A QB Back in the Day: Charley Johnson

April 5th, 2012 - 3:52pm by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

Much of success in professional football is and always has been about the quarterback position.

The most recent and an all-time most notable example is that of Peyton Manning, already stamping the Denver Broncos organization merely through osmosis, with greater influences to come steadily, and constantly, an ever flowing example of the water rising to elevate all boats.

Manning is the only man to have been named the National Football League Most Valuable Player four times. He has passed for 54,828 yards and 399 touchdowns, third most in NFL history in both departments.

No quarterback has earned more Pro Bowl selections than Manning (11), produced more 4,000-yard seasons (11), posted more 300-yard games (63) or had more seasons with 25 or more passing touchdowns (13).

This is a staggering array of statistics that he brings to the Broncos, but always, there is a connection to the past at the quarterback position.

In the category of winning, Peyton Manning’s 141 victories as a starter rank fourth all time, with a winning percentage (.678) that is the very best among any of the five quarterbacks who have won 125 games.

Clearly, he is a winner almost without parallel.

But once upon a time, Broncos Ring of Fame wide receiver Haven Moses, speaking of another Denver QB, said, “He taught us how to win.”

Moses was speaking of Charley Johnson, and this is just a little jaunt down memory lane to remind us all that the foundations for current successes were built in the past.

Sometimes there is so much going on, it is very difficult to tie a bow around it. This is about Charley Johnson, but sometimes a topic is about a lot of things, all at once.

While the terrible tragedy of Kenny McKinley’s passing casts a pall over Broncos Country, we are in a seven-day period that takes us full cycle and ties things together.

Last week the team played its home opener and won, with the end zones painted like those of the 1960’s—a great tribute that will remain all year.

When Overtime Became Reality

One of the things that happens when you have seen a lot of games is that one thought connects to a memory, and another, and another.

Today we had a weekly staff meeting, and I was sitting a couple of chairs away from Billy Thompson, who now handles all the alumni affairs for the team but who in his previous life was a three-time Pro Bowl performer who set the all-time Broncos record for turnovers with 61 (40 interceptions, 21 fumble recoveries).

In fact, he returned four of those fumbles for scores and was around the ball seemingly as much as any Bronco defender in history.

Anyway, as we play the Steelers this week, my mind drifted a bit to one of the greatest games in team history.

Now Starring … Charley Johnson

I’m old enough to recall when Miller Lite commercials were something to savor because of their liberal use of former athletes, coaches and other random celebrities … Bob Uecker, Bubba Smith, Billy Martin, Dick Butkus, Rodney Dangerfield, Bert Jones, and, of course, Mickey Spillane.

But I reckon I was too young to remember when Ring of Famer Charley Johnson — with his first name spelled differently — found himself the star of one of these spots in 1979:
