason drills, and with a new playbook and a quarterback in Peyton Manning who keeps a rapid pace, Robinson will have an opportunity to earn his keep this summer.

“We’re throwing a ton at them, and we’ve told them from Day One we’re not waiting for them,” McCoy said. “So they’ve got to get in their books and study extremely hard every day and they can’t miss an opportunity. They’ve got to take all the mental reps in the world because we’re going at the quarterback’s speed. And the quarterback has played a long time so everyone has to keep up with him.”

Broncos Trade for Chris Gronkowski

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. – The Broncos have acquired fullback Chris Gronkowski in a trade with the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for cornerback Cassius Vaughn, the team announced on Wednesday.

“We have a lot of depth in our secondary and this was an opportunity for us to add a quality fullback to our roster,” Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway announced via Twitter.

Gronkowski has played 21 games during his career with Dallas (2010) and Indianapolis (2011). He’s gained 17 yards on five carries and 35 yards on seven receptions, including a receiving touchdown.

Chris is one of three Gronkowski brothers currently on NFL rosters along with Rob (New England) and Dan (Cleveland), who spent the 2010 season with the Broncos. He played college football at Maryland (2005-06), overlapping with Dan, before transferring to Arizona, where he played with Rob (2007-09).
